Want to give knitCompanion a try? Visit the app store on your device, and search for "knitCompanion" (one word). You can download the free version, which is awesome, and give it at try!
You can see all of the videos in my knitCompanion series (more coming!) here:
• KnitCompanion Videos
This video was shot at my home, and produced at edited by Tiny Courage. In keeping with social distancing rules, I'm not currently shooting videos at the studio. We still expect to release a new knitting video every week, they just look a little different!
In the video, I refer to stitches in the chart as KFBs, they are actually K2togs. :)
The scarf on the mannequin is Escalator Wrap (not my design), more info here:

On behalf of of all slightly tech challenged knitters, thank you. You have opened up this app in a way that made me upgrade to the full version. Stitch Companion has found a great spokesperson in you.
I audibly gasped several times watching this to the point where my husband asked if everything was ok 😂 Wow wow wow!!!! Thank you for making this video. Now to go knit with knit companion!
I’ve had Knit Companion for about 18 months. I’ve watched the tutorials, but you have really opened my horizons with your tutorials , Staci! This one was ALL new information to me, and I already thought I couldn’t love the app more! Thank you, thank you! Can’t wait for the next one!
Nice job! Only 1 more video? 🤣🤣. You can not possibly cover this fabulous program in only 1 more video. I have been using it for about 5 years or so, and constantly have to watch and rewatch KC University tutorials. You explain it in clear manner, and how you show what to tap makes it easy to understand. I am confident you are making this easier for multitudes of knitters. 👍
Wow! You’ve made the power of Knit Companion so clear! Thank You!
You do the best tutorials ever! Thank you so much.
Love your KC videos! SO much easier to understand! Thank you! ❤️
WOW!! Customizing the color of stitches for stranded work is amazing!!
Mind Blown! You are helping me utilize this app so much more than I was. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I learn every time you add a video & you never disappoint! I’m only comfortable knitting with knitCompanion by my side since you introduced it to me on your podcast. Thank you! Thank you!
So informative! So many tools to use in the program. I will have to watch again to figure out all the cool things.
Staci you do a tremendous job explaining how to use these features. I would never have figured this out on my own. Thank YOU!!!!
Knit Companion is awesome. I've been using it for a couple of years now. I will never go back to paper!!
Thanks to you, I am starting my first pattern with Knit Companion. It looks so awesome, and I can’t wait to really get into it and try the different functions. Thanks for the tutorials!
Your tutorials are great. Even though I've been using KC for a while now - I hadn't noticed the "magic wand" for getting the chart set up! Thank you.
Just purchased the knitCompanion for my iPad. You are 100% right - this is a game changer. I’ve already imported a ton of my patterns, and with the highlight bar I may never need to pull out a row counter again for blankets, wraps, etc. Such a great tool. Now, back to knitting!
My knitting group advised me to get with knitCompanion! I'm so glad I did. Thank you for providing such professional work.
Awesome. I have an iPad, fabulous. I’m so excited to get the Knit Companion software. Thank you. You instruction is great. I saved it for further repeat studying.
OH.MY.WORD! This is really amazing. I just ordered all of the yarn in the whole world and will be knitting all the things for all the people. Thank you for this tutorial.
Extremely helpful especially having a custom stitch count so you don’t have to count each little square love it I have had knit companion along time and did not understand that feature until your video
This was great! The magic marker feature is fabulous and the inversion thingy and the voice option. I have an old iPad that will not upgrade to the latest iOS. This is perfect excuse for upgrading.
Thank you so much! Please put out more KC videos! Linked counters explanation perhaps, plus everything else!!! Your videos are SO easy to understand.
Staci, this is fabulous!!! Thank you!
Thank you for showing this tutorial. I have just started knitting a pair of charted mittens using knit companion, but now its going to be so much easier and fun when using charts. I hope you will continue to have many, many more videos using this app. Learning by watching is so much easier than reading an instruction booklet.
Love, love, love KnitCompanion! Thank you for this video!!! I’m hoping that it answers some of the questions I’ve had about markers and repeats. While I have had the app for about a year and use it almost daily, there are still things that confuse me. I find it invaluable for shawls. I ‘m knitting a shawl with multiple charts in each of its short rows and, while others had problems keeping track of everything, KnitCompanion has made it relatively easy for me. Thanks again, Staci, for all your teaching videos.
This is amazing. I learned so much more about KC!
I have been using knit companion almost since it came out but have not ventured into magic markers because it seemed so complicated. I have used the tutorials but you put more than one lesson into a tutorial and it all seems to make it so much easier. So glad that you have decided to make these videos. I will be using them instead of the tutorials. THANK YOU!!
That’s a knitter’s toy, your having lots of fun, but it would definitely be handy, at a glance you know what is coming up. Your dog is so cute.
Holy Cow Stacy. I just downloaded Knit Companion and have been using the basics. After watching your second video, I purchased the app for the year. I am doing a KAL and was thrilled to learn how to combine all of the pages into 1 pattern. I have also chosen not to do cables because I would get lost searching for the legend to know what I needed to be doing. KC will allow me to do more intricate patterns and cable designs.
