Konstantin Samoilov - Russia has Been Hit by a Perfect Winter Storm that may Affect War's Outcome.

Russia has been hit be a perfect storm, that may affect the outcome of the war. Crumbling infrastructure combined with a cold winter. Strikes on strategic military energy infrastructure by Ukraine, and growing war fatigue among the domestic population. The move to a war economy, rampant inflation, and a growing deficit of some staple goods.

    I am from Germany. Yes, German enginering companies made a fortune in Russia. Think this was one reason why the government hesitated so long sending weapons to Ukraine at the start of the war. The other reason was cheap natural gas, and about 60% of all german households depend on natural gas. My bill is now 200€ per month. So we take a high price for supporting Ukraine. But I would rather freeze to death that seeing Putin win this war.

    What is kind of upsetting to me, is that the land that belongs to Russia has so much potential. There could be a massive tourist industry in Russia. But people are afraid to go there. Yes. It's a tragedy above and beyond what's happening in Ukraine. If Russia hadn't been ruled by a bunch of cleptocratic oligarchs, ever since the fall of the USSR, it could have become an amazing country. If all that money from natural resources had been used to build infrastructure and schools and a good healthcare system and such...they might have become a country, others would have wanted to join, even. They could have formed their own successful, prosperous 'Eastern European Union'. Instead they're now involved in an unending seeming war, that eats up all their money and kills or drives away their young men, they've lost wealthy, reliable business partners and instead have to deal with countries, that are just waiting to f*** them over. You couldn't think this shit up, if you tried 😏

    Btw, Finland also has central heating in for example Helsinki, and it's extremely reliable, cheap and effective. I've had it in every apartment I've had. Here it's a great system that Just Works without people ever needing to think about it. Russia has problems with central heating because it's Russia, not because it's central heating.

    Do you mind me asking few questions? How cold can it normally gets in Finland in the winter and how long is the cold season when people need to turn on their heaters? And what are cold period fuel bill for regular apartment like two/tree bedroom apartment? Also how often are there individual heating systems instead of central heating system?

  • @ristoravela652

    @ristoravela652

    4 ай бұрын

    @@AtriadGamasekav With central heating, you don't pay for heating separately. The owner of the apartment pays a monthly lump sum that covers their share of not just heating but all the various utilities/maintenance needed for the upkeep of the whole house, but that number is also a fixed monthly number, it doesn't change seasonally. Your share is defined by the size of your apartment, and the "heating costs" are spread out equally over the whole year, so you pay the same amount all year round. (If the owner rents the apartment out, then obviously that gets added to the rent.) I could tell you how much it is for my apartment now, but it wouldn't be very useful because there's special circumstances which make it not a comparable number... And generally I think most people don't think about how much the heating costs, unless they're more actively involved in the upkeep of the house. (You can always ask if your curious.) Heating is not really something you need to think about at all here, if you have central heating. We don't "turn the heat on". There's always heat when you need it. You can notice a bit of variety at times, so I think there's something done seasonally... somewhere, but I'm not even sure where. "Turning the heat on" (or off) is something I have literally never thought about in my life. There's heat. It always works, you never really think about it. It's great.

    District heating in itself is not a problem. In fact, when used as part of combined heat and power generation (CHP), it is very efficient and widely used throughout continental Europe. Of course, the infrastructure needs to be properly designed and maintained, and this is not the case in Russia for many things, not just district heating. Otherwise, I like your guest. Jonathan, great interview. Every show I watch I'm simply awed by the way you ask highly intelligent questions in very easily understandable ways that frames the issue so well that allows the person you are interviewing to complete a perfect analysis of very complex issues and making them simple. That's an incredible skill as you make it seem so easy and casual when I can appreciate the amount of research and rational thought you put into creating your questions. Metaphorically akin to framing questions like windows in the wall of my barn allowing your listeners to see outside their walls of not knowing (ignorance) about issues and often cultural complexities usually distant from the ordinary citizen in far away places. You should be teaching your method, as there are so few people who have reached your level. they could improve on their mastery of journalism. I learn so much from your interviews. Being an old farmer caring for sheep and goats I appreciate the intellectual stimulus your program provides me. Cheers mate just to show I'm Australian. As a land use planner that worked in the public and private land development, the shorting of support infrastructure happened here (still does in some states). Getting something approved by bribe or influence are rare and often caught. Since bribes are expected and worked into the budget, the developers in Russia use the utility infrastructre budget to be sure their approvals happen. I was working for a major US engineering firm when St Petersburg council asked to have the international airport redesigned and then rebuilt. Great contract, right? The PLANNED (in writing) bribes ended up being 50% of the overall cost. Millions. The US company walked away and ate the preliminary study costs.,

