I remember watching this 20 years ago, but seeing this clip now it's still so weird to think about what was considered OK to say on TV back in the day. And no, calling someone ugly like that wasn't the norm, but this exact same conversation would've never happened today or it would've at the very least had serious consequences. Kurt is doing just fine today, and he usually sings lovely sold out Christmas concerts. *He really deserved that win!*

When i watch this way back when it aired i didn't think that much of it.. Yes it wa mean but he isn't no model.. And that fine. He is beautiful in his own way. Looking at it now.. Dang they were mean. Like come on. I heard later that Kurt went in the bathroom and cried after hearing that. Makes me sad that its all about looks and sh*t that doesn't really matter. Its a singing competition. Judge the mans singing. He has one of the most unique and best voices i ever heard..

I don't understand how a singer like him, with such an ordinary voice, has won World Idol and precisely a great voice like Kelly Clarkson's? Those judges must have been hard of hearing at the time not to know what they were hearing from him. I don't know, in my opinion he is a singer with a simple and ordinary voice of Country music. IMHO!

Fair enough, my opinion differ though. I think he sang exceptionally well, maybe not at this first audition. But later, after he probably had been coached a lot on professional singing and techniques etc. He sure was my favourite of the bunch. But, I am most probably heavily biased, since I am from Norway just like Kurt. <3
