The Caesar trilogy is proof that reboots can be awesome when the teams behind them care about things like story and character instead of relying on the brand name to sell it and going with a lazy check box mentality with the script.

I agree. I saw several KZreadrs giving rave reviews of how great it was but I left the theatre disappointed. The action scenes were of course impressive and the positive characters like Noa, Rakka and Mae were great I think. But th storytelling felt very weak. The pacing is irregular. Not only is it slow and lengthy but also when interesting moments come with the human technology it feels rushed. Then Proximus was a highly disappointing villain. He makes a badass entry and felt like an interesting character but barely gets any screentime or fight scenes. They barely scratch the surface of "Twisitng the words of Caesar" storyline. I am genuinely upset how people are super impressed by the action and do not care about storytelling. While I am not saying the movie was terrible. There were aspects I did like. Noa was a good protagonist I think. Then Rakka too had a good sense of humor and I did like how he respected what Caesar stood for and tried to mentor the disinterested Noa. Then Noa bonding with the eagle also seemed satisfactory. I think it was decent. I will rate it 7.5/10.

The post credits Jeremy scene for this video is golden.
To be fair, the last 3 Apes movies had extremely important human characters that elevated those films. Woody Harrelson, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Kerri Russel, Kodi Smit-McPhee, James Franco, all played vital roles, it's just more about how they are written, not whether we need them in these films or not. In my opinion, it's a necessary perspective considering it's our world the Apes have taken control of.
@mddifilippo89
24 күн бұрын
But the humans are literally 1 percent of the population of intelligent life at this point in this new series of films. Yes they will always be a part of the story but we have way more story to focus on leading up apes basically replacing humans showing them evolve and get along with gorillas, killing and dissecting humans etc.
@cable7152
23 күн бұрын
@mddifilippo89 I agree, Jeremy expecting the human character to be anything more than a plot device at this point in the world of Apes is what I disagree with. That is what they should be, I want the Apes to have depth more so than any humans, I think the little girl in War was the perfect use, she couldn't speak but you could sense her story just through her emotions, but she also didn't take away any story time for the Ape characters.

So many people talk about Andy Serkis when they talk about how great the last trilogy was, and rightfully so. But not enough people bring up Matt Reeves. Thanks for the review, I always appreciate hearing your perspective! I personally enjoyed it a lot. Incredible CGI, beautiful on-location scenery, solid performances, well-written dialogue, memorable + lovable characters, thrilling action sequences, great narrative premise, and an interesting + multifaceted villain. Only issue I really have with the movie is Mae. Freya Allan's performance is great and the reveal at the end involving her is very interesting, but I feel like they keep her a bit too mysterious. Feels like I could've connected with her more if her motivations + backstory were a little more fleshed out. Some hint at her past/family before the events of the movie would've been appreciated. But I'm sure this will be expanded upon in the subsequent films, so it's not that big of a deal. Also, I hope Noa goes through a training arc or something and becomes a badass. He has that fighting spirit in him but kept getting his ass handed to him lol. Looking forward to the future of the series!
I have not seen this movie, but your description of this movie make it sound like something I would like to see. It goes to show that over the years, either you have gotten jaded by certain genre or you have gotten so good at describing movies visually, that you can cause people to want to watch them with you descriptions, In the end, I will have to go see this movie and if it is all that you say about the visuals, I would not care about there not being a plot about characters I care about, it is the visuals that I am all about when it comes to planet of the ages, because I have news for you, it never was about the ape characters. All they always have been to me have been monkeys wondering around and all I could discern are Chmps, Orangutangs, and Apes. It is hard when there are only 3 characters in the movie. Thank you Jeremy -- you are the greatest living reviewer and you convinced me to see this movie!

Loved the review and your take on the buddy aspect of the movie. I took a totally different approach with my review and went into the AI and CGI usage. It's much better than soooo many other movies that have come out lately. You can almost see how films age in the "production & release" processes as tech advances between the day filming ends and the theatrical release. The effects companies that Kingdom used are amazing, and I loved getting into what they did to pull off the film. Granted, I didn't talk to the companies direction and I had to make some informed assumptions on who did what and what tools they used in my review of the film.
Been hyped for this since that amazing trailer.

Your video games references are great! keep it up!
The “What a Wonderful Day” scene was one of the deepest parts in the entire movie. Proximus using Caesar’s words which were originally meant for good and twisting them into something very bad. It also shows how religion can quickly become a cult if it is misinterpreted and people are misled.
I'm loving the Reed Richards look on Jeremy.

