its a bit sad if you think about it in todays media and social media. If a public person would name such comments to an other it would spread like wildfire on the internet and newspapers would write about it and the judge himself would get shit ton of bad PR. Shows how much people are afraid to say what they really mean today and that what you say in todays society has a lot more meaning compared to what it used to.

I give the Aussie judge a slight pass, partly because it's the Aussie way, but he also sums up quite well Kurt's appeal - not conventionally attractive but very appealing and real. Simon was just a dick and you can see how that comment stung.

Why are you fishing for likes? I am Norwegian and I love Kurt. His voice is amazing. And its astonishing how he isn't more famous outside of Norway. Or is it? By the normal standards in the Western World he is what is considered subpar or as Simon said it "Ugly". Which is a mean thing to say, but who cares, its true.. But it shouldn't matter. And it didn't as he won.

Well people who go to these contests have some expectation for their music career, and it is the judges's responsibility to tell them how good they are but also the obstacles that they may face. That being said, it is a sad truth the while we still have music from great bands from the past lingering, today's pop idols are more than just their voices, they need to appeal to the eyes also.

Kurt is a handsome guy! As you see, only the male judges criticized his looks. It is because they lack talent in every way you can think. Kurt has more talent in his little finger than they ever will have in a century.

I don't think he's ugly...I'm a straight guy with a girlfriend...but if I were gay he'd get a thumbs up....but that's all negating his angelic voice!!!! My favorite singer already!!!

When I read that Kurt cried in the toilets after hearing the judge's comments, I wanted to give him a hug. Yes, Simon was wrong to call Kurt ugly, but don't forget the Australian judge - he started it all by calling him a hobbit; well, he should look in a mirror because he's not exactly supermodel material himself. Kurt, if you're reading this, pay no attention to those idiots. You are not ugly - you are unique, and that's what makes you beautiful (sorry 1D!). Go get 'em, dude!

Simon is just keeping it real. How you look is (or to a lesser degree now than before) a huge part of commercial music. The fact that Simon thought he would win regardless says everything about Kurts voice.

I don't find him ugly, I really don't. If other people do find him ugly, let me remind you with this metaphor: "It's not about what's on the Outside, It's what's on the Inside that counts."

You could see the hurt on his face when Simon called him ugly. It just goes to show how superficial this industry really is. There are people with amazing voices who struggle to make themselves known because of their physical appearance. Kurt is not ugly looking but average and when he is up on stage his confidence and singing ability takes him to a whole new level.

Kurt has the best voice in the world...I've heard almost every great artis live...no one can be compard to Kurt, he is a STAR! He has his own style...it's way better than the ordinary voices of the artist today! I love the woman judge, she's got it! :)

"Don't take this the wrong way, but you are ugly!" I don't think taking a comment like that "the right way," makes the comment any better. But it must be convenient for someone like Cowell to be able to lash out at someone, and if those who are being lashed out at gets offended by it, they are the ones left with the problem, since they simply have not "taken it the right way".

I'm really proud of Kurt. I'm from Norway and I love it! Kurt's the man!!

It is shocking to me that anyone could call Kurt Ugly. He is NOT Ugly. He might not be a super Model but how many men are? My goodness the vanity of some folks. Hands down this mans voice beats most other male vocalists, maybe all. I think he not only has an amazing voice but is cute as well.

I am so extremely proud of him!!! My "little hobbit". Seriously? Who can sit on international tv an call someone that??? That is so mean! But he won. Just like he deserved. Underdog isn't particularly a negative word.

I've been listening to Kurt on youtube and am blown away. He has a strong voice, but where he really stands out is his technical ability that allows him to sing confidently in any genre with a unique and identifiable sound. Norway should be proud. They have one of the best vocalists on the planet.

For me, Kurt is the best artist in the world. He's sweet, honest and has the most incredible voice I've ever heard, and those qualities should be the most important ones for an artist. I'm proud to be norwegian.

He is not ugly!!! He is brilliant and charming and has an amazing voice. The only flaw is the teeth, but that's just kinda cute once you've seen him before. It's terrible how so much is supposed to depend on people's looks. This is what relates to "the average people". We like him because he seems so normal and down to earth. He was just a regular plumber who was signed up for this by his friends and then he went and won the entire thing. He really is an idol.

