I LOVE all of your videos; they are SO informative and extremely helpful! We are on the cusp of size limit to allow for a minimal sized island. We aren't sure if it's worth it to have such a small island and are considering a peninsula instead. Would LOVE your insight on how to make that decision. Are people generally happy with a small island? Would you consider tackling the topic of decision points on small island vs. peninsula? Thanks, again, for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us!

Hi and thanks so much for watching!! The number one reason why people love islands is because of seating, second for the extra counter space. If you can't get the right depth to include seating but you could on a Peninsula, I'd say go Peninsula. Also if you are squeezing in an island and are only left with 36" walk ways, it may be another reason to go Peninsula as it's really not a sufficient walk way space. Think about how many people will be in your kitchen? Is the walk way in front of the refrigerator? (then especially 36" is wayyyyyy to small!!) In the end it's a personal preference but my recommendation is always to be aware of the walk ways. It can feel way to cramped and you could regret it. Maybe try taping off the new layout with blue tape and see how it flows / how you feel about it. Thank you for watching, I'll work on new videos soon :-)

@@thematerialbar Wow! Thanks so much for your response! I calculated based on a 42” walkway (even tho my husband & I SOMEtimes cook together, but usually it’s 1 of us). The walkway is in front of the refrigerator. Using your calculation method, my kitchen is 165” (overall depth) minus 51” (2 counter perimeters-25.5”x2) minus 84” (1 cook walkway clearance on 2 sides-42”x2) = 30” Space Left for Island. That would accommodate your calculation of 26.25” for the Least Depth Possible for Island without seating. I, like others, want more work surface & add’l seating, so I was disappointed that we don’t have the space for seating in this equation. It has been suggested that we could stick seating on the end of the narrow peninsula, but I have a hard time conceptualizing how comfortable that would be (island size 26.5” x 34”/42”/54”/55.5”). Agree that it’s personal preference. Just wondering if those with small islands find it useful or an obstruction. Thanks so much for your expert input & suggestions! Cheers! 😊

You’re doing a such a great job, Kerstin!! I’m watching lots of your videos b/c we are getting ready to do a first floor kitchen renovation. Our kitchen is 12x12 and separates from our living room with a wall we are taking down and opening up to one big room: kitchen/living room. We were planning on doing a 30” by 10’ island that has the sink/dishwasher/trash/drawers in it, with 40” walkway between this island and the wall that has the cooking range/cabinets/fridge; and then 38” walkway on other side of island that separates island from a 12” by 9’ wall pantry cabinet configuration to hold all our pantry items. So the three major sections of the new layout are parallel to each other. I REALLY do not want to do a peninsula. It is very hard to imagine a 30” island but what do you think?

Hi Cherie!! I'm happy you're liking the videos! I just recorded another one today to get released this Friday 🙂 I totally get it and having an island can be a very much different feel than a peninsula. It doesn't sound like you will have seating on this island, so I am not concerned about the walk way or island depth. the 30" island top depth can be sufficient for prepping also because you're island will have a substantial length. Sounds good! I hope all works out !! 🙂

@@thematerialbar Yes I think the points about island size and spacing between the island and work areas are really important. 36" is really not enough space if you have a working aisle and two people cooking in a kitchen.

What is the standard hight for an island please??

@@joyharper4481 36" height same as kitchen cabinets. Having said that, some do go 29" to 20" for a lower section of an island. But personally, I think 36" is best, people seem to like sitting on stools in a kitchen.

I'm adding a kitchen where there's currently a patio, so it's completely new. My island is going to be 98" long x 64" wide. My designer is concerned that it might be too wide, as it will be too difficult to reach the center for cleaning. Is that really a concern?

Hey It's pretty wide but I've done several islands like that if the space allows. But it is pretty wide. Did you try laying it out and and playing with the size?

Do you have any suggestions for placement of lights? We are gutting & rebuilding our kitchen right now, doubling the original size. The island will be approx 10ft x 4ft. We are interested in how many pendant lights? There is a vaulted ceiling above, bay window on one side with a south facing exposure (lots of natural light) and the opposite side has a small kitchen window and a mediums sized window just outside of the kitchen area. Thank you for your thoughts!

Hi Billy! Congrats, that must be exciting! We'll on a standard 8 foot island it's typical to have 2 pendants lights, sometimes even on a 6 foot island. I think pick your light fixture first. You could go one very large chandelier that is more elongated, you could go 2 larger pendants or chandeliers, or you could go 3 medium sized pendants. The actual light fixture you pick will play a role in how many you will want to install. I hope this helps!!

Just noticed my cabinet guy built our island at 35" high while the kitchen countertops at 36". doesnt look terrible but wish i would of caught it before putting on the slab. you ever see islands at the 35" height? good vid

Hi! In Germany where I am from it's encouraged to have different prep / cook heights for your countertop. Sometimes I work with clients where we raise certain areas to 39". In a perfect world I would have made the height difference more intentional with a bigger difference than a 1/2" but I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. Your back will enjoy working 1/2" raised height 🙂I hope everything else turned out just as expected!! Thanks for watching!

Hey Andrea, thanks for watching!! I've done both! I've done and island and the post was at the end of the island or also incorporated it in the peninsula. It's difficult to say without seeing the room but technically either works 🙂

i am in the process of doing everything you are describing but watching your video and listening to was very helpful! Our plan is going rectangle 9 ft by 4 feet. 4 24 inch cabinet on stool side with 2 6 inch wide legs for support. other side sink cabinet in middle. dishwasher spice rack on one side 24+8 otherside pull out drawers for wastebasket and some kind of drawer. We are not doing full remodel just replacing island. Any must have featur other than standard cabinet for efficiency you recommend? paper towel holder cutting board slot. baking pan slot etc.

