This scene hits hard if you understand the context behind what a knight was. It wasn't simply a more heavily armored soldier, Being a knight carried with it respect, and pride. Both of which are heavily needed for men under siege. If you can convince men to fight they will fight. Morale was key and for these men-at-arms and servants who were fighting because they had no choice gave them a level of comfort as they were not fighting and potentially dying as faceless nobodies, they were dying as knights, men worthy of respect and praise, and to men at that time, that was everything.

Yes and because the strong belief in god, the courage that god brought with the crusaders was absolutely crucial for their moral and hope. Moral and hope makes for a better warrior.

A true knight fights with honor, he is selfless in face of danger, protecting the ones in need and fend the enemy away. The Arthur Prayer in Dragonheart is more in the spirit of a true knight, than any crusader was. The crusade armies constited mostly of beggars, thieves, criminals, poor folk, farmers or children that the nobility and church promised salvation if they fight "in the name of god" - they mostly had been tricked for just fighting back the arabs and saracen people. Most of them where rapers, killed innocent townsfolk, murdered caravans, desacrated holy temples or robbed the cities and people they were ment to protect. Only the armies of King Richartd the Lionheart or Frederic Barbarossa were trained men-at-arms or noble swordsmen. Many of them however didnt make it through the journey to the holy land. Richard got terribly ill (but was well respected for his rightfullness by Saladin) and Frederic drowned in a river - demoralizing his full army.

Alderman's(church caretakers) Used to think they had superiority over church grounds. Freemasons built every cathedral and church in Europe and abroad. The theatrical cut is one of Ridley Scotts worst movies. The Directors Cut is one of his best.

If instead of theatrical version. The directors cut had been shown. There would have been Oscars. Best movie last 25 years.

Underrated movie. One of his best roles ever. Humble man who did his best.

Guy gets slapped: “I don’t know whether to feel mad or honored that I was the only one to get slapped.”

And that! is how you get a knights loyalty. If Balian are willing to rule a kingdom, those men will always follow him til death cause they remembered who knighted them and gave them pride.

This man is a legend. Lord of the rings, kingdom of heaven, pirates of Carribbean....🎉

This isn't "completely" inaccurate. At the Siege of Jerusalem, there are primary sources that have depicted Balian knighting roughly 60 burgesses because they lacked Knights (he didn't knight all the "men at arms", but by knighting the burgesses he probably used them similarly to officers to organize and increase morale of the defenders). Burgesses in middle ages would have been "free-men" (non-serfs), so while the servant (likely a serf) wouldn't have been able to be knighted, city merchants, soldiers, blacksmiths (sometimes they were free men under guilds and not in servitude) may have been knighted. It's important to remember (and almost always glossed over) that while Muslims kept slaves at this point in history, so did Europeans, they just called it serfdom.

This is a definitive scenes in the film. It's wonderful really. I've visited the four religious shrines (2 Mosques, a church, and the ruins of the Second Temple). Each shrine was very very moving. And no, no one has control because all should control!

Technically yeah. But if you view it from broader perspective its actually true. Nobody have claim to any land on earth, just because you live in it doesnt make it yours. But then again it is yours cause you live in it. In all of history people taking land either by annihilation or by assimilation. Technically you could buy a land, but those land you buy are available because the govt have already occupied it whether its by force or negotiation, asimillation or anihillation. Thats the Genius of it. Just like Balian said to Saladin when he asks what is Jerusalem. Its nothing and everything.

Underrated movie. The Hospitalar scenes alone were worth the time.

There are some women who were born to wear mascara and that's Eva Green.

I love Sir Gravediggers expression. He is saying, "be quiet holy man, there is no place for you here." Since time out of mind lesser men would lower themselves before war Chiefs and that respected leader would tell the man he has his leaders full respect and trust. Usually that man would rise as more than what he was! And he will now fight all harder to earn and keep his chiefs high opinion of him. He will die before being anything less than what his commander knows him to be!!

The soundtrack on this movie is so good. With some of the theme song from The 13th Warrior too to boot.

This is definitely the master piece of all time…..

The scene where Balian knighted Jerusalem garrison is real. But he only done it for those with noble liniage. Also, the film did the bishop dirty. He was not pathetic in real life and if I recalled correctly, he ransomed Jerusalem captives in the aftermath.

I really like the scene when Balian enters Jerusalem for the first time, alone and seeking Calvary to find redemption for his dead wife.

One of the best scenes in the movie.

In this movie King Baldwin said to this untested greenhorn knight A king can move a man a father can claim a son but the soul belongs to the man! Remember that!

The servant: You better be slapping all these other fellas too or you and me are going to have a problem.

Jerry Goldsmith did a great job with the soundtrack.

This is from the directors cut that is almost an hour longer. If you've only scene the short version you NEED to check it out. There are massive storylines missing from the theatrical cut.

that scene is my fav out of every movie i have ever seen because it holds a special meaning to me because my family was a a templar family that 85% of us got wiped out but we fled to malta hearing the ofe just makes me smile

He is basically the John Rambo of the Middle Ages. He starts off as a blacksmith, gets knighted, gets trained for 4 minutes and becomes a wizard, has 2 meetings with the lepar king and makes an impression to be giving control of his armies with no evidence of military command experience, he then cracks irrigation perfection in a country he’s never l been too in like half an hour, he then learns how to ride a warhorse and leads suicide charge, he then gets offered the throne of Jerusalem, and some how has managed to learn the art of siege warfare. And people think this film is one of the best ever made? Orlando bloom could actually play a part as a terminator