I remember watching this when it was airing and thinking HE HAS TO WIN!

Kurt Nilsen is better looking than Simon Cowell, so it is very strange hearing him saying this, and getting away with it. He is just so unproffesional and when he can´t criticize a person for his voice he has to attack his looks. It is disgusting. Another thing, he says that Kurt would not have gotten a recording contract because of his looks?? I could make a long list of ugly musicians in thirty seconds. I´m not going to, though. I got class - Simon Cowell don´t.

Andreas, with a voice like that I have to ask, why was he the underdog? Yes, Kelly and Will had beautiful voices, but Kurt had a voice that cannot be compared to anyone, even them. He deserved the World title, and as far as I'm concerned he is so cute and his voice is unmeasured by anyone else in the world! Kurt is MY IDOL!

I'm a guy (and straight) and I don't think he's ugly at all. You should never judge the book by its cover, and telling someone (or hinting like Simon Cowell did) that someone is ugly directly to their face is really fucking evil. There you have the difference between Norwegians and many others. Kurt has probably cursed himself that he should not do anything with his teeth just to show that he is good enough as he is, and we love him for that.

He does have an astonishing voice and he did win--Simon had that much right. How anyone could talk about looks after hearing the sound that came out of that man is beyond me. I was blown away at the time and still am. Besides, he's not ugly at all. I'll take a real looking man who can sing over the Timberlakes of this world any day. I feel the same way when I listen to kd lang or Clay Aiken.

This is fun to watch now. Just look how far Kurt have come in 10 years, and how big he is in Norway. And how on earth could they tell him he was ugly? It wasn't a beauty-contest, it was a singing contest and Kurt was by far the most talented of them all. But who cares now, he won!

Not only is Kurt a very charming person, I think I would have fallen in love with this guy if I wasn't married :) He is NOT ugly AT ALL. He is a very genuine and sincere person. The comments about his looks where a little harsh but they do have a point. If you want to make it as a pop idol you need the looks. I don't find Kurt ugly but he is not "hot". Lucky for him, compared to the other contestants, his voice was way out of their league. I know that some people will start mentioning artists that made it and who are really ugly but those are nearly all rock artists and not pop artists.

I remember watching this 20 years ago, but seeing this clip now it's still so weird to think about what was considered OK to say on TV back in the day. And no, calling someone ugly like that wasn't the norm, but this exact same conversation would've never happened today or it would've at the very least had serious consequences. Kurt is doing just fine today, and he usually sings lovely sold out Christmas concerts. *He really deserved that win!*

I watched that show too and I understood it as it was after the results show that happened and that it was just the whole effect of realising he had won and what that could mean to his life. When anyone's emotions would be on a roller coaster ride. Not because of what the judges said to him. His manager had advised him before hand to just not reply if others started talking about his looks and just to concentrate on the fact that he has an amazing voice.

He's doing a good job. A true Idol! :)

@tigeramigos yes, to the extent that he is one of the major selling and respected artists here in Norway. Which for some may not be enough, for him it is! Has completed sold-out tours each and every year since 2003, recorded and released 4 solo albums(1 with a duet with Willie Nelson), 2 live albums with 3 others and produced/co-produced material for at least 3 other bands to my knowledge. Written 95% of his own material. Just started an acoustic tour here, which has received very good critic.

To be bluntly honest, music isn't about sound anymore. It's about multi-media. It's the hard cold fact that comes in the day and age we live in. Despite this the world can appreciate a fine voice. Kelly Clarkson, Susan Boyle, Paul Potts, and Kurt Nilsen are testament to this. All four of these artists aren't the most beautiful of singers, but damn they can sing. As a human race, we should all be proud they are all appreciated.

i watched an interview with Kurt the other day and they brought up the "Hobbit" comments and he said that it doesnt matter how people view him, its the music that counts.....he is sooo true! music today is alot of yelling and cursing and sex but with his music it is just as the older generation thinks of it...if there are no words there is no music....he has brought that back to me and i have yet to find anyone comparable...

I listen to Kurt Nielson, but as he doesn't sing in this video, I only come to watch the the gorgeous judge with the hot accent.