    A very very good example that shows a slice of reality in Russia's economy - state sponsored corruption! 40 years ago when the Soviet Union collapsed the men who were intermediate leaders in society needed to grab hold of the remnants, consult with democratic sponsors and draft a civilized document that would spell out how future budgets and projects would be executed. Beneath the rubble of the collapsed Soviet were the seeds of despotism that actually were protected, nurtured and thrived into the worse regime that we see today under this 1.5m Freddie Kruger in the Kremlin!

    Centeal heating like this is widespread in Denmark also, but very efficient and we have thermostats, intelligent control in every house. Also my local plant switched from gas to biomass (wood and straw from agriculture) and solar. So in principle its 100% CO2-neutral.

    @@SiliconCurtainthis is actually not an uncommon system in continental Europe. The correct name is actually district heating, central heating is when you have one big, say, oil burner for one big apartment block or a skyscraper. District heating heats many houses / apartment blocks. In Europe it's typically coupled with a waste incineration facility so the heat used to burn the trash doesn't go to waste but instead heats lots of homes. Super efficient! And way less pollution because filters at big facilities are 10x better than on small oil or gas burners like those used in homes. Austria has that as well, about 50% of the households in Vienna get their heat and warm water with this system. Fernwärme Wien (the district heating company) made some changes in 2022 so they could use oil instead of gas to incinerate the trash. Because it's easier to buy oil on the global market than gas. Austria has no seaports where we could have quickly set up LNG terminals like Germany did. We had to try and drive down our gas usage as best we could.

  • @TheFeldhamster

    Oh and of course we have thermostats and can regulate the heat even with district heating. I could turn on the heat in the middle of summer if I wanted as well. If done right and maintained well, district heating is a great system! As far as I know, these systems are actually on the rise in many European cities.

    I agree, district heating is a better word. The direct translation from the danish term "fjernvarme" would be "remote heating" which sounds a bit funny I suppose 😊 but yes, with well insulated houses, and pipes 8 feet in the ground it is extremely reliable. And the provider is a Coop, basically a nonprofit owned by consumers, so cheaper than most other options.

    Just a note on central heating: If it is properly maintained and distances are not too big it is more efficient than distributed heating. A single large boiler can be run more efficiently than lots of small ones especially if waste heat from other industries or geothermal can be used. This approach is used in many countries not only Russia (Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Germany, to name a few)

    Mr. Fink wonders why Russia doesn't seem to be devoting the same destructive attention to Ukrainian infrastructure this winter, as it did last one. The Russians likely perceive this approach has reached the point of diminishing returns of such strikes, because of greater Ukrainian resilience and preparedness (as noted), but also improving Ukrainian air defense. And there might be yet another reason. Perhaps the Kremlin realizes that Russia's own central heating plants and power stations would be a fairly soft target for Ukrainian saboteurs and long-range drones, if they were provoked into that sort of strategy.

    Konstantin is doing us a great service giving news about Inside Russia!! Thanks for this video Jonathan. The great Russian poet Anna Akhmatova decided to stay in Russia and document the atrocities in the 1920s-1940s. As a preface to her poem Requiem, she writes, ''During the frightening years of the Yezhov terror, I spent seventeen months waiting in prison queues in Leningrad. One day, somehow, someone 'picked me out'. On that occasion there was a woman standing behind me, her lips blue with cold, who, of course, had never in her life heard my name. Jolted out of the torpor characteristic of all of us, she said into my ear (everyone whispered there) - 'Could one ever describe this?' And I answered - 'I can.' It was then that something like a smile slid across what had previously been just a face." Once again I think, Russians are speaking in whispers...
