KTM 300 EXC TPI: The ultimate all-round dirt bike?

The fuel-injected KTM 300 two-stroke enduro bike makes so much sense as it's one machine that can pretty much do everything well. The bike is built to tackle obstacles with ease thanks to its smooth, linear power curve.
And of course it's a two-stroke so is light, fun to ride and easy to maintain. And the fuel injection means no more messing with jets or mixing fuel.
MotoHead's Dave Willet gets to grips with the bike that is consistently the biggest-selling dirt bike in KTM's range to see if the reality lives up to the hype.

Owning a 250 TPI, also missed the midrange kick, put on a FMF Fatty Header with the 2.1 Powercore. Absolutely loving it, would give it a try anytime

Imagine if KTM brought back a modernized 550 MXC with TPI. A street legal open class 2 stroke with reasonable gas mileage, improved tractability and mapping. It won't ever happen but what a dream machine that would be.

Don't be afraid to turn the power valve out. It totally wakes up the bike. My 300 was a total dog until I turned mine out about 1 1/2 full turns. Now its a crispy rocket ship!

I love my 21 TE 300I but 3 things could make this bike absolutely incredible. 1. Stiffer front forks. 2. Slightly more hit. 3. 10-15 pounds lighter. Bike isn’t that heavy but I feel for enduro riding a lighter bike would be amazing. It will happen eventually.

I have a suggestion if you haven't already, Maybe a lighter frame, My friend had a 2020 KTM 500 EXCF and it was heavy for him so he got a lighter frame I can't remember what one it was though, May he a carbon fibre or something, and the forks you could either get new ones or get them reworked maybe? Not to sure, I've never owned a KTM, Husky or Gasgas, it's just what I would try if I did own one

I've heard the low-end torque of the 300 EXC is really good. Is it kind of like the low end torque of a KX500, because I used to have one of those back in '04. I used it mostly for woods riding and a little open terrain riding. The low end torque was really strong and it also pulled good on open terrain at higher speeds. But I could never get the jetting right on that bike, so I ended up selling it after a couple of years. I'm wanting to get a KTM these days and get back into some woods riding.

Question: This seems like the ultimate bike for me but too expensive. Can I get similar performance in the slowest technical parts out of a 2019 Yamaha YX250 2-stroke if I change gearing? I'm looking for something that works both on a motocross track and offroad for a tall and heavy rider but isn't too expensive to buy and own.

300 better. Less shifting, more lug, more low and mid power, ride gear higher, less wheel spin, more traction, better hill climb, etc - 250 may feel lighter but so does a 125 too dosnt mean it’s better. The 300 can not be beat.

You have no idea how much control you'll have til you get in a tricky situation. It's very easy for powerful bikes to get away from you. One bump could cause you to whisky throttle (hitting the gas without meaning to or being ready) then you can crash

Ive been riding for 23 years. Ive done alot of Hard Enduro and MX Races. In my experience. If you are a beginner (I have taught many on many different bikes), Get a 250F Enduro bike. A Yamaha WR 250 is the best beginner bike (Unless you consider Air cooled 230cc bikes) any 250F is a great beginner bike. And it will be great on power for years. Jump on to the 2t 250/300s when you have the necessary clutch and throttle control that a 2t needs. However. If you are going to predominantly do very flat flowy trails. It doesnt make much of a difference what you get (As long as its not a 450)

3 reasons why the 300TPI will NEVER be the ultimate bike (speaking as a rider who currently owns 2 KTMs and have ONLY ridden KTMs since 2009): 1. WP Open Cartridge Front Suspension (anyone who has ridden them gets my point); 2. Engine Reliability - I had brand new 300 TPIs (2020 and 2021) - both suffered a critical failure in the crank after ~170 hours (mind you that both were top end rebuilt at 90H). 3. Fun Factor - this simply isn't an exciting bike. the engine is super smooth and linear and quite easy to ride, but it just doesn't really bring a smile to your face. of course, all of this is nonsense, because there is no such thing is an "ultimate bike"... as we all know it's about 90% the rider that counts... you all have a great ride 🤙🤙

I’d have them both if I could too for different reasons. I find the 150 so much fun because you still have to ride it and figure out the gear ratio and Rev range and it’s so light to manoeuvre. The 300 makes the job easy so you look for more tricky stuff to ride and it just ticks along them open areas with ease
