Hear! Hear! I am of Filipino ancestry and a citizen of Canada (which I very much treasure), and yes, King Charles is my King. Whenever my sisters and I hear about reparations from European colonizers, massive eye rolls and much laughter ensue, and then we pretend to plan our strategy on how to petition from the King of Spain for reparations. 😂💐

According to the bible slavery is condoned. Bishops were warlords who possessed great riches and lived in a manse where they were served by serfs, by slaves. Apology? Are we to apologize for the public murders by the Inquisition, which was led by the Dominicans, the henchmen of the Church tortured and publicly murdered a great many innocent people.

Simon is the reason why I follow the telegraph Utube channel. I really enjoy listening to his opinions. He is intelligent and very easy to listen to. The content he provides is top quality. I look forward to hearing more from him. The interviewer is also very good. Together they are a great fit. I could listen for hours.

Love listening to this so intelligent gentleman, he nows history so very well & thank him for a very interesting discussion.

I'll be watching with my 91 year old Mum who told me today that when she got home from work her Dad had bought their first television so they could watch the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11 👑

It is absurd to castigate Britain for slavery. Not only did she condemn this inhumane activity early on, but she employed her Royal Navy to prevent it as much as possible elsewhere (including on the African coasts and Moslem-controlled areas, where Africans and Moslems sold Blacks - and Whites- into this degradation). I hope KCIII will not go down the foolish path of Apology. Frankly, many ancestors of every person on Earth probably did unpleasant things to other people, and their descendants should not be blamed, punished, harassed, or otherwise held responsible. As for the anti-monarchists in Britain, they need to open their eyes and look at the antics of politicians in their own country and abroad who served during the late Queen's seventy-year reign. GB was fortunate to have QEII as its symbol. I hope for Britain's sake that the new monarch and his wife will carry on as adroitly as did she.

I am from the USA and I will watch the coronation if I wake up early enough. My sisters and mother will also watch. The world press would do everyone on earth by never mentioning H and M. King Charles as well as Anne have always been my favorites among the royals. I see this nod to tradition, the symbols and pageantry as a respite to the horrors we see daily in Ukraine and the middle east. Mr Edgington did a fine interviewof a wise historian with whom I agree on almost every point. Slava Ukraine. Long live the King!

I'm pleased that Mr. Heffer is among those of us who do not understand or desire Britain to be a multicultural society. What has been driving the social divisions and misunderstandings we've been enduring of late is the failure of nations like Britain to insist that immigrants adopt the monoculture that appealed to them to join in the first place. Of course immigrants would be free to enjoy their cultural heritages that don't conflict with those of the host nation. However, once the unassimilated reach a critical level (which has in fact occurred in parts of Britain), the entire culture will be diminished and a resulting lack of social solidary prevail to everyone's detriment.

Britain felt over populated and shipped the 1820 settlers to South Africa and others to Australia and only allow them back into the country of their ancestry with passports. Then proceeded to repopulate with people who were so diverse that one wonders what will happen to English Tradition.

William was on the plane when he was told about Lady Hussey. Maybe he was not told the full facts. He could have said, "can someone deal with it" as he was most likely working on what he was going to do in New York. We shall never know.

I think the problem with William on that day as well as now is he's caught between the woke and the bespoke and he doesn't know which way to go. HIS wife is his pillar and his Rock but I wouldn't say Kate is an intellectual and I wouldn't think Kate would ever would investigate something as abstract as WOKE and figure out how she can guide him since he is probably otherwise occupied, not to say that she herself does not have her own duties. I actually have been wondering if she was invited to the coronation. Does anyone know?

Most people who have been slaves have been slaves of the North African Islamics. If there's a competition for who's taken the most slaves up to now, it's the Barbery Islamic North African Slave Industry which has been running for hundreds of years and is still up and running as I type.

Get real. There should no doubt be an apology made for the terrible acts of colonialism that went on for centuries and destroyed indigenous cultures around the world. Pull your head in and actually use your brain or do some research into this. Apologise and return ALL stolen artefacts to their rightful owners, then we can move forward.

I think King Charles's efforts of emphasising that historians should look at the empires past is a good thing but thats where it should end.

As an American, I've admired quite a few English people in my time, and I'm greatly pleased to add Mr. Heffer to that august list. Such well-spoken honesty trumps all those 'elephants in the room,' especially when it comes to our shared history. None of us have a duty to apologize for things done generations before our time, and it is so refreshing to hear it spelled out so eloquently as this.

Astonished to see Simon is only 62 - he looks much older. Always enjoyed his pieces in the Telegraph.

