Also, cool fact about the landlady - she's a LEGEND of Chinese cinema, Yuen Qiu. She trained alongside Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, and is an expert in martial arts and Beijing opera. Hell, she didn't even audition for this - the director saw her when she accompanied another actress to auditions, and basically begged her to be in the movie.

She was also in one of the older Bond films. Man With The Golden Gun, iirc. She wasn't a Bond Girl per se, I think she was one of the schoolgirl characters Bond asks info on the area. At least, her character was dressed liked a schoolgirl.

In the Chinese tradition "magic" comes from just being really really good at something. Magic is not separate from the mundane world but rather an extreme example of it. So if you master something, like bowling or a musical instrument, you can use that mastery to cast spells.

This movie tells the three levels of Chinese Kungfu 1. External exercise of muscle and bones (3 guys) 2. Internal exercise of Qi (couple) 3. Master of external and internal (bold guy) I found many people confuses about the musical instrument guys. When you hit the level, you can store the Qi in your body. And you release the Qi in different form to attack others, for the instrument guys is like the voice blade. The leg guy is not even good enough to sense the voice blade. The ring guy can sense it but cannot handle it. The noodle guy can sense it and can against it, but cannot beat it.

To be clear for readers... this is Chinese fantasy derived from mythology. Chinese martial artists obviously don't have nor believe they have magical powers. Also, since some people really don't get it: martial arts are the arts of war. They are combat arts. They are the skills by which one fights in combat. This sounds obvious, but people have very woo-ey nonsensical ideas of what martial arts are sometimes, which are exacerbated by a variety of factors. There also clearly isn't a distinction between 2 and 3 in this film. The beast is just stronger than the couple. In Chinese fantasy, it is incredibly common for various non-weapon tools to be used as weapons. These are often objects of some kind of cultural or spiritual significance in Chinese culture. The instrument guys are using a form of zither. The idea would be something like they are attaching their qi to the sound produced by the zither to act as attacks.

I see the dubbed version of this first and really got the longest time didn't watch it subbed. Both are great. Though I do prefer the subbed version. The knife scene sends me every time. The way Chow uses both sound and its absence is so great. Sometimes you don't even realize when there's no music. The fight with the mercenaries and the three kung-fu masters is a great example of this. The only music in that section, until the fight between those 5 is done is from the music of the killers.

The frog moves are actually reference from an famous swordfighting literature by Louis cha called the toad palm. Thr nickname of the landlord and his wife is also the character of the couple from Louis cha novel, condor heroes. The Buddha palm is from another classic 70s movie Buddha palm. Stephen chow is paying tributes to several work in this movie. Even the poster of the main character holding a axe in one hand and a lollipop in another symbolise reality (the axe) and his childhood dream (lollipop). The whole pigsty setting is from a famous hk 70s movie. Glad to see you guys enjoying the movie

That instrument is called Guzhen. Its fight style is based on the fact where sound can be lethal and honed like a blade. A lot of Chinese fighting styles follow nature, thus there is a lot of variety and fun when shown in a Stephen Chow’s movie. (Edit) Also a lot of people didn’t get the beginning dancing. It shows how much the Axe gang has grown. It started with a few founders (dancing) - news articles - they grew more members (dancing) - more news articles about their notoriety - they are an army strong now (dancing), thus the Axe gang was born.

the whole movie is filled with reference of Chinese martial arts fantasy novels and movies. It is a love letter to the genre. From the black and white era to Sammo Hung to Tsui Hark. If you are grown up with those novels and movies you would see those reference, and Stephen Chow masterfully combine those nostalgias with his imagination and comedy and turn it into an action comedy gold. I can say it is one of his best creation, also the top of the HK martial arts movies genre.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Tern Rings showcased not only one of the Kung Fu Hustle posters in Shaun’s room but cast Yeun Wah, the Landlord, as the Old Man in Tao Lo. Marvel also changed the comic book finger rings to the armband to match the traditional Chinese fighting bracelets as shown in Kung Fu Hustle used by the Tailor, Chiu Chi-ling. Also, Kung Fu Hustle pays tribute to so many films icons, including Hollywood’s Batman sky signal, Spider-Man’s great power line and The Untouchable’s Sean Connery dying words, the Looney Toones, and The Shining, and others.

If you enjoyed this movie then you should check out "Fight Back to School" by Stephen Chow. I think you'll both really like it. Fun Fact: the landlady's husband played by Yuen Wah is also part of the same school Jackie Chan Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao also trained in. And played a handful of villains in other movies. Both Eastern Condors and Dragons Forever he shows how tough he can be.

Kung Fu Hustle is what a Dragon Ball live action could have been. The martial artists here are essentially ki/chi users. Ki or chi users are superhumans in Dragon Ball. Stephen Chow should have directed Dragon Ball Evolution.

Thank you for your PURE review of this MASTERPIECE of a movie, although your editing was quite KROOL! I say PURE because your faces matched the scenes so well that I know so well by heart, and KROOL because I only got to see about 20% of the actual movie due to the extremely heavy editing. For future reference please leave in some shots of the hot guys for us ladies, like the axe gang boss, bad teeth and all, and the funniest scenes like the roadrunner chase between the landlady and our hero, I appreciate both of you guys' opinions, the one in the front because he is so tenderhearted (it's okay to bring the Kleenex!) and the guy in the back for understanding that if certain music can break your heart, then maybe certain music can slice you in half! Thanks for the reference to the Stephen Chow movie Journey something that I have never seen, I only know King Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, If you haven't reviewed Shaolin Soccer, you should, it's equally as amazing as Kung Fu Hustle! Oh and maybe can you say say God darn it or God danggiit or Gosh or Golly Gee or Holy Cow instead of what you do say? Despite my gentle criticisms and my srious objection to the foul language I would still rate you guys BEST at reviewing Kung Fu Hustle of all the reviews I have seen, and I think I have seen them all to date.

Dudes ^^ I wish you would've let a scene or two play out, particularly the landlady chase scene. (oh right, and many people miss it, but there were frogs scattered around The Beast's cell.) But I'm glad you guys enjoyed this movie! Love the story & messages, love how it stars so many actual martial arts experts, love the humor & action & music; and it shows how so many gifted fighters can come from anywhere, be they a useless bum, an effeminate tailor, a blind musician, a laborer, etc. ^_^ and that good prevails~

This movie is hilarious, and Stephen Chow is absolutely amazing, the way he is able to essentially make an eastern live action Looney Toons is genius! Another couple of martial arts or at least martial arts inspired comedies to check out, of course Stephen Chow's Shaolin Soccer, Balls of Fury which is a parody of Bruce Lee's iconic Enter the Dragon, also have to check out the cheesy goodness that is Kung Pow: Enter the Fist which is insane; highly recommend checking out the making of that movie it's pretty wild because the movie itself is so unique it's difficult to describe. Of course, no martial arts comedy list is complete without Jackie Chan's Drunken Master movies and Project A. Just to balance things out have to recommend a few martial arts epics like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero and House of Flying Daggers.

Also thank you for calling out the very clear and evident little detail amidst all of the laughs: Every dude sent flying at mach speed through the air? Oh yeah, DEAD. Hahh!
