Daniel shows you how to make Korean Grilled Mackerel. This is a very common homecooking dish in Korea. Pacific Mackerel is light, white fish that's rich in omega 3. Best of all, its cheap too! Great to include as part of a balanced diet. I grew up eating it at least once a week!
I also show you how to make Braised Mackerel with Radish. This is a savory dish, where we braise mackerel and radish in a flavored soy sauce broth. The result is what we call a "rice killer". See video for more!

If you're not going to eat rice... 😱😱😱There's a few other ways to reduce that fishy odour. #1) Soak in milk for 10-15 minutes (Substance called Casein found in milk that binds with the fish odor) #2) Pour 1:1 equal amount of vinegar + cold water (Not as effective as milk, reduced smell about 50%) For both ways, remember to rinse-off afterwards! Always say no to Stinky Fish!

Do you think soaking the fish in a cornstarch+water mixture would work? Since I don't have any rice water atm, I think I'll try that.. 🐠

Vinegar work for me for soaking the fish like 10 minutes
One thing that puzzles me is people complaining about the fishy taste from fish. Come on, its freaken fish..if u want it to taste like chicken then eat chicken.
Mum would never cook *anything* spicy, so having spicy Sunday lunch with your mum sounds quite lovely. 😄

When you say you're full, she'll offer an extra two dishes. Then some peeled fruit. Oh and then some snacks from Costco. If you refuse any of them, you'll fail the test of being an honorable Asian guest. 🤣
Hahaha...I love the honesty about plating. No one at home does a fancy plating when you're hungry.
The dishes look so yummy. I want some fish and rice now. And as much as I loved this video, I love more how down to earth you are. The surprise over the spring onion part made me laugh too hard

Hehe. That's the best part about homecooking... No need to fake the funk... just work with what you got!
You are not only the best online teacher-chef but also it's pure entertainment to watch your videos as well. Really appreciate your work.
Thank you Dan-Yul! The Braised mackerel is really simple to do and looks really good
Dude, I'm really salivating right now. The braised mackerel looks really really delicious 🤤

Thank you so much for these amazing videos!!!
I love the plates you use at the end!
Thankyou. Tried the fried recipe for tea last night. No smell, no splatter, never used seasoned flour before, it was absolutely delicious. Also noticed the fish didn't repeat afterwards.
Thank you for sharing these yummy recipes. I will definitely try them!😊
Thank you. I tried your recipe during this quarantine. It is super delicious.
Yes! This video is on point with the info and humor is epic on timing u guys rock
Thank you for making this video. I need to learn how to make it. My mom used to cook for me. The second recipe is what I am looking for. Thank you again. Can't wait to make it my own.
I came across your channel by fluke and I’m glad I did. You’re hilarious and I like how you use your arm and finger to measure food. By the way, I enjoy Katie’s random comments, she makes me smile☺️😄 I’m going to try several of your recipes, I’m big on easy and flavourful dishes!
thanks so much for this! 20 years ago i was a server at a korean owned sushi restaurant, and the cooks would make a mackerel stew as the staff meal and I've been thinking about it ever since!
I'm salivating!! That looks so yummy!!!
Yayyyy thank you for the recipe!!!
My favorite dish!!!! This is a dish I eat when I visit my mom. She knows a woman at a local Korean diner and calls ahead that we are coming so they can cook it extra long for us. The radish that soaked up all the spices is like crack to me. Thanks for sharing this video!
Enjoyable, thanks for showing how to side step the bones. You crack me up!!!
this is perfect I happen to have two mackerel in the freezer so there is supper sorted. Many thanks
I tried the first recipe, and it was delicious with just a bit of salt and flour. Came out crispy and perfect. My first time doing bone-in fish and I was so happy about how it turned out.
I know for a fact that I'm going to try the first one, omg. It's 9AM, I've already eaten and still, I'm salivating here.
Beautiful!, thank you
Both food looks so delicious, thank you for nice recipe.
Phht! My chopstick skills are most definitely on point. A year or so back while eating at a Taiwanese hot pot restaurant an elderly Asian lady at the next table was amazed by my finesse with chopsticks. That's when I knew . . . the student had become the master.

