Kirchhoff's Rules (Laws) Worked Example | Doc Physics
The Loop and Junction Rules are in full effect. Some people call 'em laws, but not me!
So, you can avoid the equivalent circuit reduction method if you prefer TONS OF TEDIOUS MATH. Of course, sometimes, this is the only option. I pity da fool.

Learned more in 10 mins than I did all semester. You rock!
Thank you so so much. I read my textbook for hours trying to understand this, and after one run-through of your 10 minute video, I understood.
Thanks for this video! I've had trouble with the Loop rule for a while and this video definitely helped. I now feel confident in taking my physics final this evening!!
This is extremely helpful! Still referring to this in 2021- and it's really refreshing to see someone sound so excited teaching Kirchhoff's rules. Thank you!
Couldn't understand a single word from my teacher but your video made it as easy as that. THANK YOU,sir. You are an amazing human being.
Man I love your enthusiasm! It boosted my morale into understanding these exercises more and more. You must love teaching a lot. I chuckled each time you made a weird noise cause I also get like that when I'm the zone haha. Great video and very motivational given your enjoyment in doing this.
You, mister, are amazing. Concise, clear, don't lose any time on useless hesitations. People who blah about this should read some theory first and not expect the internet to do the work they're supposed to do. Read some books and then look for explanations.
My study group just watched the previous video and this one on Kirchoff's Rules. It really helped out. Thanks man!
legend!! thank you for working out the entire problem. Most textbook solutions just state "solve" after you find the two loop rules and the junction rule. I was a little rusty on the math at the end so i needed a quick tutorial. thanks man!
This was so helpful!!! Trying to understand my Quest's homework explanations is impossible.. 9 minutes later I feel 100x better. YOU ROCK!!!!
Thanks a bunch man! Tried to comprehend Kirchhoff's Law for a week and now I think I finally did
According to this, I finally got my assignment done!!! thx. However, our questions always ask the Voltage from A to B, as long as the current solved, it will be easier!
I watched so many videos regarding this topic but still do not understand but after watching this i finally understand.Thank you!!
I hope you have had the most pleasant 11 years. So glad this found me at 4:30am in a Denny's. I love you Doc Schuster!
honestly this guy is a master of physics , thank you man :)
Anyone complaining about him going "too fast" needs to read first. If you can't tell what he's saying right away you're not familiar enough with the material. Personally, I think you did great. Say hi to Ara for me!

Agreed. Going through Physics 2 right now and this video was great for double-checking my process for these types of problems. Also, I commend your patience with the people saying that you messed up the direction of i2 (you explicitly stated the initial direction assigned is arbitrary).

Thanks. 2 hours before a final and I needed this.
Got a test in the morning, this video will hopefully get me through the Kirchhoff's problem
You helped me understand the material in a pinch. Thank you so much!!
Thanks there’s literally no other useful videos on KZread except for this one.
Thank you SOOO much for this. I have been doing this extra credit assignment for about 4 hours, now, and it really confused me because one of the loops had four variables and there were two batteries on junctions 2 and 3, but you were sent from God to help me at 4:00 a.m, and for that, I thank you.
WOW! Fantastic explanation! Please continue the same!!
Much better explanation than in the textbooks !!
This is a really great video -- you're very engaging and do a great job explaining the procedure
Good luck on the quiz. You've got this stuff. You're a calculating machine but you're even better at understanding!
Ooooh. It's okay. I can understand now. Haha. God, great videos! Thank you so much for existing! At least in this plane of existence. Haha. I've shown these videos to my friends and you have brought us enlightenment. I feel so badass right now knowing Kirchhoff's laws. Thank you.

+aimeiliix You're really nice. Thanks! And way to go working through the struggle. That's a great character trait to practice!!!
Thank you so much. Your example really helped.
Thank you so much. Wow. I now actually understand this!!! Please make more videos!!
Thank you!!!! Morning of my exam and it clicked!
Finally understood the sign convention. Thank You, great video.
an hour away from my physics exam on circuits. this definitely has helped me lol
you're a life saver. God Bless you. I've been struggling with mastering physics for hours. Now I think I'm ready to go.
Thank you for the help! Great video!
It was very painful that when you said: "Practice this a lot." Lol But thank you a lot for explaining. I've tried a lot to use my dumb Dr's method, but it wasn't logical and I failed every time I tried to solve a problem. But after trying your method, every problem that I solve turns correct. Thank you again !
No problem i finally got the concept.Thank u.
Hi Have any videos explaining how to work out the potential dropped and the power dissipated in the resistor 22ohm in your circuit please.
Thank you! This really cleared it up for me :)
great video cleared my confusion, Thanx Doc Schuster
This video and the previous one were honestly life savers, you did an amazing job teaching this!
so grateful. you are truly good. thank you.
Thanks Doc You're awesome :D
Thanks, you're a lifesaver!
Very helpful.. Loved it! Thank you!
Brilliant, you are a brilliant man.
When you were writing out the equations for I1 and I2 and moved everything over to the other side of the equal sign, you didn't change the pos/neg signs. Why?
I'm pretty sure that I got a 5 on the AP Physics mostly because of these videos. My teacher didn't even understand the physics and completely gave up during the 4th quarter, so I watched these instead and did some hardcore practice problems from the book. So thanks, Doc.
Thank you very much doc, that was really a good and very helpful video but wish you'd solve it till the end though, the rest is simple yes but you know, just to make everything clear nonetheless, that was great of you
Super question, betraying a VERY common mistake. Resistors decrease the amount of current COMPARED TO THE RESISTOR NOT BEING THERE. However, by the principle of diarrhea, the same charge must flow into the resistor as flows out of the resistor in every unit of time (otherwise, where would the charge go?). Therefore, the current entering a resistor is always the same as the current that leaves it.
great video. thank you sir .it helped me alot
Thanks this made it very clear!
Happy to help! Go get 'em!
You rock. I'm happy to have been part of your success!
great job, thanks doc!
Anywhere the current is the same, I can label as I1 (for instance). I chose to label the current through both those resistors as I1 'cuz it was the same...right? And I just defined the currents wherever they were not guaranteed to be the same. If you overdefine, you'll notice as you do the problem. The direction of the currents is arbitrary, but you must choose. If you choose wrong, the math will give you negative current!
Thank you for this video!!!! it's very helpful.
Just subbed. You are amazing at explaining things that some of my professors don't do as well as you. I'm in my first year of physics at university, so you'll be a lifesaver when I need an intuitive understanding! And by the way, is it normal in the US to take with the unit, in this case volts, in equations that contain quantities as well?

