Kobo Glo HD vs Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 3

These two e-readers came out in 2015 and more or less have the same hardware underneath the hood. Today, we take a look at the Kobo Glo HD and Kindle Paperwhite 3.
We look at such things as the overall e-reading experience, PDF files, how their front-lit displays work in complete darkness

I use a Kobo Glo, but now I'm looking to upgrade my device and I'm choosing the Paperwhite 3. My main reasons are: - better customer service - goodreads integration - x-ray (I search a lot names of characters and in the kobo is frustrating since it shows only 100 results or so - that's low when searching MCs) - searching a word in general is better on the kindle (it was when I used a kindle 4) - easier to highlight (I used to highlight a lot, but in the kobo is irritating so I gave it up - and that's from someone who highlighted on a kindle 4!!) - better dictionary - better store in general and especially when using the ereader to access it - page flip (sometimes I go to my iPad to open the same book so I can go to another page) - send to kindle (no, pocket is not the same thing) - send a book through email to kindle (so much easier than pu it on dropbox, open the browser on kobo, login, go to the file and download it - which is what I do now - and yes, I'd rather do that than transfer through cable) - kindle unlimited (I subscribe, but I read on the kindle app on iPad) - some authors sell their books only on amazon (I like to read indie authors, a lot of them only sell on amazon so I buy their books and have to convert them to epub, put it on dropbox etc) Btw I do like Kobo and I think they have some qualities that are better than amazon, but when adding everything I think Kindle is a better product for me. Thank you for the videos guys.

+Raquel Silva When do you just read the books on your ereader? All that other stuff is really just a collection of distractions from the main function which is to read. The Kobo's ability to use Pocket is a brilliant thing in that it lets you read long articles without eye strain and without the clutter that is on a web page. That is a function worth having because it doesn't get in the way of reading, which is what an ereader is for.

+MrToryhere The dictionary, x-ray, translation, search, highlight, etc are all super great on the Kindle in comparison to other e-readers.. they may not matter to you personally, but they do matter to quite a few people. Personally, the translation and dictionary of the Kindle are fantastic and it always sucks when I'm using/used a different brand that wasn't up to par. And these things are not just "distractions". Kindle Unlimited and the indie author points are super valid, too. Again, not mere "distractions" there either. I also prefer the physical design of the Kindles over the Kobos, too.

+Christina M Fair enough. However, I have found the definition facility on my Kobo perfectly adequate. I have the Kobo Aura 6" which is the best form ereader I've used, because it has no bevel around the edge of the screen. For some unknow reason, Kobo hasn't persisted with that design., which is very odd.

+Raquel Silva I don΄t have neither Kindle nor Kobo. I just want to buy one but I don΄t know which. Since you probably have both could you answear me a couple of questions? 1) I understand that there are dictionaries and translations both in Kobo and Kindle, but what is the best? And must the wifi be open when you΄re using the dictionary/translation or it works offline? 2)My most files are currently in epub format. I know that Kobo supporsts epub, while Kindle supports Mobi. So should I buy a Kobo based on the fact that most of the files are in epub, or it΄s easy to convert my epub files to Mobi and then transfer them to a Kindle? Will it make any difference to the reading experience? Does it worth it? Thank you for your time reading this!

I bought a kindle paperwhite 3 for my fiancé on her birthday and I'm in love with it. Kobo seems alright, but us both being students majoring in the same subject it's awesome how you can highlight, take notes, get definitions (trust me, in medicine this is a really neat thing) etc. and keep all your studying material (pdf) on the same device while still managing all these functions (and being able to share it). Also, when you just want to read a book for your own pleasure, being out in the sun by the beach without having the incredibly annoying reflection on the screen just makes it so worthwhile. I've never physically seen a Kobo but honestly, from what I see in this video, the price difference could be a lot bigger and I'd still go for the Kindle every day of the week. This obviously comes down to what you use it for but a Kindle seems a lot more practical and I'm very happy with the choice I made.

Seeing/reading this and many other reviews, I was totally sold on glo hd and ready to send back my PW3 within the first 30 days of purchase (currently going promotion), and buying the glo hd maybe from amazon itself because of their customer support. Well, reading about Kobo customer service's quality, I was completely convinced to get back on my steps. I'm staying with PW3. Don't want to own a device with a slightly better screen and slightly smaller frame, and slightly opener system (and no special offers on screensaver) but that will leave me totally stranded in case of problems of whatever reason because the producer doesn't honor its warranty.

I have used my friend's Kobo Glo HD, I have to say that it's really awesome, but the bezel is so so easy to be scratched, but with the cover, it is better. But buying a Kobo in my country is so difficult, I have to find several months to find a "like new" one and try to ask my friend to sell his one but he said no. Consequently, I think I should purchase a PPW 2017 for my demand. Thanks, guys, the review is really good and detailed.

