ℹ️ About the Episode
We've been keeping a secret from Caleb for six months now. It wasn't easy-especially because Caleb asks SO MANY questions. In January, KYD Insiders Mark & Ceci reached out to us, giving us first dibs on Mark's dad's MGB. They knew Caleb's affinity toward MGs from previous episodes.
We thought it over and decided this was one of those opportunities that he'd remember forever. Caleb contributes so much to KYD and is always so incredibly helpful with a positive attitude. We thought this was something he could take away from his "KYD Years" before he goes off to school next year. If you're now wondering what we're going to do once we're officially empty nesters ... don't worry, we have plans! We knew we needed a good story (reason) to tow a car hauler from Michigan to Ohio and show up at the British Transportation Museum. So we told Caleb that KYD Insider David needed us to pick up his Mustang Shelby because he was traveling. In return, Caleb would get to drive the Shelby at the GingerMan Raceway.

Brought back lots of memories. To this day, one of my favorite days of my whole life was surprising my daughter with her car on a random day when she was 16 years old (in 2004), She just walked out one morning to get in the car for me to take her to school and it was sitting in the driveway. Soooo much fun! I’ll Never forget it. This looked like so much fun for you!

This is really cool and we love that Caleb loves this car. A few years ago, Natalie’s dad (in the Uk) bought an MGB to relive his youth (owned one in his early 20s, now mid 70s). It was the one that got away! Over the years, he restored it to exactly how he remembered his original one. New chassis, repainted, new engine, reupholstered interior, new roof. He barely watches our videos, but we’re pretty sure he’ll watch this 🤣

When my brother was 16, he bought his first car, a 1957 MBA coupe. He restored it (I like to say I helped) and later sold it when he graduated from college. He later restored the car our father bought new, with which we both learned how to drive, a 1957 VW beetle. He now has another 1957 MGA coupe, a 1972 MGB convertible, several old motorcycles, all which he is currently restoring, along with the VW. He has won many awards with his restoration work and he is now 71. The point is, Caleb now joins this British car family of folks whose love for these cars remains lifelong. Loved the video, the joy will stay with him forever!

My 1st car was a 67 Fiat 850 Spyder Sport, got it in 78. It would break down every 150 - 175 miles. In college, I would park it in one specific spot so I could push start it myself for 6 months until I could get the starter fixed. I loved that car. Owned it until 2021. Caleb, enjoy the education of a car you can actually work on and learn all of its peculiar secrets. points burning out, carburetor fowling, electrical problems (catching fire), over heating for no reason and stranding you 100 miles from anywhere, and so forth... Spent every Christmas with my dad, for many years, rebuilding the engine, electrical, clutch until I got my own house then the tradition passed over to my kids. Enjoy it and treasure the memories.

Your parental ruse in unveiling the car to Caleb was awesome! Capturing it on video and sharing it was a very appreciated. I would be happy to nominate you both as candidates for the parental Hall of Fame! Very entertaining! As a car nut since birth, I can appreciate Caleb's excitement and enthusiasm. In no time flat, Caleb will be an expert in troubleshooting his MGB. His first tool should probably be a Multimeter and books on MGB repair. My first car was a problematic beast to say the least, but, the value of education received working through automotive problems in a simple car served me well for years to come. He is going to have a blast and will learn a lot. Thanks for sharing the big day!

Caleb, you have the best parents EVER! Loved this episode. My two brothers and I all had MG's. My oldest brother was transferred to Fort Hood, TX upon his return from Vietnam, and bought a used MG. Ended up with a dead transmission and bought one from a wrecking yard - a year different - and did the replacement work himself. Never figured out where the extra bolt was supposed to go. Returned home upon discharge and dropped the universal joint on the way home, in an obscure town in California. My next-older brother bought a new Midget in college - I think it was a 74. Funny story, my mom worked with him on the purchase, then later that Saturday she went to confession. My brother had done something to torque her off, and she talked with the priest about it. The priest says, "Why don't you do something nice for your son for a penance?" She says, "I just loaned him the down payment for his first car." The priest says, "That's probably enough!" He kept it through college and then sold it and bought a first-generation Toyota Celica. The guy who bought it from him eventually sold it, and then that guy eventually put it in storage. My brother tracked it down and bought it back, has restored it, and it's a garage queen now. I bought my Midget in 79, the last year they were made. Drove it for about 44k miles. The right rear seal never did seal properly, always leaked a bit. Eventually, the electronic ignition started going out intermittently - the car would just die, I'd pull over, give it a minute or so and then start it back up. Eventually it died and I ended up locking up the starter trying to get it going. Had to get the ignition and the starter replaced. Later, one of the gears broke and I had to have the tranny rebuilt. I ended up selling it to a lady who was moving to the east coast (I'm in Oregon) who had retinitis pigmentosa - she was slowly going both blind and deaf, and wanted to have a fun car while she could still drive. Here's a hint: if you get in traffic and it starts to overheat, roll the windows down and put the heat on full blast. I always wanted to get a bumper sticker that would say, "The quality parts falling off this car were made in Great Britain." All the best to you!!!