Happy to have you! I can't speak for the rest of the country, but I think I've been doing it like most folks I know. I think it's an important touch, because the variables have units, too. If I plugged in voltage without the stated units of volts, then the units wouldn't agree between the terms.
Doc What do you divided by if R isnt 22 in the whole circuit?
That was very helpful!
When Deadpool decides to teach! haha Great stuff dude!!!
you really helped me alot .. Thanks :)
OMG i'm taking a physics lesson with barney stinson
Doc do u have some more videos related on kirchoff's rules worked example
how to find the values of current if the last 22ohm resistor is removed in the 15v edge and the 15 volt battry is directly attached to the point B
good expanation and they give impact in studying
Thank you boss you saved my day! cheers
Such a playful, yet comprehensive elucidation enable me at last come to understand these laws. Am the only one who heard barrit that direction somewhere at 3m? ))
great videos! just one question--how do you define the currents? as in, where there is a different or new current. why is I1 in two places? thanks for your help
Why the current on the last resistor (resistor on bottom) is equal to current i_1 ?
Your accent makes you sound vaguely like Jeff Goldblum and it's kinda turning me on which does not help right now since i have a test in a day 😂😂😂 But on a more serious note, thank you for the vids. You're a better teacher than most and you really help out! Thank you.
Doc Shuster, at 1:05 why did you label one current flowing from the positive terminal of one battery (12V) while the next current (I 2) flows from the negative terminal? Shouldn't the current I 2 have flown from the positive terminal and hence met current flowing from the 12 V battery at Junction A. Please help!
Appreciate this!
Are we dealing with positive charge flow or negative charge flow? Interchanging the two will lead to mistakes.
So what do I do if the values for R are different?
I am trying to do the same problem with the R's being labeled as 3 separate R's instead of just the single "R" and it is giving a much different answer. I want to do it this way so that when I run across problems that do not have the same resistance I know how to set up the problem, which is where I'm having trouble. How would you set this up if the resistances were not equal?
Wow great explanation
Did anyone else think that he sounds like Benson from regular show.

Solve this question...............OR YOU'RE FIRED !!!!!
Just a quick question. How can we be sure that the two I1's are equal in the left circuit? Potentially could some current not flow from the positive of the 15v battery to the negative of the 12v?... Or does the same amount of current always have to leave and come back to the same battery? Thanks
Props for extra credit! I guess the Almighty sometimes works through youtube! I'm happy to be part of that.
For I3 on one of my questions I got 11.6 recurring volts/R, does that sound right
I finally get it, thank you!
you are definitely the "theradbrad" of the tutorial field

Thats true!👍
What if there's another battery in the middle??? :(
can anyone explain why the current through the bottom resistor is i1 again? a bit confused
The -ve terminal of 15 V battery , isn't it a ground so i can assume that voltage on this point = 0V , Is this right or what ?!
Thanks you are a star!
It would depend on how it's connected and what the boss was askin'. I would certainly put a current on each resistor if I were just solving for fun. Thanks for watching!
How do you know where to start the loop. You said u start at Junction2 for the second loop, how do you know you don't start at junction 1?
Why did you do a loop for the entire circuit? How do you know which loops to use?
thanks king you a real one
i dont think curent will go tru a battery that has more volt than it sors what i mean is that the curent from vcc1 and vcc2 all go tru R1 and devite at R2 and R3
Hey, I'm a liitle bit confused with my own problem, so im gonna explain it through your way. In your video, while applying loop rule (in 4.08), would you write the values positive if the current was the opposite direction? Because minuses cancel out. Thanks
@DocSchuster
10 жыл бұрын
Moving with the current, voltage drops across resistors and rises through batteries. Unless the battery is the wrong way.
Why are there two legs of the circuit labeled I1, when each of the other legs is given a unique label?
Why is I1 at the end of circuit(going through the third resistor?
Im a little bit confuse about the direction of the loops. Did u always assumes it in the direction if clockwise
How are you taking the conventional current for one battery and electronic current for the other. like current is flowwing from the positive terminal on the battery on the left hand side. But in the other battery up at the top, its flowing from the negative terminal
@DocSchuster
8 жыл бұрын
+Usama Amer I only use conventional current. This "error" in initial choice of current is intended to show you that one need not know the correct direction of current initially to use this method. My "error" is resolved by the maff.
wait hen we go against the direction of the current we subtract ,so i3 should be -ve and i2 should be +ve in loop 2 right?? I'm getting confused with the signs...
now i wanna hire you to be my tutor ahahah xD you helped me
How do we take the direction of current ??....... We just choose a random direction ??...either clockwise or anticlockwise ......??
awesome video
Can we draw current in any direction we want?