Thank You so much for expaining that so well. I am also loving this softwear.
Thank you so much. Couldn't have figured this out without you!
Thanks! So much to learn. I have bad eye sight and think this will be a help. Between enlarging and coloring, should help a lot! I sure don’t want to give up my knitting!
I love your enthusiasm for this App. And, thank you for so much information and how to use it! So great!
This is incredible! Thank you for the awesome tutorial ❤️
I've been using the unpaid version and today purchased the customised version and watched your video which just blew my mind how good this software is and how well you demonstrated it.Wow!
Great video. As a newbie to KC I’m loving what it can do.
Thank you soooo much for this! I've just taken out a subscription and your videos are so helpful - thank you again!
Thank you SO MUCH! I was looking for something else and found you have videos for knit companion. I am such a visual learner and also glad I have apple. ❤😊
Thank you for this tutorial! It has helped me deepen my understanding of this program and how to use charts while knitting. Also, thank you for making captions and options on your videos. As a hearing impaired person, they are so helpful!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I love this product.
Thank you for these amazing easy to follow tutorials. I love this software!
I’m convinced. I am writing a pattern from a photo of a vintage sweater set. This App will be helpful. Love the voice feature. I prefer the inverted bar, I think. I will have to try it.
This looks amazing! Wish I could afford one! Thanks for showing us!
Ty soooo much for these videos. It looks like it is a knitter or crocheter must have tool!
Yes, I like the features for the charts. I used highlight markers, and red pen for the number of stitches. Only problem I'm an android user. 😞 Thanks for the video. Always enjoy your videos and the world of great information. 👍🏼👏🏼
I’ve been using Knit companion quite a while but am picking up tips from these videos so thank you! I really hope your next video will be discussing setting up increases or decreases (ie sleeves). I also will toggle off the stitch marker, the blue line, especially when doing charts.
I have the Knit Companion but it is on an Android table, so now I know what to ask for Mother's Day, Birthday or Christmas an apple, a girl can have dreams. Thank you for the tutorials they are awesome. Stay Healthy
Thank you so much for this video! I refer back to it all the time! :)
Thanks for your videos. Can't wait to see how you use the LINKED counters. They are just the best thing. KC changed my knitting life! I do use the Android version and it's too bad we can't get all the special features, but what is in the paid version is just awesome. Best new app to come along in ages.
I just started using it and your right game changer for sure. Thank you I really love this app..🥇🏆
Love love this app!! Had it for several months and I love it. So nice not to have to keep up with printed patterns. Got it when I saw your video months ago. Just wanted say thanks for sharing this :). Take care
I have this app and I love it. Thank you for information. Be safe happy knitting 🧶.
Thank you! I've been a long-time knitCompanion fan, but just started an animal print top with looong color sections and couldn't get the magic marker to count the stitches correctly until watching your video. It was so frustrating to know the app could do it for me, but user error had me counting manually. I'm happy to jump back into this project now.
Fantastic! Wish I'd known this last year when I did an all over cable pullover.
Excellent… so clear … I have learned so much ! Thank you
Thanks for the great video. I just wanted to mention that if your pattern is done in gray scale (like the baable hat for instance) it's really important to change the color search to gray when adding the magic marker. I learned this the hard way. :)
I’ve used KP since the original version, a one time cost of $15. I’ve not upgraded to the current version, and I’ve been okay with it. Now I’m convinced I have to to upgrade to this version now. Sigh. Thanks
I learn something new every time you put out a knitCompanion video.
Your enthusiasm is inspiring. I have been trying to tackle an Erica Heusser pattern for months but just have not been able to start. This really will help me manage what is a complex challenge for me. You are the perfect partner for Knit Companion.
This is the video that got me to upgrade!
OMG. I've never been a fan of the highlighter bar because it blurs the row that I'm on. Invert makes it completely worth paying for the software. THANK YOU!
this looks SO useful! thank you!
You are helping me so much, thank you 🥰
Well this answer my question. I asked another video. Darn, that answers my question on weather I should upgrade. I'll upgrade when all the bells and whistles are available for android or I might talk my husband into getting me an I pad. I keep coming up with reasons to buy an I pad. This is added to the list😁
I have been using this on Android since the very first day you introduced it. The features on iOS are amazing! I love the inverted row slide. Currently, I use the highlight feature to chunk the pattern so I can easily see repeats. The ability to have stitches counted, make custom markers, and color-code the chart are all game changers that I don't receive. ☹️ With all the features left out of the Android version, I feel like I was ripped off! I paid the same annual price on Android as iOS for MANY less features! #notahappyknitter
I really NEEEED this app! working on a Berroco pattern with Notability, that would be a perfect to test out with this program....
I'm enjoying your videos from your "home studio".

Thank you! I'm so glad the process is working...but I'll tell ya, it's not easy being on both sides of the camera! But it should get easier with more practice. :)
Thank you!!!! I was searching for the invert function!
Wonderful. You even showed how to use my iPhone for scanning in a different video. Thank you
This looks like an amazing app!!!
