I honestly agree with the first one so much. I personally feel like a song should be at least 200 seconds long, or 3 minutes and 20 seconds, so having releases less that 3 minutes is an easy way to disappoint me, and that's not mentioning those that edge closer to 2.

for number 4 it also annoys me that some dance choreografies are definetly aimed at the easy social media trend type style than actually interesting and fitting choreos. For number 5, as an artist myself, it sometimes just happens that you come up with a similar idea. While in my case i do check if a similar style is in a currently competing market, it can just happen, especially if ideas arent THAT intricate/creative. Money and time also play a role here, because if artists arent given resources , there is a limit of how much depth you can put into an idea and make it more standout from another.

The thing I’ve always wondered regarding the airport situation: where and how tf do Korean fans find out when Kpop idols’ flights happen? Like it’s actually creepy that Kpop fans know such private information and choose to breach it by traveling to the airport to film them when official news stations like Newsen and Dispatch already do the job for them? Do they not have anything better to do? I also would never go the airport cuz I legit have better things to do than that, so I’m with you

It’s so weird I know, but a few years ago I read somewhere that their flight schedules are shared to fan sites and the info is leaked so Korean fans know when the artist is there, tho idk where I heard that so take it with a grain of salt

There are actually fanpages operating from korea who are paid by the companies to be at airports or even follow the artists to make and publish photos. Usually they have expensive camera equipment semi-financed by the companies/management as well. And ofc they get infos and even plane tickets to follow the idols and do their "job"

Agree with everything except for the comeback teasing for that long IF it's done well. I follow ATEEZ and their comeback maps are epic. You're engaged and locked in for six weeks of new and exciting bits to look forward to. It's definitely nothing like the sparse teasing method some artists use which I agree is boring and doesn't built up excitement. I also hope that the airport stalking stops and that companies make an effort to better protect their artists. (and every day I pray for Pannchoa getting hit by that one lawsuit that ends them all)

In regards to Number 4, I feel like the only dance challenge for a k-pop song this year that wasn't made to get views and clout was "The First Snow" challenge. Now, I am an Exo-L, but I truly believe that this challenge was the one not to have any major label push behind it. For one, it's for a song from TEN YEARS ago and a B-SIDE at that. Not a title track, but a b-side. When it was originally released it never got any major promotion aside from a few music show performances, but that's it. Obviously, Exo's winter releases are a staple in Korea and have been for years, so when it does snow for the first time in Korea, the song starts to trend. However, in the last few years it has never trended like this. I mean, the challenge wasn't even made by SM or the exo members, but a tiktoker (Hwang Sehun is his name btw!), who simply made it for fun. And soon enough, everyone single person jumped on it, from actors, to other idols, to everyday people. And not just in Korea, but in other countries like China, Thailand, Japan, and the Phillipines. And what did SM do until recently? Nothing. They didn't even claim the audio until a few days go. The exo members also didn't jump on the train until like last week (they are busy ofc), and when it went number one a few days ago, most of the members were extremely grateful and surprised. I mean, the song got like 14(?) RAKs. Like that's insane if you think about it. Ofc, this is no shade to any other dance challenges that also happened this year, some of them were really fun. But I feel like the First Snow challenge was the only one that was intended to be just that. Fun. That's it. Nothing more. Nothing less.

YES 1000x for the airport one. I'm pretty new to kpop, so the mobbing at the airport and obsession with "airport style" is still completely baffling to me. Like, sure some western celebrities get their photo taken when they're traveling, but it's either a planned photo op or just the usual papparazzi following them, not a mass of fans with cell phones. I've only travelled once by myself via plane and it was the most stressful day of my life, so I can't imagine how much terrifying it can be for idols. I think it was one of the nugu groups like Riize that came under fire bc one of their security basically punched a fan (that was likely a saseang) out of the way when she was getting too close, but if I were in their place I would have pushed the security out of the way to punch her myself. I'm also really annoyed by the ages and ages of teasers for comebacks. It can be fun if they've got lore and story and such, like Ateez does, but if it's just a garden variety group/concept then by the time they actually start the comeback I'm usually already bored. However, and this might be a stretch, but I actually think it's at least partially about giving fans (particularly young ones whose money is gonna come from their parents) time to save up enough cash to buy the album and merch and tour tickets. Which, honestly, if that really is at least part of their goal, I don't mind. It's capitalism, but I guess kind of a courteous one? I have no interest in the physical merch side of kpop, collecting photo cards or having an overpriced hunk of paper with more photos that are just gonna end up online anyways is not my bag. I got grownup shit to spend my money on and no space for collections. But i'm in the minority, and I get why most kpop fans enjoy that stuff. So for them, all the leadup just feeds their magpie tendencies. Seeing all the different album versions and photo sets makes them want more, whereas if they only have a week or 2 to decide they'll just get 1 album and focus their photo card collecting on their bias. Or at least that's what my experience working retail has taught me. It's also not really new or exclusive to kpop. I'm a longtime metalhead, and I've seen bands put merch and such up for presale waay earlier than these kpop groups do, and even play multiple new songs at shows a month or more before the album drop date. Tho I guess the social media aspect wasn't as much of a thing back in my peak metalhead days, so kpop does have a monopoly on that.

