Kris Kristofferson - For the good times (1970)
Музыка
Fair use - no copyright violation intended
"For the good times" from Kris' debut album "Kristofferson".
It's so sad and beautiful at the same time...
Great lyrics as always, and this beautiful tune ... I love it!
Of course this song was not written about Rita and him,
but things always happen twice in one's lifetime...
It was Kris' first No 1 country hit as a writer in 1970
It was "Song of the Year" (and "Single Record of the Year") of the Academy of Country Music in 1970 -
(That was the first time a writer had won "Song of the Year" awards from both the Country Music Association - with "Sunday Mornin' comin' down"- AND the Academy of Country Music for different songs in the same year)
In 1971 Ray Price won a Grammy Award for "Best Male Country Vocal Performance" with it.
The scenes are from the movies
"The last honor of Kathryn Beck"- aka "Act of Passion" (1984) and
"Blood and Orchids" (TV, 1986).
Both movies are great to me and worth watching anyway, but only available on VHS tapes.
... The latter one is available on DVD now
www.amazon.com/dp/B0035QHNVU
Kris already began to write the song in 1968, in his Opel, on one of his endless rides from Nashville to the Gulf.
"I began a song about making love to a woman for the last time. After a while the melody really got to me. I couldn't wait to get to a guitar. I was riding along thinking about that part where it says, 'Hear the whisper of the raindrops blowin' soft against the window,' and I wondered if I could play it. I wrote only the first part of the lyrics then. A while went before I finished it, I can't remember how long.... But I do remember who I wrote it about." Probably it was inspired by the dying days of his relationship to Fran...
Now it's hard to believe that for a time some radio stations wouldn't play the original recording by Bill Nash because of its "overtly sexual content"; indeed for a brief time, Kris couldn't even find anyone who wanted to record the song... And then? A spokeman for Buckhorn Music, which published the song shortly before Kris switched to Combine Music, said later, "It's recorded by pretty much everyone who comes into town to do an album, Englebert Humperndinck, Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Chet Atkins, Loretta Lynn and many more."
For the good times
Don't look so sad, I know it's over
But life goes on and this old world
will keep on turning
Let's just be glad we had some time
to spend together
There's no need to watch the bridges
that we're burning
Lay your head upon my pillow,
hold your warm and tender body close to mine
Hear the whisper of the raindrops
blowin' soft against the window
And make believe you love me one more time
For the good times
I'll get along, you'll find another
And I'll be here if you should find
you ever need me
Don't say a word about tomorrow or forever
There'll be time enough for sadness
when you leave me
Lay your head upon my pillow
Hold your warm and tender body close to mine
Hear the whisper of the raindrops
Blowin' soft against my window
Make believe you love me
one more time
For the good times
For the good times (1968)
dicht an meinen

Not even Kris?!? You're kidding... To me this song is magic with Kris only... He knew the meaning of every single word in it.... he wrote it... on a lonesome drive from Nashville to the Gulf where he 'd fly a helicopter to the oil rigs. But that's my opinion...I just love his voice that can express so many emotions and much prefer to hear him sing every single song of him himself.

Hey Peter Garth here in Dublin. Great you feel it, 70 or whatever. The song is sad as bejaysus, no question. Better to have loved than lost though right? For a fella, to get with a woman like so, well, hell, that's something. Saw Kris live about every time he came to Ireland, momma was in love with him, don't tell daddy! All's I'm saying is smile in the presence of LOVE, gone or still present. X hugs from li'l ole Ireland

I so agree 😊👍
Such a beautiful heartwarming song. They don't make them like this anymore. These gems never get old.
My earliest memories were of laying beneath the piano as my father played. As I got older, I recognized he had bad habits in playing, and affectations that marred his music. He played with great panache, but seldom with great feeling. In his later years, he grew sicker and weaker in the mind and he began to not be able to play. He was giving up on life. He just wasn't meant to be an old man. He couldn't be weak or frail. It just wasn't him. Playing the piano now just made him frustrated because he couldn't execute anymore. One day he played a song I had never heard him play, - not in his repertoire which I knew backward and forwards - and all the affectations and bad habits were shed. It was just him playing not from his head but from his heart. It was the most beautiful I'd ever heard him play. Flawless and perfectly tempo'd., tender and warm and so real it sent shivers across my skin. He put whatever remaining life he possessed into that song. He finished and said quietly "For the Good Times." That was the last I ever heard him play. He died shortly after. My father was not an emotional man, nor was he nostalgic - but he played this song from memory, or ear, or from the ether, and played it perfectly, but more importantly it came straight from his soul in a way that I had never seen him allow - and it was power-ful. Somewhere along the line he heard this song, and it made a permanent impression upon him, long before I was born. This was what his version sounded like. I just wanted to share that story. Peace.