I'm a heavy reader, I had the kobo glow and if there is one and only default it's the speed and it's just unforgivable. The heavier the ebook not even a pdf, just an epub, it stop goes back to the previous page instead of the next one... And just sometimes waiting a good 6 seconds to turn the page is unsurferable. Again it does that mostly with large books (over 500 pages or so) so it becomes really difficult to finish them. I can pass on any light, definition, display settings, but speed. Never again

Got a Glo HD last week. The killer feature for me was Pocket service integration. Mine might be different than reviewed, as the LED indicator light is under the button on the top, not on the bottom near the USB. That's a pin reset switch.

What are the translation capabilities of the Kobo Glo HD? My first language is not english, so I would like to translate any word that I don΄t understand. Is it easy in Kobo or it lags? Does the Kobo Glo HD offer easy translation from English to (for example) Greek, my first language? And must I have a wifi connection to do the translation or not?

Something not discussed in the comparison is the durability of the e-reader and the service. To get a handle on that read some of the many many complaints about the kobo glow HD. Overall they appear to have a far worse track record then kindles with far more problems, and forget it if you need service. You will get someone from India, and essentially get the run around until you give up. Saving a few dollars now doesn't do a lot of good if a year from now you have to buy a replacement.

Thanks for the comment MrToryhere. I've purchased a Kindle maybe a few weeks after the comment I made in January. Whilst I don't like anticompetitive practises that companies like Amazon employ, their product married with the ecosystem is amazing. I'm really enjoying the integration with Goodreads, the reccomendations from the Amazon store and X-Ray. Maybe next time I'll go back to Kobo!

Nice video. Question: How is Kobo's quality control? Are they pretty consistent? I've always wanted a Kobo because I personally think they are superior to Kindles i.e. expansion SD, larger devices, customization, etc (from a purely physical e-reader standpoint). However, considering that Amazon's quality control is bad, I say bad because they are not consistent with their e-readers. For example, if you purchase three Paperwhites you will get three different screen tone variations that will not be exactly the same (I just went through this) I know it wouldn't be as easy exchanging a Kobo which is why I ask, thanks...

Goodereader Having dealt with a lost (mislabeled on their end) package and then a quickly broken screen -- Kobo Customer Support is absolutely awful. They bury their phone support line (which only directs you to email them instead) and take DAYS to respond inefficiently to your emails. Language difficulties, lack of understanding and NO replacement options. I researched my reader for months when I first chose my Kobo Aura. I'm jumping ship for this new Paperwhite, which is saying a lot!

Hey guys - this is a great video and I'm a big fan of the comparison, HOWEVER - I feel like when you're comparing e-readers like this head to head, other than matching fonts/font sizes, you should match the text alignment as well - the Kindle's is justified while the Kobo's is aligned right (which is honestly an eye-sore to me because I always read with justified text hahaha). But other than that little nitpicking - great job. I'm interested in Getting a Kobo Glo HD, so I think I'll go with that (or should I wait a few months to see if something better comes out? :) )

Hmm.... the only thing that is stopping me from buying the Kobo Glo HD is the fact that it won't sync sideloaded ebooks across apps/ereaders or store them on the Kobo Cloud... whereas on the Kindle both cases are possible.

What about showing nightmode, or reverse screen, which is how I prefer to read much of the time? Also, there was a german 'game-changing' ereader that was supposed to have come out some years ago, but it was constantly delayed, and then...nothing. It just disappeared. Do you know anything about that? Among other things, it promised a very large format for viewing magazines and newspapers.

Hi, I'm new in this e-book reader world, so I'm still considering what reader to buy. I have a lot of books in pdf and mobi formats on my hdd so I was wondering if: -do these support mobi -how long their batteries last -can I just load these books from my pc to reader via usb cable -can I load fonts from my pc to kindle -do these propery show letters like š, đ, ž, ć, č (croatian alphabet) Which one of these would you recommend to the new guy. I don't need any of these companies' online services. I just plan to read books I find online (on my pc). And I want battery to last at least until I read one book. Don't want to charge it every (other) day.

+Youssouf Koulamallah There is program called Calibre which is a great ebook library and can convert ebooks into different formats. Some Kindle books are protected and Calibre won't convert them to the epub format used by the Kobo, but I suspect that Calibre will work out a way to overcome this problem.

Don't buy Kobo. just look around what i am talking. The customer service of kobo is terrible. So if you have any problem with your ereader they do nothing...(limited warranty) That is really embarassing.. It is really strange for me, because I really loved Glo HD, but it is with bad customer service, not worth it. So I don't recommend them. Amazon, as company is bigger and better. The fame is important yet for them.