This brought back so many memories of Michigan. It was 60 years ago this summer US 131 Dragway opened. I was 7 and helped prepare for the opening with my Dad, Frank. In 1974 I owned a Orange '71 MGB (the one with no glovebox) wire wheels (never wish for those again) two 6Volt batteries (impossible to jump) I installed a roll bar (made it much stiffer over potholes) & doors didn't rattle. Recommended! Never had problems finding someone for a push either. And Euchre! Living in Oregon now. Enjoy your MG Caleb and drive safely.

What a thrill this was to watch. I bought my first MGB in 1966 and my second in 1972. But it was my third one that really had a story. I decided that I wanted to buy one to keep really as a ‘toy’ and for several years I looked. I was so lucky to find what I did. The owner of my 1981 MGB Mark IV had bought it for the same reason but after a year he decided that he really could not afford the cost. The car was built on my birthday in October 1980 and was one of the last two ever imported into CANADA. It’s shipping mate was identical and was purchased by The Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa. Because it did not arrive into CANADA until February of 1981 it’s VIN number was registered as a 1981. There are only two with that distinction because British Leyland stopped making MGBs in October of 1980. I had that car for 24 years and it was never driven in the rain and was garaged every winter. After retiring from EDUCATION I drove it rarely and so also decided to find someone who was looking for a showroom quality MGB to love. I found that person and sold it for almost twice what I had paid for it. I was often asked to tell why my vanity plate read MGB3. Enjoy it Caleb. It is a treasure. If I could I would attach a photo but cannot do that here. The real killer was that it was also British Racing Green. Because I owned it and it was not transferable, I still have the vanity plate as my souvenir.

Can’t. Stop. Smiling!!! Congratulations, Caleb!! Truly so excited for you! And I know that family is so happy to know their Dad’s car will be treasured and cared for as their Dad did for all those years. Such a wonderful coming together of so many kind people!

I had a 1969 MGB. Dad and I rebuilt the car body with the help of a neighbor. I drove that car for over 12 years. We went everywhere together. High School, College, Army Basic Training, Army Flight School and beyond. I wish I still had it. I do have my Dad’s ‘52 MGTD now though. If the car is warm, you don’t really have to be going very fast to push start it. Trust me. 😜 If you’re ever in the Allentown, PA area look me up. I can show you much of what you need to keep her tuned up and running smooth. Stuart

Caleb, you have great taste in cars. MGB-GT was my first car. I drove it cross country and had to learn the basics of auto repair. Now I have 2- a roadster and a GT. You never get over it. BTW of course you are taking it to college. I wonder if the MGB is still a chick magnet...

When I was in high school, my very cool mom bought herself an MGB and was the talk of our little, midwestern town. So happy for Caleb!!!

I was raised in the Northeast and had a similar car (Triumph). I drove it all year long, rain, snow, loved it. Unless Caleb decides to leave it at home, when he goes to college he needs to take it. If it’s his car, it should be his choice! Yes, it needs to be taken care of, but there is no reason that can’t be done. Congratulations Caleb, it’s a beautiful car, be careful, take care of it, and have fun.

My first car was a British Leyland '74 Triumph Spitfire. First day I got it, it stalled going across 2 lanes of traffic. My Dad had to rewire the whole car. I kept a hammer in it always to tap the starter whenever it decided to act up. You had to lift the shift to move to reverse, until the entire thing pulled out and then you just made sure you could pull forward wherever you parked. God I loved that car! Enjoy Caleb!!!!

The paint job on that car is outstanding but I’m still TR - 9 person with wooden dash. This young man deserve this.

Gee Caleb is one lucky fella to have parents that are so loving. I guess the next thing he needs is a do it yourself manuel for all the parts and what they do. Caleb so excited for you. Sending a Big Hug. Thanks and Love y'all

I own and race multiple Austin Healey Sprites, the MGB little brother... I have left my wife on the side of the road soo many times, but we still enjoy the feeling the wind in the face... And that feeling of being towed back in is the 'walk of shame'...

I started watching and couldn’t stop grinning the entire video. Such a great surprise for Caleb. One year owning an old car turns you into a Master Mechanic. 😂

Great episode! I just drove from Virginia to Florida over the 4th of July weekend to pick up my wife’s dad’s MG he bought brand new in 1980 so my daughter could use it to drive away in for her wedding. Such fun little cars.

I’m sure Caleb will enjoy the MGB. He’ll learn a lot working on it every time something breaks or needs adjustment. Years ago my neighbor had one and it seemed he was working on it practically every weekend!

Back in the late 90s I drove an 1971 MGB for years. Chrome bumpers, three windshield wipers, and spoked wheels. Amazing car. Get used to adjusting those dual SU carburetors under the hood. I found a glass glow plug that allowed me to see the color of the flame in the combustion chamber helped a lot with this process. :) Congrats Caleb! Very fun car!
