It is pretty bad, but a little bit of fake blood and some latex intestines would have gone a really long way. Also: In the scene, where he is shooting the giant crickets off of the dude, it would have been worth it to create an expendable character, just to make it more like the escalator scene from Total Re-Call. You’ve got nothing personal against him. But he’s got to die. Sorry, bro… lol

Bruce’s redemption here is criminally underrated. He’s only an actor who folds like a lawn chair when they first encounter dinosaurs on the island, being too scared to even be near them. But when push comes to shove he ends up becoming a real version of the swashbuckling heroes he used to play, swinging from a vine with a Tommygun to save the day.

Jack Black going berserk is absolutely relatable. The one thing that is guaranteed to overtake fear is rage. I remember there was a time I was cooking and all of a sudden a swarm of roaches interrupted me and went crazy flying all over the kitchen, and I have a paralyzing fear of roaches. I was alone too so no one would be able to help me. But what happened after was that I went ham with the bug spray, flip flops, and opened all the cabinets and hunted a good few of them down with all the tools I could pick up. the music here is critical- but its not bombastic. I can't explain what about the music here works. I think its the sympathetic tone, almost like saying "I'm sorry but you are at the bottom of the food chain here and no one cares about your situation." The flare going out was symbolic. Fire is mankind's first weapon to keep predators at bay- the harnessing of fire was mans first step away from being at the mercy of nature. The flare dying here symbolizes their last protection ending and them being left alone with cruel nature.

I know people critique the film for its length, particularly stemming from the first maybe 30 to 45 minutes while they’re in New York and out at sea, but to me, it really adds to the tone of the film and properly introducing the characters for the most part. Particularly contributing to the suspenseful buildup of them venturing towards the unknown, and the impact of what is found on the island is just as significant to the on screen characters, as it is to the audience watching. I also just love how cool they made New York look from the time era they were portraying, which looked like the 1920’s to 1930’s. We also don’t see Jack Black take on too many roles like this, if ever. So it was a real treat to see his range as an actor, which to me, was an exceptional performance done by him. I just love this film so much, and the video game based on the movie is also a hidden gem.
The ambient music in the background as they’re initially fighting the bugs is great. Gives it that feeling that they’re valiantly fighting but almost in vain as more bigger and scarier bugs come out. It makes the characters seem real and vulnerable.

The thing that always stood out to me about this scene was the lack of music. The creepy crawly sounds and the audible struggles of the characters makes this scene skin crawling.
The thing I absolutely adore about the creatures in Jackson’s vision of skull island IS THAT THEY DON’T MAKE VOCALISATIONS. No successful predator roars when it attacks. The V Rexes don’t roar, they gurgle, exhale and rumble and only yelp or screech involuntarily when thrown off balance or when in pain. The invertebrates (like real life) have no need to make any voluntary noises whatsoever. Nothing pulls me out of a monster movie trying to be realistic more than when a spider squeals or a giant crab roars. The only sounds we hear are the noises of skin retracting, claws landing on dirt and mandibles and exoskeletons flexing and creaking. Even the Venatosaurs which granted lean into Jurassic Park a bit more, don’t needlessly roar and scream. They chitter, bark, pant and croak all out of anticipation and excitement for the hunt not just because “Oh BiG aNiMaL mUst MeAn iT mAkEs ScAry MonStEr nOiSe”
one of my favourite aspects of this scene (outside of the fact its absolutely horrifying and facinating at the same time) is the fact that the musical score plays such a background, almost unnoticed role in this scene, it's so subtle, spending it's time building the anticipation and itself without getting louder to then climax with the dramatic hero theme that kicks off when the rest of the crew arrives. it's stuff like that, that even when there are movies that are released today that have lots of flaws. moments like this remind me why i fell in love with cinema in the first place.

This scene is much better than 99% of current horror movies, a movie with a good script, serious, entertaining and spectacular, and you know what? The death of the characters is taken seriously, it seems ridiculous to mark this, but in today's cinema if someone dies it must be done without blood and jokes at the end so that what could have been a good moment is lost, that is really sad, visually better than all current marvel products.
I love how Jack Black’s character is dominating all these bugs and the one Crab bug keeps coming back just to get its ass kicked more and more…

One of my favorite creature feature moments in cinema. The sense of atmosphere and cinematic presentation surrounding the setting and design work/CGI quality of the creatures is absolutely stunning. It truly feels like an unsettling, bizarrely grounded (since humans can relate to the terror of insect swarms), and dread inducing moment where our heroes seem trapped in a scary, hopeless man vs nature scenario. I always think to myself "What would I have done in this situation?". Honestly, if I was there, after relieving myself of body fluids out of sheer panic, I would've started swinging whatever stick that I found like a maniac screaming and running lol.

He really should've fought more cleverly. And he definitely could've freed his arm and leg realistically. But yeah, that shit was brutal. The Carnictis worm was a real thing at one point. 7-14ft long carnivorous worms with teeth a bit smaller but very similar to what you see here, related to the Ottoia iirc, or at least based on them. Pretty crazy.

Probably my favourite scene in the film. It’s so tense and the lack of music really adds to the fear factor.
Lumpy went out like a man, he chose to ran back to that swamp try to retrieve his friend Choy's body. At least Andy Serkis had fun on the set, because he had no idea what those things look like while filming, which is why he was the only one laughed so hard to this scene during New York premiere.

You could tell Peter Jackson was a huge fan of the original film, given that 2 moments in his remake (the Brontosaurus Stampede and the Bug Chasm) were based on scenes that were cut from the OG and have since been lost. As part of a bonus feature he even recreated the lost Bug Chasm scene using same or similar techniques that the original movie used back then.

Oh that’s a Deplector and I DO NOT KNOW what his fate was, I just hope he hit his head hard enough on the edge that it killed him instantly but think of it as a giant crab and think how crabs would eat things
So this is why they picked Jack Black to voice Po in Kung Fu Panda
I think what is really scary about this scene is how realistic they made all the insects look, I feel like if bugs evolved big enough, this is exactly what they would look like
I love that the fake hero actually swung in and became a hero in the end
As someone who loves horror, scenes like these in movies is why I love macrophotography so much. You underestimate just how terribly real the world beneath your feet really is.
This blew my mind when it came out and it still holds up remarkably well.
Watching this at 9 years old in 2005: "We'll there's totally no way this will negatively impact me or my perception of bugs for the forseeable future." Watching this at age 27 in 2024: "Nope. Nuh uh. Still can’t believe this movie was released in 2005, it has such good CGI and special effects, it looks like it came out from 2015! I think part of it is that back then, CGI took time and had a lot more effort put into it to make it seem more realistic, think about the Hobbit movies from 2012-2014, those graphics in those movies are so much better than the recent Marvel Movies like Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness. The problem is that only a small amount of Directors actually care about the project and instead the majority only care about the money that the film provides. It’s kind of ridiculous because the movies with effort and detail story telling without any bullshit added in are usually the ones that make the most money, while the movies with rushed effects and cheap story telling, make a lot less than movies like this. The only problem with this movie’s box office is that this movie was only recognized and got a lot of attention until after it was released in theaters like around 1 year or 2. It’s sad really, because this movie could have had potential to be a franchise but stupid Hollywood only cares about money. Still though, this is one of those movies that got CGI advanced over the next 15 years, and inspired many different movies to come out.
