We all at some point of time may have had to go through one or more of the imaging tests like X ray, MRI or a CT scan to ascertain an illness. While these tests do sound important to us, however, it may still leave us in a state of dilemma whether to go for it or not. This is because we may have some myths around these tests that may cast a shadow and hinder decision-making.

X-ray
An X-ray is a quick and painless test used to examine many parts of the body - particularly your bones, chest and abdomen. Some types of X-rays introduce a contrast medium such as barium into your body to provide more clarity of the images.
How you prepare
While different types of X-rays need different preparations, in general, you need to expose the bodily portion that needs to be examined. Make sure to speak with your doctor or nurse so they can give you detailed instructions.
Depending on the region being X-rayed during the examination, you might need to wear a gown. You could also be asked to take off your jewellery, eyeglasses, and any metal objects that might be seen on an X-ray
For contrast studies, you are given a liquid such as barium called as contrast medium that help outline a specific area of your body on the X-ray image. You may either have to swallow the contrast medium or receive it as an enema or an injection.
Risks
Some people fear that X-rays are not safe because exposure to radiation may bring about cell mutations that may lead to cancer. However, it is important to know the fact that radiation exposure from an X-ray is low and the benefits offered by these tests far outweigh the risks.
Furthermore, the tissue or organ being examined during an X-ray determines the amount of radiation you are exposed to. Also, age affects your susceptibility to radiation, with children being more vulnerable than adults.
However, you need to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or suspect a pregnancy. While the risk of diagnostic X-rays to an unborn child is minimal, your doctor may ask to go for another imaging test like an ultrasound.
After the X-ray you may often continue with your routine activities. Normal X-rays often have no negative side effects. However, if you have had a contrast medium injection before your X-rays, drink a lot of water to assist your body flush it out. Do make sure to contact your doctor if you have pain, redness or swelling at the injection site.