This tutorial is so awesome! I was following along with you on my own iPad and it recognized your voice so that when you said "Next", my row marker advanced too LOL. I noticed something interesting when I followed along with the stitch marker segment. The chart I was using had a lot of purl stitches, so I tapped on a purl stitch and KC went about it's business selecting the purl stitches to turn them pink. Only some of the purls turned pink. If I selected another purl stitch to try again, different purls were highlighted. I think the problem is my chart was hand drawn and KC is so particular about choosing the correct stitches that it only highlights the ones it deems to be the closest to the selected one. My chart is very neat and tidy but it's hard for the designer to make a purl dot exactly the same each time. I'm guessing that was the issue. I'm using version 2.9.87 which I think is the most recent paid for version.
Thank you! I had been working with the older KC and found it so useful. But with the new KC, I can't seem to intuit how to do this.
I’m starting this pattern and following this video to set it up. I hate reading charts, so I’m hoping this will help.
Thank you for an excellent tutorial 😁
What a great app. That's one I'll try.
I have the free version on android. I never really understood how to use it, so thank you for the instruction! Now if I only had an iPad 🙂
GAMECHANGER! I just purchased the upgrade! 😁
I love Knit Companion, and use it extensively - Android version. Sorry, I can't afford an I pad.
Love your explanation. Thank you. Have you ever come across a pattern chart that just doesn't work when you are trying to edit it for the magic markers and it just doesn't work? Your explanation is clear and concise so makes me think that it's the pattern. Thank you again.
These are amazing videos..so incredibly helpful! Thank you. I’m new to KnitCompanion, and I’m wondering how to use markers to add more colourwork to a 2 colour chart. Any suggestions for me? Thank you.
When are you going to have the next video on KnitCompanion? Love the program and use it daily with all my patterns. Would like them to include Acrobat to get pdf files. Thanks for your wonderful videos.
Great tutorial. thanks.
thanks you you are very clear. in my case the magic makers doesn't fit the box. It is to big it doesn't find al the color in the chart. Do you know why? how to do?
When I am doing a project that has a right and wrong side, the empty squares are knit on the WS and purled on the RS, and the squares with the dots are purled RIGHT side and knit on the wrong side, how can knit companion help me manage that. On a project I am working on now, I just go through each row...thankfully on 6 in the repeat...and color everything red that is knit on either row. Anything that is left uncolored is a purl. Can that sort of thing be accomplished in Knit Companion. I'm guess it can, but I'll have to fiddle with the color markers to get it to work for me. I keep telling myself that this is so easy with colored pencils and paper, but I want to apply the skill to Knit Companion. BTW: Your explanations are spot on, Staci! Well done.
More dog please! (The app looks good too, looking forward to trying it).
Wow! Thank you 🙏
Terrific thanks
This is a game changer, I am working on a pair of socks with a chart and struggling, but not anymore 😊😊
Thank you!
Amazing help, especially for my rusty memory😅
Boy do I want to win this!
hope that they will soon add these features in the android!
I see now that my highlighting is no directly on a chart square, hence my choices cannot be truly read by the program. How do I “size” my highlighting and markers to my particular charts?
Thank you so much! Your videos explain things much better than on the KC site. Will you please explain the difference between “Edit” and “Setup”? Yes, I have the paid upgrade.
@verypinkknits
4 жыл бұрын
I'm sure knitCompanion can explain it...I can just say that some features of the app are in the edit tab, and others are in the setup tab. :)
I just upgraded to Essentials and using the chart set up. I have an android (Samsung) and my KC does not have the sound control option for advancing row counts. Is it perhaps hidden somewhere? Thanks.
I have the upgraded version. Has the knit companion changes how to color code stitches on a chart? When I tap the magic wand I do not get the plus sign at the bottom left corner. Thanks.
The magic markers or custom markers are making me crazy. I have a pattern that is white and black squares. I just does not want to select the piece of black that I want to change in another color. It also does not allow me for the white squares to be marked up. Does it only do patterns with symbols in it? Maddening...
@ very pink knits Is there a way to color in squares on the charts with an IPencil to crochet overlay mosaic tapestry technique please?
How do you widen the row slider in charts? It is not showing the full row when I enlarge the chart but the only thing I see when I hit edit is the row slider?
Hi, I have Knitcompanion now for 1 week and it is fantastic! And then I found your video’s, they are also fantastic and so very helpfull and so easy to follow. But..two steps that I do, they do it only partial…I do it over and over again, then happens the same, but nit what I want. I only speak a little english so I go try to explane. What I want to do is marker in a chart all the purl stitches en then also give them the numbers in it for more then 4 stitches. I followed all your steps…but what it then do on my ipad: first when I tap the stitch, most of the times it colours not exactly the stitch in the chart, the colour goes at one or sometimes two sides outsides the lines/edges of the stitch….I don’t know why, what do I wrong? And then, wenn I marked the stitch and give in the number of countstitches in de purlsstitches, wenn I then tap on magic marker, only the half of the chart the purlstitches are coloured and only in the half of the chart are the rows with the countnumbers in de purlstitches. 😳I hope that you understand what I mean and I hope you can help me further, many thanks!
