For the first time since 2014, I feel like I can't live without an XC-W. Many of my rides have gotten slower and more technical. For that type of riding the XC-W is king. No Linkage to worry about, soft forks, tight turning, lug factor,... smooth power.... it's all here on those days that I need it.
From what I can tell, the only things they changed for 2021 are plastics.
Geometry tweaks in the front end and frame
- More XC like in it's balance and feel
- New Frame for 2020! SWEET. It is stupid good.
- more balanced front to back - no more stink bug effect
Suspension tweaks
- best fork KTM has ever put on the XC-W
- absorbs the sharp nasty stuff really well
- can still get out and hit whoops but you use a lot of stroke.
- doesn't deflect!
Motor tweaks
- 2020 mapping starts SO MUCH BETTER than the 2019 version. Huge step up here
- many of these are really snappy, so much so that I stay with the gray throttle cam
- remember to tune your power valve to your liking. The all come different.
Bad:
- Rear fender setup
- No kickstart
- Power valve leak - many of the 2020 and 2021 bikes leak transmission fluid slowly out of the power valve gaskets
- Air bypass screw is stupid for adjusting the idle - give us a real way to adjust the idle without leaning the mix.
- No spark arrestor on these bikes
- Radiators can get pushed back and cut the lower radiator hose (power valve puncture)
- Needs an aftermarket capacitor to bump start on dead battery. XC has it... why not the XC-W?
Good:
- Tightest turning radius of any bike I've ever ridden. Love this for the nasty stuff.
- Motors are the smoothest (least vibration of any in the industry). Runs SUPER clean.
- Oil reservoir gives you 5+ tanks of fuel.
- Starts great - ambient air pressure sensor hasn't skipped a beat for me
- Suspension rings allow you to see how much travel you are using.
- Air filters standard across all the big bikes
- air filters with no tools
- One bolt seat is nice
- Lock on grips
- Pipes are tucked up and away
- Pipes are strong - won't get better performance with aftermarket.
Special thanks to my $10/month patrons on / dirtbikechannel

6:14 - as Billy Bolt mentioned, a lot of pro Hard Enduro riders (other than being mandatory using it) they run the tail light and licence plate holder because it's another way you can grab the bike , with that's extra plastic underneath (on Huskys and Katies). Of course it's not ideal, but just wanted to let you know. I know you guys in the States like to get those "XC-W's" (they're called EXC's here in Europe) naked but that's one of the reasons we don't (AND of course because we can ride them in the streets too). ;-)

Having recently bought a new2me 2020 300 XCW, I would say this review is fairly in line with my experience so far, other than he left out the 'bottom end sputter' issue. I was worried about the suspension coming off the XC, but its actually pretty awesome, the gearing is perfect for the tight gnar, and it does pull like a train!

Good review and agree. One think you missed about xc-w is the PDS rear suspension setup. I had a 17te250 and it was a great bike with lot of big improvements and super reliable sold it with 200 hours second owner still running it and very happy. Since I bought my 2020 250 xc-w I been able to climb stuff I would have never been able to on te250 especially slow nasty stuff 1-3 gear. I thought maybe it was the TPI power delivery being smooth and easy. Well I put a TSP High compression head/ECU reflash kit on my 20 250xc-w and it climbs even better now and it making way more power down low and mid. It got to be the PDS rear shock it just gets more traction and a more direct feel compared to linkage. Maybe I am wrong.

Hi Kyle, Something I've been wondering about is, I've never seen you add the kick starter? You've installed aftermarket items, better battery, capacitor and whatnot to get home. Why no kick starter kits? I had one installed on both my 2020 Husky 300 TEi and KTM 250 XCWi. The kit is about $200 - 225 so comparatively, it's not a break the bank investment. Just curious.

Kyle, Got a 22 300 xcw tpi. Maybe 35 miles on it. One tank of gas. Recent rides in Minnesota in 90 deg heat. 2-3rd gear on up or getting into gas it acts like a carb’d bike with rich jetting or too high of oil in a pre mix. Just won’t clean out under throttle. Added spark arrestor but it’s clear. Thoughts??

Quick question about the 300 xcw. Can you rev the bike really high and do motocross without blowing up the motor

Kyle, why the change? You used to complain about the gap between 2nd and 3rd gear on the XCW. Did you get use to the gap? Did KTM change the gearing?

Kyle, would you say that most of these 2020/21 advantages also apply to the XC? Frame geometry, suspension, TPI mapping, all those things?

Kyle i think you might just be a tinkerer. I got my 14 xcw from an a Enduro guy 220lbs stock suspension no head work, sag was the only thing he changed. Said you just need to get better at riding if your playing with settings every ride unless its because its unsafe. Grass is always greener on the other settings lol.

Wait til you ride a TM En they’re like the KTM but with more refinement. A treat indeed! But the KTM is still amazing. The new bikes are so dang good off the showroom floor now! Great review!

I've done Sherco 3 times but it's been a couple years on the 2T Sherco. Still need to get to the GasGas. So little time. I've done Beta, Sherco, KTM and Yamaha in the last 12 months. That ain't bad.

Kyle, its about time you brought in a new 350 xc-f. They have changed a ton since your last one and just may be the best all around bike there is. Keep at least one 4 stroke in your stable!

I just bought a 2021 350 XC-F for my son. What a machine! Very easy to ride, but an absolute beast when you grab a hand-full of throttle. The 350 feels a little heavier than my 300XCW even though it weighs a few pounds less. In fast terrain I fell like I could ride the 350 XC-F quite a bit faster than my 300 XCW. Maybe Kyle should get a 350 XC-F every year instead of the usual 250 XC for faster riding conditions.
