Kobo Glo HD vs Amazon Kindle Voyage

The brand new Kobo Glo HD has much in common with the Kindle Voyage. They both have 300 PPI and insane resolution. Today, we compare the two head to head.

Kindle doesn't support open formats, which is a big downside for me. Also, I like the fact that Kobo shows the cover of the book you are reading when you turn it off, so the book you are reading can still serve as a conversation-starter, just like a real book. I'm not a fan of Amazon's kiddy alphabet block lockscreen backgrounds. Kobo offers more of the book-like experience, and doesn't restrict your ebooks in the same way Amazon does.

Been a user of kindle since the Kindle 2, amazon irked me with ads, picked up a Kobo Mini a while back and loved the UI, just needed a backlight, switched to Kobo Glo HD (From paperwhite 3) and I really feel I have wasted a lot on kindle in the past. Kobo is a a criminally under rated, under appreciated and worst of all, relatively unknown company compared to amazon in the ereader market amongst the general public. Thanks for doing the videos to bring Kobo to more people.

At 4:10 you criticise Kobo and praise Kindle, based on the time to open up a book. However you've loaded two different books onto the devices. Unbroken, which you put on the Kobo, is over ten times the file size of Playing Nice, which you put on the Kindle. Did you really not notice this, or was it deliberate?

+Gerard Umbert I use the translate feature a lot on my Kindle. Many books have phrases or words in foreign languages (french, spanish, etc.) and it's easy as pie to translate. Not to mention the dictionary is way better on the Kindle. Also, the translation is great for someone who is already fairly well-versed in a language, but not 100% fluent. I guess if you're just reading the generic best selling thriller novels you might not need it often if at all, but if you read classics or books from authors from different countries (whether they are translated to English or originally written in English), the translate feature is amazing.

I'm going with the Kobo Glo HD as my first e-reader. I have tons of EPUB books, and it irks me that I would have to convert them all for reading on a Kindle. The closed Amazon environment turns me off. The only issue I have with Kobo is that, at least in the US, there is only one way to purchase their devices: their website. Kobo really needs to expand its list of retailers in the US market. I guarantee that the Kobo Glo HD would be a huge seller here if it were available in retail stores.

Just a little nitpicking. The Voyage has exactly the same resolution as the Glo HD. 1448X1072. Listed under product specs in the online Voyage user's guide. I've tested this and it's correct. Anyway. Thanks for great informative reviews.

Both great choices, I bought the Voyager when it first came out and I love it but the Kobo Glo HD is a great value. I'd rather see someone serious about reading get either of these rather then trying to read an entire book on their phone or tablet.

I myself have a Kobo Touch and I got to say, Kobo devices are less in your face with trying to sell you stuff. All they have is the Recommendations Page on the front, whilst the Kindle on the front page has a section (that takes up about a third of the page) of telling books. Then there is also that ad at the bottom "300+ books for under £100!" or whatever it reads. It's just plain annoying. AND you spend like twice the money for your device!

Thanks for the comparison between these two very comparable ereaders. Nice to see the Voyage up against a worthy opponent. I would like to see the longevity of both... If they had put an sd card in the kobo, it would've been a slam dunk...even if the price went up a bit. If my paperwhite craps out any time soon...I would be very tempted to switch over....due to the restrictions of a mobi only device. Maybe not...I do love my kindle.... ;-) A good android device that I can afford would cause me to say goodbye though. Love your videos and news updates...keep it up gentlemen.

So, if they are so similar, the availability of titles becomes important. Kindle locks you into their format, but does have a large collection of good titles. 1 - Is it possible to read Kindle books on a Kobo and vice-versa. If there are no work-arounds to covert. Which has the largest (and best) library? 2 - Which of these two models can you handle with one hand (hold and page-flip)? Thanks for the feedback, in advance! You did not mention that the Voyage is a better built device; the Voyage has a micro-etched glass screen and a metal housing. And I think the screen gives better contrast and less glare. I like the page buttons and the X-ray feature. I am older and my eyes are not what they use to be, so I want the best screen I can get. I can afford a Voyage. However - I can see where a lot of folks with goods eyes would say the Voyage is not worth it. The Kobo is a great alternative, as is the newly released Kindle Paper White.

I wouldn't bother with pdf on an e-reader. It is way too clunky, and you regularly need to zoom in to the point where you will need to be scrolling all over the place to read the off screen text. Also file sizes can be huge. I'd rather the e-reader companies do away with their paranoia that allowing multi-format cross compatibility (epub, mobi, ibooks, etc) will discourage people from exclusively buying from their respective stores. Have Amazon and other stores considered that if they all agree to allow use of each others formats, perhaps the loss of business due to people shopping elsewhere will be countered by new customers who would otherwise be purchasing elsewhere? They could still make purchasing books more convenient through their own store via wifi, just allow the reader to accept other formats by transfer from your computer without the need to convert. If a tablet can do it there should be no bias. I probably would have bought a Kindle a long time ago if it had epub compatibility.

Calls the kobo "mid range ebook" because it does not have gimmicks (translations? yeah, many people read in other languages and need translations... oh wait! if i'm reading in another language, means that i already know that language...), yet, kobo, it's the ONLY brand that lets the user actually personalize how they want to read a book... Or your homescreen... Instead of using stupid presets that never let you get what you want from it. Lets just face it. Any kobo or BQ reader is 10 times better than any kindle.
