Pretty much all the points you made can be easily fixed. The cramped roots are a design flaw easily fixable and can be printed in parts for small printers. The ridges can be sanded slightly and then a few coats of epoxy would make it food safe and may even negate the sanding.

Is it worth the trouble? Maybe for some, but to simply dismiss it and say it can't be done is very near sighted.

Also don't see it as the whole part needing to be 3d printed. You can just print the part that holds the plant and attach it to a pvc pipe so then you may get the best of both worlds

.. I'm confused.. I'm pretty sure that I tell people how to fix every problem to make it food safe.... Then explain why I (a 10 year hydroponics expert) would not grow in one because of the light leaking, and the root size... I have never personally seen a 3d printed tower that has adequate root space for "real" gardens (like tomatoes, cucumber, peppers...) thanks for your input, but perhaps you should watch it again, all the way through...

Tower gardens are made from food safe plastics, yet still contain a prop 65 warning. How do we know that food safe plastics don't leach chemicals into the water, when exposed to chemicals used in aeroponics? Food safe, when used as specified, i don't think any of the plastics are tested for leaching in this application, but please point me in that direction if you know of some tests. Regarding 3d printed towers, bacterial contamination is a moot point - soil isn't sterile. Plants can't physically absorb single cell bacteria. Ergo is there really any difference that we know of, when examining the possibility of leaching, through the lens of safety of a Tower Garden vs 3d, cheap Chinese or whatever?

I just came across your video. I dont do hydroponics but I do respect what you are communicating here. The nozzle concern is a bit extra. Yes mercury and so on can get inside but the shear quantity after being filtered through the plastic, dirt, and plant is negligable. Your nornal garden at home will have mercury, radon, asbestos, arsnic, and so on in it and in very large quantities. Unless you are using purified water, it will have more in it than the nozzle. What id be concerned about is byproducts in the plastic like you said. For the bacteria growth and fungal growth, I do wonder how bad this actually will be. Most plants expect to live in these conditions, i think i would have to look into this. But from where i stand i know of plants growing in much worse conditions with nearly 0 affect. I would like to see real data support this. I think 3D printing and hydroponics has a place though. Just not what is traditional. Working on a farm my whole life i can say that I 100% agree on the root spacing, but i also assume someone making a hydroponics system that small isnt trying to grow something for real. If 3D printing is to be used i think it would benefit from making light fixtures, plant supports, unique fittings with resin, and organization tools like for piping or hosing.

I think this comes on a little aggressive and overly negative rather than informational. The tone you have for each of these points makes it sound difficult to over come them, however many of them are simple fixes or don't apply to many people printing. Your argument about brass nozzles does need some tweaking, but is definitely correct. It is the lead they use in the manufacturing that is an issue, not the iron. Plants and people need iron. However, it is super easy to get stainless steel nozzles and I agree with that. Paying attention to the plastic you are using for these devices is super important. It is trivial to get filament that does not include BPA's. Pointing this out as something to watch for is very good, but at the same time this video feels like it is getting close to fear mongering rather than helping people do it correctly. I appreciate your videos, and they have helped me make my own tower garden that has successfully done jalapenos, green beans, peas, and lettuce. I did get some tomato's as well, but they proved difficult to manage in an apartment.

  • @humblegrowth

You're absolutely right about the Lead and I need to address that I said the wrong thing. Thank you for pointing that out. wasn't trying to fear monger, simply point out the facts and offer alternatives. like I say early in the video, "this may not bother you" in reference to the toxicity issues. None the less, they are all facts that would keep me from building one. Just trying to help people who care about that sorta thing. Some people Do take things like micro plastic toxicity, bacteria cultures and lead poisoning verry seriously, so, I do apologies if I came off more concerned than you would have liked.

@@robertevans7020 no, I think you're right. The video comes across as an opinion presented as unsubstantiated fact. For example, most people print with PLA, which I believe is considered food grade. By comparison, a 5 gal bucket is generally made from PET which is only food grade if it wasn't recycled. PETG is better for outdoor use and also food safe if not recycled. The smoothing may not be a real issue. I'd want to see it tested and proved rather than just assuming it'll grow mold. I don't have any issues cleaning 3d prints, so I'd expect them to probably be fine for this too. The main reason to 3D print rather than using buckets is creativity. With printing, you can create shapes you just won't find recycling other items. Always good to hear opinions of people with experience. I love the idea of aquaponics!

I have a vertical grow tower that I'm growing lettuce in. It gets natural light outside in a green house and the lettuce leaves are growing really well, though stunted a bit. The issue I'm having is that the lettuce isn't growing long roots, and I think it's stunting the overall size of the lettuce. The white roots are completely rootbound within the rockwool cubes they are in, but they aren't going out any further. The white roots are sticking out about 1/4" from the net cup that houses the rock wool, but that's it. I tried increasing the watering schedule (its currently every 2 hours for 20minues), but it doesn't seem to be making the roots grow any further. Is this natural for a vertical tower system?

A few tips for the viewers: No need to buy those expensive net pots. Instead you can use discarded (used) and clean k-cup pods. Just cut some slits in the bottom and sides. Instead of the expensive clay pebbles, get a bag of calcined clay. This is the stuff that they put on ballfields, put in kitty litter, and use in auto shops to soak up oil spills. If using kitty litter be sure to use the type without any addictives or chemicals. Instead of construction paper to block out light and to prevent algae, use empty chip bags or empty brown paper bags. If you wish, you can have shiny side out when using chip bags. I have heard that some people like to use aluminum foil. You can use thin masking tape to cover a vertical area of your grow jar. Then to check the roots, just peal it to peek and reapply.

Hello friend. I grow houseplants in hydropony and I do it as much naturaly as possible. To avoid green water, the perfect algae eater is Daphnia magna. Iam not sure if it can survive in such a concetration of nutrients, as I dose it weekly. Another possibilities to oxygenate the water if we want to avoid electric oxygenating or using H2O2 is to add moss ball, or just part of it . This plant is super slow growing but the best oxygenator I know. It will not consume nutrients but it will produce tons of oxygen. To lower PH is possilbe to use peat moss as bottom of jar. I know this wont be Kratky anymore, but its more natural way. Enjoy guys.

To me, this would be akin to buying a cheap tower off amazon. 3d printed objects will NEVER BE FOOD SAFE. The molecular structure leaves far too many gaps in the composite. Even if you buy "food grade" filament, the gaps allow soooo much bacteria to thrive that they will never be considered food safe. 3d printed towers are becoming super popular and I get it. But I also don't want to eat micro plastics that leach into my garden, or have bacteria thriving in my garden walls. Thank you for your input, I appreciate every angle and perspective here.
