What I believe is the easiest way to garden, the Kratky Method still requires some understanding of general hydroponics and a few tools for measuring the waters Ph and EC. If you want to know how to grow plants in mason jars in your window, watch this video. There is also the dreaded algae to watch out for so be sure to watch to the end to get my algae beating tips for your Kratky jar garden setup.

A few tips for the viewers: No need to buy those expensive net pots. Instead you can use discarded (used) and clean k-cup pods. Just cut some slits in the bottom and sides. Instead of the expensive clay pebbles, get a bag of calcined clay. This is the stuff that they put on ballfields, put in kitty litter, and use in auto shops to soak up oil spills. If using kitty litter be sure to use the type without any addictives or chemicals. Instead of construction paper to block out light and to prevent algae, use empty chip bags or empty brown paper bags. If you wish, you can have shiny side out when using chip bags. I have heard that some people like to use aluminum foil. You can use thin masking tape to cover a vertical area of your grow jar. Then to check the roots, just peal it to peek and reapply.

Nice video. I was thinking for a second you were going to skip the algae issue. Covered it nicely.

When I was in the vegetable industry, we ALWAYS used EC meters. I bought one today actually but it's both ppm and EC. You showed it on the screen as TDS&EC, the one in the middle. Cost me half the price of a McDonald's meal.
I'm about to jump in! Just testing the waters, so to speak. I'm starting my seeds on cotton balls. As for covering jars, how about socks or a long sleeve shirt with elastic on the cuff. (This could get really decorative! Lol) Thanks for videos. I just watched my first 2, so I have more to checking up! *I love how shirt & to-the-point your videos are as well!

I’m a beginner and have been watching different videos seeing different ideas and I have to say I enjoyed yours a lot so thank you for your knowledge!
Quart large mouth canning jars and screw on lids are the perfect size to drop the little slotted pots in.
I grew for 14 yra and I learned some things new from you. Hydro is the best way to grew anything atip for you and air bubbler from fish tank shop does wonders I really like the airponics setup that produces a mist in the space between the plant cup and the surface of the water. I also love the ebb and flow system because I can automate the system with a simple timer and a pump. Love and kisses Bob

Thanks for coming to the point so fast. This is helpful for a very beginner.I now try to figure out how many nutrients I need. Hope to find a video that explains this ph/ppm thing a bit more detailed :) ... so far thank you. You have a fine sense of humor , I was laughing here and there 🙂

I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!! New to growing veggies and I have never heard of the Kratkey method until I saw this video. I love how you drilled the hole in the lid of the jar for a perfect sized pot insert.....now I know what to do with all my jars that I have been holding on to! Thanks so much for the tips

@@seanleith5312lol it’s a method founded by Bernard Kratky, a researcher at the University of Hawaii who came across this way in his work there 😅 don’t think he meant to invent anything for the mainstream or even thought his name would be slapped on its label…
Thanks for the info. You might benefit by having Amazon associates links in description for meters and supplies that you mentioned. 👍🍻
Hello friend. I grow houseplants in hydropony and I do it as much naturaly as possible. To avoid green water, the perfect algae eater is Daphnia magna. Iam not sure if it can survive in such a concetration of nutrients, as I dose it weekly. Another possibilities to oxygenate the water if we want to avoid electric oxygenating or using H2O2 is to add moss ball, or just part of it . This plant is super slow growing but the best oxygenator I know. It will not consume nutrients but it will produce tons of oxygen. To lower PH is possilbe to use peat moss as bottom of jar. I know this wont be Kratky anymore, but its more natural way. Enjoy guys.

So what about how much nutrients, what kind, do you cycle the water at some point, does it chamge depending on what you're growing, etc???
Make a sleeve from construction paper and resealable tape Uncover when desired.
Never tried that har method still i made one from an old pickle jar it seems fine but i havent put anything in it yet waiting for the seeds to crackle and grow . I mostly grow with dwc setups easy and gives alot growth and fruit . Good explanations !!
What nutrients are you using for the plants.
This video was great! Great method and teaching as well.

For basic kitchen herbs, is there any benefit to just using the clay pebbles vs coconut or the "Rapid Rooter" plugs?
Hello, was that the 3 bottle bloom nutrients? If so how much of each for that gallon size jar? thank you
is weed also compactible with the kratky method? And if so can it replace my 25x9.6l airpots? (5x5 in a 120x120cm tent with mars hydro ts3000)

I think it is but you'd be best to give it a new batch of nutrients every month or two. Apparently hydroponics with pumps is far better than kratky resulting in better quality.
I would like advice on what to do with plants that move to the cold for the winter, stop watering,....they should have their own winter biorhythm. I am in Europe where the plants are allowed to "rest" for the winter. What should I do if I convert them to hydroponics?
I havent grown food in water but I have grown ornamental plants this way. When they get algae, I just add hydrogen peroxide. Would that work in this situation?

This is a really cool way of growing plants. Are there any worries for pests, or are pests not so much of an issue with this method due to there being no soil media for them to lay their eggs?

You have to look at the fertiliser packaging. Honestly most lettuce will take 3 to 6 litres each. You're best with a larger jar. And make sure that they're painted black or covered with fabric or something to block the light to the water. Or it will grow algae.

@@OffGridInvestor thank you very much
What is the nutrient solution that is used ?
thanks, just starting. i wonder can there be something more for this system to stimulate nature (like some minimal structure for roots since growing in soil vs water is so polar opposite) to make it even better, or might be just too minimal min maxing because it seems too good to be true in itself :p
Hi how long do plants need for light under a hydroponics system?

I recommend starting with 12 on 12 off then switching to 16-18on once they start flowing.

Would the light reflection from the aquarium be safe enough not to get algae in your glass?

Do you never refill the water?

Nope, not In a kratky setup. You can certainly transfer the plant to a larger kratky setup if you want to continue growing, and so on.

Only if you get problems like the EC level (used to check nutrient concentration) or ph goes miles off. But generally not.
@SuperiorZebra. A really cheap solution is to buy a packet of black construction paper, cut it the right height, encircle the jar and use a paper clip to hold in place.

A cheaper solution is to use an empty bag from potato chips, etc. Or even a brown paper bag from your favorite fast food. Why "buy" construction paper when so many other "free" choices are available?
Tried this method. Worked good for a month till it was 95deg out side. Then I suspect the water is too hot. My plants died
Hello!! Love all of your videos! Im looking to start a moving air fogponics system, because of how cool I think it is. I would really love to use clear walls of some kind to see the roots as the develop, but that makes me a little nervous... I'm designing it now and would love your thoughts! Would love to link up over messages if you ever have the chance to do a design review!
Don't you need to change/top-up the water? I imagine PH goes up meaning less nutrient absorption, also without a pump there is less oxygen in the water..
Thank you

For starting seeds, not really. But you can definitely grow seedlings once they’ve sprouted. Probably depends on the growing medium though, for seedlings I’d say rockwool is best.
