I'll walk you through how I evaluated my family's needs and designed an island to work for us and YOU can do the same. The cabinet clearances, recommendations for Island stools and seating and the measurements you need to get the best design for your kitchen and you! Space planning is kinda my thing.
Whether it's a great flow around stools for seating and entertaining friends and family around your island
or storage and a huge countertop for prep, islands are so easy to customize for your lifestyle, once you know the rules.....then break them wisely!
This isn't about decor, finishes and cabinet styles, the latest countertop material either.
But, it is about the sizes you need to design a great space, simplify shopping for stools, countertop material and sizes. It's the meat and potatoes of what size you can fit in your kitchen, what design would work for you and yours based on evaluation your space and most importantly, your life.
Then we make it pretty!
Welcome to my channel all about designing and building your dream home! Good design goes to Heaven, bad design goes everywhere else.
Help stop the spread!
I've been designing and managing residential and retail interior design projects for over 25 years, well over.... I've also designed and built my own homes, and I'm knee deep in renovations as we speak, so I know what it's like to be on the other side of the table from the "experts" when planning to build or renovate a home.
The secret to good design is knowledge and I got some that can help you design better, create cohesive plans for saving time and staying on budget. All, while getting those custom details that make your house special and unique for you and your family.

My husband decided on a rolling island that he could use for additional food prep space in our open concept kitchen/dining/living room. He can position the island to face the living room TV (which swivels) and watch TV and prep. The island was originally 32" tall, 18" wide and 36" long. He added blocks between the base and the castors and got a larger butcherblock top for it. It ended up being 36" tall 24" wide and 40" long. He uses it more than the actual counter space some days. It also provides a bit of extra storage as it has 2 adjustable shelves and 2 drawers. When we are not using it--we can push it up against the fridge out of the way.

Thank you for the no nonsense and clearly logical measurements. Am building a new home and my designer insisted we could put in a largish island. After research and seeing your demonstration I am now armed with adequate reasons to rein him in. Crowded and cramped do not belong in my new kitchen!

If you have a kitchen big enough to accommodate an island with the recommended clearance, you have room for storage without one.
Love this video, a lot of good info and you made it easy to learn and measure with real life situations. It looks like you have a door way to the left of the island, if you are facing your dining room- are the chairs in the line of walking? I ask because mine may and I don’t know if it’s a big deal.

Thank you for watching and make sure to subscribe!🙏💕 How big is the space between the island and dining table? It’s a big deal if there’s not enough room, but remember you’re not usually having a ton of traffic while you’re sitting down to eat. But you need minimum 5’. What you see in the video is 8’. It’s generous, but we like a runway🤣
Well done video! We already have one but I'll bet this is very helpful to many. I am an artist and I share my painting demos and studio tours. So much to see and hear on KZread. Have a great day!

Thank you for this video. I want an island to replace a standard dining table. The area can only fit a square table for 4 chairs. You have really made me think how would an island be designed.

There's great examples of island/dining combos on Pinterest to get inspired. I did one for a client, 4' wide, 2 seats on the end, 4 on each side with a mahogany top. TO DIE FOR! The possibilities are endless once you know the space you have to work with.
Thank you so much for the amazing details. We really appreciate it. I have a question regarding Your minimal plan 10.6 x 10” kitchen. Why not just add countertop on south wall too(I meant down side wall in the plan)? Any advantage of losing that countertop for a 2x4 island? Also where will the fridge go? Thanks again

That would work and be more efficient that trying to get an island 🏝️ Fridges are always better on the ends so that others can access and not get in the cook’s way 👍

Thank you🙏 I'll give it a try with the conversion but, sadly, we're ingrained with numbers like 3/16", which make no sense!
I once toured a house with a newly and expensively remodeled kitchen where the island was too big and too close to the perimeter cabinets. Didn’t buy that house!,
we have a 20 ft by 9.5 ft wide room. Our designer , came up with a 8 ft island 3 ft wide. its 40" clearence on the dishwasher side and 45" between counter and island seating countertop. I don't know what you mean by 60" for seating. are you refering to length or width? thank you.
@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa
Жыл бұрын
You need 60” of clearance behind the stools to pull them out, sit and have people pass behind you. The math doesn’t add up on your clearances. There’s 6” missing and that’s going to be huge in the layout!!! Check those numbers

It’s tight and I wouldn’t recommend it. A 9’6” wide kitchen would be best suited to a galley Or one with a peninsula.
Well, no island for me 🥲
Many years ago, one of my friends bought new built with a small U shape kitchen that has an island. When they had guests over, some of us liked to congregate around the island and talk. But the clearances around the 3 sides are so tight that every time someone wanted to get something from the fridge or needed to get a utensil, all of us would have to play merry go around the island for that person to reach the destination and merry go around back for the person to get out out of island circle. It was fun time when we were younger and it didn’t seem to bother us that much back then, but I don’t think I can live with tight spaces now.

LOVE YOUR HUSBANDS APRON!!! "i'll feed all you f*ckers" - so NY-er!! hysterical 😂🤣BTW .... 1) could u do a video about budgeting "per room" using percentages? for ex. you want to do an entire reno and have a budget of $200K, so save 40%?? of your budget for kitchen, 10%?? toilet, 10% contingencies etc. is there a rule? 2) also is there a rule RE percentage for the "entire" budget amount vs house value? for ex. if house is worth $500K, you shouldnt spend over 20% = $100K of the value of house on a reno? because you will are overspending? would love to see it! Viv :)

We are planning a kitchen island but due to the clearance the builder is offering a kitchen island without overhangs. Will that look nice? I am confused as we will not be able to use it as dinning table. Can you please guide me a little about this situation

@@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa yes i do have the plans. I will share the measurements with you.
Pls check my desired kitchen floor plan. The room is 5 meters wide and 6 meters deep. The kitchen starts at a doorway from a dining room. With double sliding door opening at 1.5meters 1 meter clearance, kitchen island at 2.8m and .90-1.2m wide. 1 meter clearance again to have a 2.8m wall full of ikea base drawers and wall cabinets. On the both sides of the 2.8m wall of cabinets are .90-1m doorway/archway for the walk pantry/ refrigerator and freezer and a coffee counter. On the left side of the wall of 5m, there are 2 door ways. 1 from the living room and 1 from the pantry to the back door of the house. On the right side of the 5m wall there is a big window to let a lot of natural light in the kitchen. Is this kitchen layout good or is it too tight? Mainly, we don’t cook with stove, that is done outside the house. This kitchen is only for reheating cooked meals in the microwave. Storing food and drinking water. Storing plates cup pots and pans for display.

Mainly I have alloted 5x6 meters for the kitchen. My goals are: kitchen island. And large windows. Walk in pantry. I have 3 pathways on the 5x6 kitchen 1. Kitchen to dining room, double door Sliding 2. Kitchen to living room, 1.5 archway 3. Pantry to back door.

Mainly, I chose this layout because i wanted thee aesthetics. A 2.8m Kitchen island centered on the room with 5 meters wide, leaving 1m walkway. A 2.8m wall with counter top and wall cabinets centered and in between 2 archways.

Aww. I have a very small kitchen, and trying to stuff in an island. I’m checking my design they gave me. Says there’s only 41 or 42 between the island and exterior cabinets. Does it make a difference if the microwave, and the dw are drawer style, and the fridge is French? The oven is on the other part of the L and one will have to drop the door to get in there, and I’m not sure if that clearance is also 41-42. I shall check. Thank you! You’re amazing. Love seeing all your family shots. Very cute! 🥰
