I remember well when the Bat was shut down in 1983. I worked driving trams in the parking lot at King Island in 1982 and 1983. The Bat had issues and was frequently shut down, but it was a fun ride. We had an employee night in 1983 and a bolt fell out and hit me in the shoulder, ruined the shirt I was wearing at it had grease all over the shoulder. I handed the bolt to a supervisor as I got off and told him what happened. They shut it down immediately and it never reopened again. Shortly thereafter they announced it was going.

Going next weekend for the 1st time in 25 years. I've been busy traveling the world in the Navy, and moving to different states. Moved to Ohio last December. Can't wait to make new memories with my family at Kings Island. Still one of my favorite Parks ever

Wow watching this in 2019 is definitely bittersweet. Knowing that vortex closed and Orion is opening. Wow a lot has changed.

Enjoyed the walk down memory lane! Nice work. FYI, the one looper (my first upside down coaster) was the Screamin Deamon, which was sold at some point to Camden Park in West Virginia (don't quote me on that part haha). Peace!

yup, an animal care taker found out the hard way, when he took a "DUMP" in the lion area. you do not do that !!!!, cats are territorial, and one of the lions had him for lunch!!!!

They should have brought back the Flying Eagles home to KI and given the new scooters to CR, along with a lot of family and flat rides that aren't there anymore, Les Taxis, Oktoberfest Ferris Wheel, The Rotor, 2 tea cup rides, the Skyride, Enterprise, the Beast footprints, tree's underneath the Eiffel Tower for shade, the trams Phantom Theater, they used to own the land where Great Wolf Lodge sits so they could have expanded there in the future, probably still can if the price is right and if GWL would sell out, probably not going to happen tho. They still add stuff to the park and its still a GREAT park, I just hope for great things for it! :)

Imperial79 Yes i agree with you. Paramount is the ones mostly for destroying the park. The Monorail Safari and all the animals, and the Salt Water Circus and the Auto car rides both of them. These were staples of the park! oh I forgot Kentons Cove Keelboat Canal aka The "big" log flume ride next to the Beast Entrance.

Banshee, Flight of Fear, and Mystic Timbers are my FAVORITE in the park! I live like 10 mins away from Kings Island and have passes so we go a lot :)

In 2016, Soak City receives Tropical Plunge. In 2017, Mystic Timbers opens. In 2019, Kings Mills Antique Autos opens. And in 2020, Orion opens.

Seems like yesterday when Vortex arrived. What an awesome ride.

Screamin racer son of the vortex cobra ride was awesome. I miss hannah paramount bob land.

I was the first supervisor of the crew that ran it along with the scrambler and carousel 1986-88. My years of running rides 1981-88 were the best years of my life, good times.

It'll always be Top Gun to me!

It was Screamin' Demon. And not one mention of The Enchanted Voyage (AKA The Hanna Barbera Boat Ride) or even The Smurf's Enchanted Voyage, which took it's place? One of the most iconic attractions since the park opened didn't even get a shout out?

Top Gun was renamed Bat as a memorial...top gun has a floor under your feet where bat didn't and she's right, it was where vortex is now

I’ve always wondered why they didn’t try harder to replicate the real Eiffel Tower. That huge, boxy top looks nothing like the real one. As a kid I always assumed that it must have been an old tower already on the property in Ohio and they just dressed it up to sorta/kinda resemble the Eiffel Tower.

Bill Meadors I’m a kings island geek so I’ll explain king cobra opened in 1984 and closed in 2001 however son of beast was built and made in 2000.

Jack Dunnigan Face-Off is Invertigo, When Cedar Fair bought Paramount’s Kings Island, Every ride was re-themed and the title of the park was re-named to “Kings Island” and still is.

Didn't the beasts record for being longest got stolen by a ride by "The Ultimate"in the U.K.?

I love Kings Island, but both The Bat and Son of Beast were two of the biggest failures in amusement park history. But they get an E for effort as they were both well ahead of their time when they were built. They were just too ahead of their time, which is why they failed.

you have to remember the bat was the first of its kind when built. Of course it's going to have mechanical problem. however Son of Beast was left to fall apart. they didn't maintain it like they should have because of its size. it was a good coaster and it's a shame it's gone

the flying eagles was an old "CONEY" ride that was brought to kings island in 1972, it was renamed "WOODSTOCK GLIDERS"!!!!

the reason why that ride was taken out, was due to the fact that "TIMBERWOLF" had been built, and the "SCEAMMIN DEMON" was a very "NOISY RIDE" when it was in operation. it interfered with the activities at timberwolf, so it was removed and sold!!!

Really disappointed that cedar fair doesn't pay more respect to the fact that for decades KI was the park of worlds firsts over Disney and everybody..shit the Brady's and Danny Bonadouchie and his tools all came from Hollywood to Ohio for God's sake..where was cedar fair?...cedar point?..it sucks they could've built a first launch giga called Orion and then the theme would at least mk sense

the original bat used to be where the vortex is standing. they reused the same station for it. they renamed top gun to flight deck when cedar fair purchased the park. They decided to rename flight deck to the bat to honor the original bat. What has pissed me off is that people have gotten the new bat confused with the old one. I correct them in line all the time. it was the same thing with the Son of Beast when it was closed.