For point 5, I also have a recent example of this "copying" that fans seem uncabable of understanding. Aespa had a comeback with Drama, absolutely amazing song and the mv starts with a dark scene and the members in the middle of this group, then it turns red and black. Cool. Now itzy had a comeback, and their born to be song started the exact same way. It definitely feels similar, but these comebacks are planned months ahead. You can't just look at a comeback that was released a month (+ week) and copy that. All of the comebacks have a budget, planners and everything needs to be bought for them so copying is just impossible. It's so dumb.

The TikTok trend really went over my head and maybe that’s why I hate it, but I hate all these challenges. Promote your music, not another dumb TikTok challenge 🙃🙃 About the copying allegations…it just shows narrow minded fans And about album releases, in a world where groups have 2-3 comebacks a year with a pre release, I absolutely get your point, because your barely out of the comeback, when the next one is announced, but it just drags for so long. Like, why even still call it comeback? You were never gone 😂 but generally I like the comebacks building up. But I’m also a 3rd gen stan, so 🤷🏼‍♀️

i agree with everything you said, but i would add something that i notice a lot in k-pop lately and it annoys me- songs in english. i mean, it's okay if it's full in english but mixing korean and english annoys me so bad. when i started getting into k-pop, songs were mainly in korean with a pinch of english lyrics and i want that back. i get it that companies want to pave the way overseas, but for me, adding english lyrics is ruining k-pop for me. don't get me started on how these lyrics can be nonsense sometimes. i get it if someone prefers english over korean lyrics because it "universal language" that majority of people speak, but i don't and reason is simple- we don't need to understand the lyrics to enjoy the song. music should be universal language. i don't need to know how to pronounce some korean word in order to vibe with song, if i like it- i'll vibe no matter what language is. just bring back good old korean pop, please🙏 Merry Christmas to everyone that celebrate, stay happy with people that you love. Wish every single one of you so much light in life. Take care of youself and your loved ones, guys🌠

I agree with the 1st and 2nd so much, most of the time that bridge that makes the last chorus hit SO hard. But there's no time for that in a 2 and a half minute song., there's barely time to fit 2 verses and 2 choruses. One thing that I REALLY want to leave behind in 2023 is chant chorus, like please, I want meaningful or playful lyrics in a chorus not the same word over and over again, I'm tired of that. One of the reasons my songs of the year are things like Chill Kill by RV, Bonvoyage and OOTD by Dreamcather. They have FULL CHORUSES, and e a bridge and are over 2 and a half minutes. (Tho OOTD doesn't have a long recognisable bridge the outro makes up for it imo, and it maybe not be over 3 minutes but still more then 2 and a half)

I feel like one thing that NEEDS to go is debuting minors. Like at the very least in the middle of age 16. Theres just so many cons.. 1) their missing out on their childhood. I mean we got idols that debut at 14 when they should be starting high school like?? And theres some idols now that regret it! 2) creeps, perverts, people that like children.. but in a sexual way. Fucking gross 3) the industry is hardcore. You cant date, you cant have an ex-relationship (cough cough seunghan) and more to the list. People will shame you if youre "overweight" and discredit you or anything else when that person cant even sing or dance. It destroying that young idols self esteem and teaching them to be people pleasers. Gross! Plus if the company just waits until their illegal and THEN debut, theyve basically been marinating all sorts of tips and stuff and become a showstopping idol. But time is money i guess?

EXACTLYYYYYYYYY and the fact that idols tend to train for about 2 years before debuting!!! so the extra young idols start even EARLIER and are exposed to the harsh work environment even before the public sees them! and knowing how exploitative the industry in general is, there is NO way these girls are getting paid or treated fairly and they likely have to endure a lot of rude and gross people that just so happen to be the ones in charge of whether or not they debut🤮