Thx for the recipe, just what I am looking for. A sudden craving. 😅
I have to try this. I got a bag of frozen mackerel and I love Korean Radish...it looks like a satisfying meal for the weekend.
Thank you for sharing this because I'll be having these mackerel recipes in our household. It looks Healthy and easy quick simple meal, that's what I like. New subscriber.
Thank you for this video! We also eat a lot of mackerel in my family, but I was never really taught how to cook it, but now I can try. My grandma told me this trick, if I ever accidentally eat a fishbone, swallowing a spoonful of rice will make it less painful lol
ughhh this made me salivate SO much..... gotta make it asap
Man I went to Korea twice last year and I'm totally in love with the braised fishes.. and the galchi jorim at Namdaemun (?) omg. I'm gonna give this a try
Wow! I love your recipe! Thanks for sharing yours! I usually make my Braised Mackerel with a much more simple recipe! - From One Korean to Another!
It’s not ugly it’s awesome this is my favourite dishes ❤
Looks good! I have never made fish before and I definitely want to try these out sometime ^^
I went to Sydney fish market today. Bought some mackeral. Made it. Belissimo!
Thank you!! I tried the first one, but didn’t have the curry (substituted with salt) and it was still really good. It’s such an oily fish. I didn’t realize that!
I'm glad to see that you cut the bottles also to get stuff out🤣. I want to move to eating more fish. Thanks, look delicious.
Looks so yummy
I love braised mackerel very much ! It’s yummy !
If the fish has a head, another good tip to know if the fish is fresh is to look at the eyes. Fresh fish have nice glossy eyes. If the fish is not so fresh, the eyes look dull and dried.
The dishes look yummy I really want to eat these.
😋😋😋😋😋😋😋 They all look so good! The 2nd looks like it would be my favorite too!! 😍😍😍😍
I lived in korea for a year several years ago my best friends Korean grandma literally taught me all her family's recipes
I had grilled mackerel from H mart yesterday and it was so good!
Love it..yum!
Such a wonderful surprise to see you guys uploaded after I just took a stressful final exam😌 Recipe looks awesome, I’m definitely going to have to try the braised fish recipe. Hope you guys have a great day!😁

I love Korean food and its culture and beautiful way of life❤
I'm watching this at 11pm and I'm already in my bed. Now I'm craving for some fish.
Instant subscription 👍
I finally got to watch this video. From where I am, we eat rice and fish curry on a daily basis ^_^ So this was a good recipe for me and I KNOW it's gonna taste GOOOOOOD!
U were hilarious with the plating! But inliked that u kept it real!
pro-tip! i made a lot of braised fish during my time in korea (saury, mackerel, etc) and if you add some good ripe kimchi and onions on top of the radish under the fish, you'll get some bomb 김치생선조림 ^^
I've never seen mackerel even sold in my supermarket, only typically salmon and tuna. But this looks really good, hopefully I"ll be able to make it soon!

Yes, I don't see it too often at large Western supermarkets. But I think they'll have it at larger Asian SuperMarkets (Depending on where you live!)

I see if fairly frequently at my local supermarket, and I live in Kentucky. It's usually sold frozen, not fresh.
Made this and it's soooo yummyyyy!!! :D
Yes! Theres just something abt seared(?) korean makarel! Its so goood
I just soaked/cooked and ate Mackerel by your recipe, it’s 09:00 here in USA, Tennessee, actually ate this for breakfast with Pa Kimchi, pickled Korean radish, rice and radish Kimchi. I made two nice heads of Kimchi yesterday, put it in the refrigerator about an hour ago to slow the fermentation a bit. Thank you for sharing your recipe, the fish was great.
I’m making the braised mackerel today!!!!!
Ilove this
I love it with kimchi too in the stew mmmmm❤
Great video
Also have to have kim chi!! My favorite brand is one that's locally made, when you open the jar, it pops out a bit and it's fizzy! Carbonated kim chi for the win!
💖 this... simple but tasty
Its very delicious🤤🤤
This is making me so hungry... why am I watching this at 1:30am? 😅
Wow! Yummy yummy👍👍❤
Cool learned a new method to cook this fish! I normally use one of those gas stove top korean grills to grill my mackerel but the only thing I use is kosher salt on both sides. I grill the fish about 6-8 per side then serve with some grated daikon & soy sauce. I'll have to try your method next time. Downside of my method? Fishy smell everywhere but I found rubbing a piece of daikon over the grill seems to get rid of it or even an onion works.
That rice water rinse! Thanks for that!!!
I LOVE MACKEREL! Here in the U.K. it's most commonly hot smoked and used cold in salads or my favourite comfort food is the tinned fillets in tomato sauce on hot toast. Yum. I am SO trying these recipes!

@@FutureNeighbor Well when you do, come to Wales! Cockles and oysters and sea trout and mackerel are specialities here!
That dish not ugly at all. Looks yummy.
Can't wait to try this ! Also which flour do you use ?
Everything looks delicious! Is there another popular fish used in Korean cooking?
Love it😋😍😋😍😋😍
I subbed the moment you were like who am I kidding no one would eat the dish looking like that lol
Look so yummy
You're using a butane stove this video .... I got an Iwatani butane stove and it's a life-changer. I love the thing.
This looks so yummy. Where I'm from we soak out fish and meats in water flour and salt to get the freshy smell and taste. You could also use any sort of citrus as well. We never cook out meat or fish with our soaking it

My mom actually takes the flour, salt, turmeric, lemon and water and massages it almost like doing laundry to get rid of all the blood and impurities as well as the smell 😂
This hits me hard. My ultimate comfort food.
If you wanna get something like honey or mayo in a container to the opening instead of the bottom you can put it in a plastic bag with the tip facing away and spin it around!

It sounds like a good way to break some ceiling lights 🙃
One of my faves too 😁
I like to save the kelp from stocks and broths- make banchan with it. Toss it in brown rice vinegar, gochukkaru, a lil soy and garlic. ☺️ No food goes to waste.
Makerek tastes good I like it and I may have fine this time and gave tice with it I like rice and shrimp tebpuyrea
I love this dish. What brand of white flour do you use?
Mackerel reminds me of my dad. We ate it smoked and with bread 😍
