This, and Kung Fu Hustle are such underrated comedies, it's criminal. I had so much fun watching those movies.

Those movies are not underrated. That word is so overrated. I can’t think of one person who’s into martial movies that haven’t seen kung fu hustle the critics and box office is good in us and china.

The word 'underrated' is so overused 😂 'Underrated' would imply that these movies are not quite well-known despite their quality, but they are pretty well-known and well received. The example of underrated kungfu/comedy would be 'Kung-Pow'.

Fun Fact: Danny Kwok-Kwan Chan who played the Bruce Lee-like goal keeper would eventually end up playing Bruce Lee in multiple projects. The first was the TV series "The Legend of Bruce Lee" (Li Xiao Long chuan qi (2008), then again in "Ip Man 3" (2015) and "Ip Man 4: The Finale" (2019). Also, I've loved this movie since I was a kid, it's hands down one of the most hysterical films I've ever experienced. No matter how many times I watch it I just crack up and I am glad you guys enjoyed this one!

This movie is legendary. One of the greatest action comedies of all time. I died watching with you guys, thank you lmao

I randomly came across this movie by chance a few years after it’s release. The title seemed pretty self-explanatory. I love Shaolin Kung Fu. I love soccer, so I bought it on DVD on a whim. I was beyond surprised at how well both the action and comedy were executed. Also, nobody seems to mention just how good the special effects were. I was really impressed to later learn that Stephen Chow was the director, writer,, main character & did his own English dub as well. Chow’s name grew with the success of Kung Fu Hustle but Shaolin Soccer, in the West, seemed to be the gem that first put us on notice of what he could do.

Stephen Chow should make a live action anime. Journey to the West was pretty darn close and I really enjoyed it.

I can’t think of a better person suited to do that. Usually they try to make it too realistic and it ends up being pretty awful, they need to take lessons from Chow.

Journey to the West has nothing to do with anime. Journey to the West is a classic Chinese novel published in the Ming Dynasty. Journey to the West was published in 1590, 433 years ago

my favorite part was when steel leg and iron head were singing and Stephen Chow kept breaking character and kept it in the film... they looked like they really had fun. Glad you boys enjoyed it! its my favorite comedy of all time.

stephen chow movies has so much replayability in them. these are the movies that i could watch for the nth time and still enjoy it. simplest jokes but with perfect execution.

And now I can't unsee the idea of shuri testing her synthetic herb as a crossover with this universe. Fun fact the response to this movie led to the line in Kung Fu Hustle of "No more soccer!"

This movie is so outrageous it's so fun to watch. Entertainment at it's finest. Still so confused even after the end credit rolls 🤣🤣🤣

Hey, on the bright side. Instead of a fantastically amazing Steven Cho masterpiece of a Dragonball movie... we got Dragonball Evolution.

"Why do you look like ET?" gave me one of the hardest laughs of any movie when I first watched it. Still cracks me up, this film is a classic! Regarding the shaven head, Shaolin Monks traditionally shave their heads, although I've seen the reasons debated.

When he says phone home ET he actually says "earth is very dangerous, go back to Mars" which is also very funny cus he sounds genuinely concerned.

An underrated thing Stephen chow does in his movies is having select characters speak in mandarin instead of Cantonese. He does it in this movie with ahmei and he sounds so innocent and noob speaking mandarin lol

This is one of those times you see a title and a set of reactors and think, yeah, they're gonna love this.

I always suggest this one when ever someone watches Shaolin Soccer or Kung Fu Hustle, if you can find it, God of Cookery is batshit insane. like Iron Chef (the OG) taken to a ridiculous degree.

Mui, she shaved her head to become a nun (see her clothing) to appropriately be able to join the "shaolin" soccer team as the goalie. Fun fact, the "bald" head took 8-10 hours of makeup daily on set. The "ugly pimple face" took like 4 hours of makeup daily on set. Her face became clean because she went to do a makeover at the salon before the 25:16 scene. The hairdresser wipe her snot on her shoulder, that scene. So here at 25:16 you can see her face is already cleared up before the final nun goalie scene. Stephen Chow also made sure each scene is done well, lines are delivered with exactly what he wanted from the actors/actresses. He made sure the dialogue and words used are expressed with excellence. That's how the comedy is perfected. You got the DVD, but I don't know why the subtitles are not fully accurate to the translation (its not the original English subtitles from Miramax). Perhaps there is another subtitles you can set to in the dvd option? At least the sound effects are original. Here, you cut out the portions of some of the music that were changed to english music so couldn't tell if this part was correct.

Soccer-fices have to be made... Good one! I am glad you found this on DVD. It's nice to actually own a tangible version of the film, that won't ever disappear, if the streaming company happens to go bankrupt or something. ALSO, most of the streaming versions you can find have cut the first part out, which shows the back story of Golden Leg. There are also a few other things that seem to be cut, too. There used to be a few lower quality versions of the whole film, in various languages, but most of them were taken down. The dubbed versions aren't bad. (at least compared to other films) The main reason is that I think the actors in most cases dubbed their own voices. It's the same way for Kung Fu Hustle. One thing that typically plagues dubbed foreign films is that there is very little attempt to match the voice actors to the visual actors. This is one of my favorites, and I have no problem watching it again, whenever I feel like it. To me, it never gets old. You might want to check out some of his older stuff. Try "Flirting Scholar".

Shaolin Soccer is the best live action anime there is! Chow movies are basically comedy like Zucker Brothers movies (Naked Gun, Air Plane etc) but more surprising, combined with a freaking awesome action movie! Love it

Golden leg didn't mess up, he was bribed to fail his last penalty. He said trash to Hung because he was the one delivering the message, but he took the check, sealing his fate because Hung arranged for his leg to be broken.

Aside form Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer & Journey to the west. The rest are too chinese for westerners to fully pick up. There is only one other good movie "The Mermaid" directed by Stephen Chow but he didn't star in it and most of the cast is from Mainland China so it's missing the zany HK humor but it's worth a watch.

The reason she shaved her head: in the movie she said she didn't know how to trim her hair so she just cut it (this is a call back to the fact that she's very naive and knows nothing about cosmetics and stuffs). also, Shaolin is supposed to train monk but nobody in the Shaolin team shaved their hairs. so it makes sense if one person finally shaved hair.

This movie is basically like the Chinese equivalent to Police Academy.