Thank you for sharing this. And yes, this original version by Kris is just the most emotional version of his song. Maybe the one on the Austin Sessions even topped it. Have you ever heard that one? kzread.info/dash/bejne/oYxkm5aHnpeyj7w.html
This was my late sister's favourite song. After she died, her husband missed her very much. So I sent him the song/lyrics of Kris Kristofferson's hit. I play this song whenever I remember her.

Ruggedly Handsome, the kind of guy you want to cuddle up with in a cabin in the woods next to the fireplace !
I heard an interview with Kris K. on NPR about 15 years ago. Two things I remember he said. One was that if he lost all his money tomorrow, he would be a millionaire in a year from the royalties of just 4 songs, Bobby McGee, Sunday Mornin", Help Me Make It and this one. He also said that For The Good Times was the song he wanted played at his funeral.

Too beautiful…. Yep. I bawl my eyes out too. At 76. The power of love.
Kristofferson was and is one of the all time great poet/songwriters. I don't think his voice ever came close to matching his writing, but so many recorded so much of his work that he's likely heard as much as anyone ever has been. From Johnny Cash to Janis Joplin to Willie Nelson his words are heard by hundreds of millions. Pretty elite company Kris resides in. Van Zandt is another whose words had a magical quality. Just words, but strung together in such a way as to capture feelings like few ever could.
my lifetime favorite song. must have played it hundred thousand times or more. thank you KK for the music. it will forever be my #1 song in my late 60's now and still listening to the song that I love since the 70's again. thank you very much.

Hello Pam, how are you doing??
Brilliant. Kristofferson hits the soul perfectly. What a song.
What a beautiful melancholic voice. I was 13 when I first heard this in 1970.
I really loved it tell my whole life
Brings me back to a time nobody else can, or will, ever know about.

For me; bittersweet
Pretty sure here I ain't the only guy who loses it at lines like "there's no need to watch the bridges that we're burning" or "make believe you love me one more time". Also: A real man reveals his true strength when he allows his soft emotional side to show. Kris is just that - a real man. Hats off to Kris in crafting the best breakup song ever ...

I went to the 50 year celebration of Tootsies in Nashville TN. Kris did many of his songs as the main guest of Steve's the owner. It was a wonderful show and I was so fortunate to score tickets from Steve.

One of my favourites. Kris is sometimes is a stranger for lot of people but I really think he is a great representative of country music. Love his music in general and this song specially. Love you Kris !
I will always remember these times and I pray some day you do too. Great LOVE is never buried or forgotten. Someday in a another place or another time perhaps. I am truly sorry it wasnt forever in this place or time for you. I hope you find what your searching for. May God watch over you always.

I think so too. It is why I kept coming back to it over the years (I had more than my fair share of break-ups!) The words and melody are so melancholic but gorgeous too. They say it all.

@@JoePublicEnemyNo1 That isn't break up. It is telling you, in no uncertain terms, that that person is not going to support you in anything you say or do unless you agree with every one of his ideological certainties.

Ray Price's version had impeccable phrasing and orchestration. Elvis's version was too... Elvis. Kris's version is unfiltered, showing exactly what he, as the songwriter, was feeling when he wrote it. In other words... Damn!

What an artist. A true artist eloquently induces his feelings into the listener with his voice and way of words while writing. Such beautifully sung and written ART portrayed by one of the greatest song writers ever! It’s quite wild I’ve never listened to him other than in the “highwayman” my focus of beautiful music will include this man here until I pass!
amazing talented singer songwriter beautiful voice thanks for all your amazing music kris