I regret not waiting for the movie to be available at my local library. Frankly, movie theaters don't appeal to me anymore since the pandemic altered the landscape. Dollar theaters, once a staple, have vanished. Now, the lowest price is six dollars on Tuesdays. Additionally, the scarcity of films that merit a big-screen experience compounds the issue. It seems Hollywood's creativity has dwindled, focusing more on profit than originality.
The last few seconds of this review is how I feel about these apes movies, repeating the same thing over and over, trying to get it right. It is entertaining to see it once.
I'm more interested in commenting on Lunar:the silver star. YES! Amazing and underrated! Same with its follow-up Do that as a bonus review!!
I took my 55-year old mom to see this with me, she’s a longtime fan of the Planet of the Apes franchise! Sadly though, she was not a huge fan of this movie as I wasn’t either 🤷🏻♂️ I felt the villain was wasted of a character and the ending wasn’t really as climatic as I hoped it would. But hey, at least it wasn’t as terrible as the 2001 Tim Burton movie was 🤣
Dude. The lunar reference is fantastic and deeply appreciated.
Honestly, I do not understand the love so many people have for this movie. I know it's partially my fault for preempting them with the Reeves films but this movie is easily the weakest of the 4. Proximus was entirely 1-note as was Noa. Roka was literally just an exposition dump before dying, and Mae/Nova/Echo was pretty much the main character in a movie about apes ruling the world. I won't go quite so far as to say the movie is "bad" but it's certainly got an A.I. feel to it. The film wasn't really a film and more of an excuse to say "religious figures and history can be twisted". Again, considering how Jeremy seems to be the only person giving an honest take on the film (intellectually speaking) I can only guess that every other reviewer gets caught up in pretending they're smart and catching "deep themes" that are literally only surface level

I still want to see how the apes and gorillas get along and how they’re all okay with using humans for sport but we’re talking centuries of time here and evolution. The studio seems like they’re going into this new trilogy with nuclear war in mind. If the remaining intelligent humans get wiped out then leads right into the original movie.

Props for the Lunar silver Star story and Eternal Blue reference. Totally underrated JRPGs of all time.
The Caesar trilogy was phenomenal! The CGI was breathtaking especially considering its lower budget compared to some MCU movies which had horrible CGI. But also every movie was a chapter and a story. Each movie told a complete story and I really liked that.

Those comments about Lunar are real deep lore there, nobody remembers those games anymore. I still play Wind's Nocturne whenever I'm listening to music on a quiet moonlit night. Good Stuff!
Once I remembered that Fox was owned by Disney, my expectations dwindled. Now hearing you talk about the human character pretty much confirmed my suspicions. Not saying its gonna be bad but I already know this aint gonna hit like the past three films.

I enjoyed the film. I didnt see any woke bs agenda onto it.
After the Caesar trilogy, I feel the next logical step for this franchise should have been re-visiting the original Charlton Heston story, albeit more from an ape’s perspective perhaps. Enough world building has happened to make that story a reality. Sure, I wouldn’t be surprised if that is where this particular trilogy is headed but it would have been nice if it started there. This sounds like filler.

I agree with Jeremy on this. I really liked this, but I think the movie could have focused more on Proximus and his views/distortion of Caesars teachings. He was honestly the standout character for me. It may be unlikely, but I hope if they make a sequel he comes back

Just came back from the cinema, and I really enjoyed it. I agree with the balancing act of Noa and Mae. I would prefer if they leaned much more into Noa's side of the story (which they do for the most part of the movie). I'm not watching these movies for the humans, I'm watching them for the apes, along with some good human characters. Also, I liked Proximus, wish we got even more of him

I was hoping this was going to be great considering the director, Wes Ball, is attached to direct the Zelda movie.
Hey Jeremy are you gonna make some Video Game reviews again in the future? It's been a while since the last one. Maybe Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
I love that sentiment that it was both a hit and miss. I'm 30 and have been a fan of Planet of the Apes since I was a kid, I grew up on the original movies and loved the Tim Burton 2001 version (I've also loved Tim Burton since I was a kid) and have been really loving this reimagining. Personally, the scenery was giving me very OG 1968 Planet of the Apes, they were walking the beach at one point and I was just waiting on them to find the Statue of Liberty, especially with the astronaut painting in the cave, they set it up so well to tie in with the original and then it just ended?! Anyone else think that's where this is going? I'm really hoping we find out they exist in the same universe, this movie set it up so well! Glad you touched on the hypocrisy of them killing in Caesar's name, I was so confused for a second at the beginning but I loved that idea of them twisting his words to fit their narrative...very human like... 🤔 Overall I really enjoyed this movie but I think it could have been much better at the same time...