Hi Josh, thanks for watching and good luck on your project! Something to think about if you have functioning cabinets on the back of your island to use touch latches rather than hardware so nobody hits their knees. I also like to add some sort of sink liner in your sink base cabinet and personally I always add this cleaning supply pull out unit. I just love using it myself 🙂 I hope this helps!!

Great idea in touch latches !! I rewatched (at 2x) around what time did you talk/show pull out and cleaning supply liner ? Is this just as doable with farmhouse/apron style sink?

@@joshgeorge83 Yes! I suggest getting the sink and everything installed (plumbing) and then you can figure out exactly how much room you have to chose the right pull out.

Great video's and information! Thank you. One question; A big box store told me stock base cabinets are not sturdy enough to support a granite or quartz countertop. These are the standard oak cabinets that can be purchased at Lowes, Home Depot, etc. I was then guided to look at custom cabinetry. Is this just a marketing ploy to get me to buy a higher end cabinet?

That was a total marketing ploy....I mean yes there are differences in a box construction but even a 1/2" piece of furniture board sat vertical supported by the box throughout the room will due. That's crazy that they told you this....I mean the 1300 cabinet line is a 1/2" box and it's furniture board, so are a lot of european cabinet manufacturers and they all hold up hard surfaces.

Hi Kerstin, so glad I found your helpful videos! If planning to use a supersize quartz slab for a large island with an extra 'thick' edge, do they cut the perimeter of the slab to create a continuous pattern along the edge (thinking veining) so that you need to subtract those edges from the slab to calculate how large the counter can be? (I guess I'm not sure how that thicker edge is actually made) Hope that makes sense! Thank you :)

Hi and I'm so happy you are liking the videos! So yes, in most cases if you are doing a built up edge it will get mitered in the factory. This means cutting strips of the slab and gluing them in an angle to the top section so you are right for accounting that. I would talk to my local fabricator to discuss the exact sizes to ensure you're island is getting designed for a single slab if you're trying to avoid a seam. Great question!! Your fabricator should be the one then to add a plywood substrate underneath of the top so it's still a flat surface sitting on your cabinets. I hope this helps!!

My husband and I are thinking of building a kitchen island out of a 6 foot sink base, we are going to use butcher block, what size butcher block do I need to have the proper overhang?

Hi friend! Typically on countertops you will have a 1.5" front overhang from the box, a 1" overhang on the sides and anything from 9-15" overhang on the back. I would suggest talking to the wood supplier about the proper overhang on the back and how long you could go without supports.

Question! Should my island be centered with the stove wall behind it? Or is it ok for it to slightly off center. Im struggling with this and still have time to move it. Per my cabinet guy "this is where it should be based on dimensions left/right". When standing in front of kitchen you see island and straight back to range wall. Thank you!

You can go either way. Of course in a perfect world people prefer everything to be perfectly centered but in reality you can't always achieve this and can't get hung up on it. Sometimes function and getting more counter space etc. is the way to go and more important rather than having perfect symmetry. Thanks much for watching!!

The problem is usually going to big and creating walk ways that are too small. If you can go 8 or 9 foot then I see no reason why you couldn't go smaller???? 7 foot is plenty to house a large 36" sink base cabinet and a 24" dishwasher with 3" end panel and I'd sit the remaining 21" cabinet to the opposite side of the sink from the dishwasher. Dear Kerstin, It's been said that a kitchen island should be one tenth or one fifteenth of the whole kitchen area to look propprtioned. My kitchen is 17'x9'5" (161.5 sqft) so, in order to look proportioned, my island should be 16 sqft to 25 sqft. We are a family of 4 and considering 24" per seat, that gives me an 8' wide and I currently have it at 4' depth. (32 sq ft area) I still have my clearance around the island at 36". Would this size look proportioned? (8'x4') or should I consider make it a 6'x4' island instead and only keep 3 seats? Please help! Contractor needs an answer and I am having a hard time making the final decision. Thank you!

I would have said you can customize and go the medium with a 7x4? I really like having larger walk ways and even a 6x4 island is still relatively large for most spaces. how about sink sizes in your island. I am putting in a 157 inch island which I know is not recommended but it perfectly aligns with my wall counter. I was looking at putting in a sink at 39 inches? Is that too big? How do you know what is a good size? I want a large sink and know there is enough room but will it look overwhelming or even the oppositte ? Lost for not being bigger??

Hi Tisha ok so a 36" sink base cabinet is the like the most standard that people do. A sink that will fit that sink base is usually 33" overall length which is the overall size not the inside bowl size. Doing that size is the most common sink size and 99% of people love that size and are happy with it. I believe it will be enough but your island is pretty big so it wouldn't look awkward trying to go bigger on your sink!! Good luck and I hope this helps!!

It doesn’t have to! Especially in a larger island it’s not that big of a deal. I would always go for function over fashion but everyone is different. Some of my clients are more concerned about symmetry and that’s ok too! It’s a personal preference!! If you off set it though have it off set enough so it looks intentional. I like a-symmetry I think it adds interest 😃

I’m planning a 9x5 island with sink(36”) I want DW on the right and trash on the left, if I do that I end up getting 24 inches on one side of the sink and 48inches on the other side, Which is great as it is closer to the fridge and I have more prep area and closer to trash can. By doing this, I can’t center the sink on the island. Please suggest! 💗
