The ebook format is very important when choosing a reader. Kindle ebooks are in the Amazon proprietary .azw format and ebooks are available ONLY from Amazon. The basic Kobo format is epub, a standard widely used by many ebook sources. I believe each reader will read PDF, but the reading experience is compromised, so it's useful only when no other format is available.

Exactly what I was looking for! Easy to use and easy to read. My eyes are sensitive to light and the off white and light of the kindle are very soft, very confortable when you want to read for hours! I love it!

If you happen to read books using Calibre, you can deliberately modify the settings so that it will generate epub files for you that make better use of the screen space on a Kobo (including getting rid of the excess line between paragraphs). I learned how to do it from a blog entry called "Kobo Formatting Tip: Minimizing Wasted Space" It's a balance between easy on the eyes and making the most of the space, so you can adjust to your personal preferences.

I had the kobo glo but just took it back and ordered the kindle paperwhite. I got tired of the blue tinge to the light and not being able to read in the dark that long

Kindle seems a bit better but they lock you into Amazon file format which isn't a huge issue if you know how to convert the files from say ePub or Mobi to Kindle format. But that can be a pain in the butt sometimes. So unless Amazon comes up with a more open standard approach to downloading book format, I'll stick with Kobo. BTW, regarding the wasted space on bottom and top, real books waste a lot of space too, so I guess that's just a personal preference whether it's liked or not.

I bought a Kobo Glo a year ago and now I can conclude that it was not worth the money. The screen froze quite often especially while recharging and I had to wait days before being able to use it again. Reboots were usless in such situations, I got no response from the device. The device was sent for repairing once and replaced with a new one during the warranty period but I got another with the same identical problems. A couple of days ago it froze again while I was in the middle of an interesting reading and now I can't bring it back to life in any way. Definitely disappointed, for the moment I'm going to opt for real paper, in the future I will evaulate whether to buy a Kindle (my bro owns one, defintely a better choice).

Ebook format not that much of an issue as i use Calibre as an ebook library on my pc and that can convert format so reader is 100% personal choice based on taste and cost. At moment on Kobo Touch, but have had Sony before and still buy loads Kindle format books from amazon.

in addition to the performance you also have to consider the customer service with each company. I recently had to take up an issue with Kobo and the service is horrible. I'm almost sure Kindle is better because you can't get worse than Kobo

I don't agree that the kobo is cheaply made. I love mine. More freedom than kindle. Definitely not cheap though.

wow this guy really cares about the backlight. I honestly wouldn't find 3 minutes worth of backlight-related material to talk about if I reviewed these two products. And I have found kindle has excellence service. If someone says kobo has horrible service, then that should create a stark enough contrast for you. Get a kindle.
