It's amazing how you can find old footage like this to give people the perspective of what the ride looked like and how it was constructed during the time. KZread can be a magical place.

I remember 1978 & 1979. Good footage of POV. They're holding a big camera while filming that. Not easy.

Wow! Nice to see this original footage from when The Beast was first made and one of the first POV's was taken. Everything is so open and not wild like it is now. The helix isn't even covered yet! The ride seems slow here, but I guess because it is all new and hadn't been broken in yet. Great job on finding this footage!

Train design changed and breaking systems were adjusted to speed it up.

@@mikeklug3369 Giving away my age here, but I remember when they built this and they advertised the crap out of it on TV too. For all these years, I been meaning to get there and ride it. Still haven't done so. It was a coaster that broke many records back then, but amazingly to this day it STILL holds the world's record as the longest wooden coaster ever built.

@@jukingeo The fact that it's still holding onto that record with no end in sight after 40 years shows how innovative this ride truly was. Way ahead of its time and legendary. Seems like it would have been a different experience back then and I'd loved to have ridden it new. Though this is one coaster that seems to have gotten better with age.

@@SS-xs1tg The Beast was one of the first "ridge runner" coasters that followed the terrain. So the forested surrounding plays a great part in the ride. Kennywood's coasters predated The Beast, as two of their three woodies follow the terrain well, but in their case it was making the best use of space as possible. But in later years the concept was followed. Boulderdash at Lake Compounce is built on the side of a mountain. The Raven at Holiday World is another example of a coaster that follows the terrain in the woods. The tiny Rolo Coaster at Idlewild is really a baby Boulderdash as it is built on a hill. I am sure I am missing some other notable examples, but it was the Beast that was the Grand Daddy of that style of coaster. And yes, it is amazing that it still holds the title of the world's longest wooden roller coaster today.

@@Lt.Scarecrow It is best at night. The Beast is not the greatest, but it is a legend for the park.

Plus there is no trim on the hill before going into them.

Huh. So, in this POV, the opening lift hill seems to "run backwards", in that it starts out fast, then slows to a crawl. In modern POVs and rides, it's the exact opposite. The second lift hill seems to be about the same though. This is actually kinda fascinating.

These days, the first lift runs slow because you're waiting on the other train on the course to clear the block on the second lift hill.

@@TheLewistownTrainspotter8102 I know that. It just went fast first THEN slow in this POV. That's what I meant when I said it "runs backwards".