No one alive owned a slave and no one alive was a slave. It may have been white males who owned slaves in the UK and the US but it was also white males freed slaves. In the US it took a horrific war in my family I've found two fourth great uncles that lost their lives and my great great Grandfather lost his leg. He and his brothers felt strongly about the abolishment of slavery. Now I hear the chatter about reparations for descendants of slaves. Ok what do I get then? I know for a fact it cost my family Grandmother's Grandfather could not farm with one leg and ended up selling and down sizing. Gram said he never once complained but felt it was his duty to help end slavery. In the long haul in the US slavery cost us a lot.

As to Harry Who he will be little more then a foot note now. I feel Harry got his shot with his book. The albatross about Harry's neck he must live with. Would that every citizen would promise to their fellow citizens that they will personally devote themselves to serving one another, in a spirit of gratitude and caring, I certainly am going to do my very best to do just that for as long as I live.😊

The woke society a running a muck! some traditional things are lovely to see & maintain.

I consider myself a political (and, indeed, a social) centrist and agree that things are going too far in terms of the so-called 'Woke' agenda, and in the consideration of potential reparations for behaviour (i.e., the transatlantic slave trade) that everyone concedes was abhorrent but which ended some 220 years ago. Many ordinary, far from wealthy people of the time paid into pension funds that invested directly in the slave trade; are we now also to demand that all descendants of those individuals pay into some form of compensatory scheme for the great, great, great, great, great grandchildren of those shipped to the Atlantic colonies? Should we ban all performances of music by Handel (including 'Zadok the Priest', a cornerstone of all Coronation Ceremonies) because the composer invested in the Royal African Company? The list is endless and senseless.

I am an American and quite enjoyed watching the coronation from across the pond. We are quite fond of the British royalty, especially among them King Charles and Prince William. I understand why our ancestors rebelled against King George III back in the day, but in retrospect, we find ourselves wondering if that was really a good idea.

Humanity hungers for spectacles. That’s why young people and not so young people go to live Rock Concerts rather than watch on TV. That’s why the colosseums in Rome where so large. During the Dark Ages and Middle Ages Monarchs gave their subjects spectacular parades, processionals and yes, Coronations. To give the people a respite from their hard day to day existence. Life was hard, and still is, so these events feed that something that is missing in our lives.

King Charles has no need to apologise for anything that happened in the past, he was not a part of it. The past is the past in another 200yrs time if the world is still here people will be saying that a lot of practices that are in place today will be outlawed. We have gotten to the point where quiet often the very generations & people that help bring a stop to alot of these out dated practices of the past are being blamed for them & are being asked to apologise & compensate for things that have been totally out of their hands. It's all about money full stop nothing else, no one can live in the past we can only learn from it & move forward. Sadly enough so much progress is being held up by woke rubbish, victimhood & money. Why did he mention that the king is defender of the faith? That title was awarded to Henry viii by a pope, in view of Henry’s critique of Lutheranism. It has nothing to do with the king’s headship of the church in England, which was established later by an Act of Parliament, allowing the same parliament also to dissolve the king’s marriage, and to grant many other divorces until the power was transferred to judges.

Bliss , HOW CAN Charles be the head of the Church of England considering the fact that he was not married in the Church of England and according to the rules of the Church of England, as a divorcee marrying a divorcee ,he is not qualified or allowed to be married in the Church of England. Erm no Mr Heffer I won't be putting Princess Diana "sentimentality " behind me but remember her for her suffering and kindness and what she gave to humanity.

The Netherlands, which today is also accused of atrocities of hundreds of years ago and face many demands for retribution and compensation had the current government having to apologise. However, institutions of trade that directly benefitted such as the Dutch Bank established a huge fund worth millions to invest in former colonies’ youth, scholarships and welfare programmes. Perhaps looking at what other nations that ‘have to apologise’ are doing could be helpful.

The powers that be destroyed my beautiful family boudoir piano, which had all the required documentation for repatriation to Britain from the US, without my consent, ……. smashed it to pieces. I am still absolutely heart broken. I gave up trying to save it after researching other similar barbaric actions for even concert pianists beautiful instruments…totally destroying pianos working parts although being antiques and so exempt from destruction. I couldn’t afford to hire lawyers to fight a loosing battle. It’s similar to and as dreadfully unfair as the suggested reparations and apologising for something none of us living did and are completely horrified by to this day.

I love listening to this gentleman as I find him very measured and knowledgeable. He mentions though that Black people have always been treated as equals of whites in the Commonwealth in modern times. Not only is that obscenely untrue but I know Black people who feel very hurt when white (especially!) men make comments like these. I recently chatted with the father of a friend of mine who is Black and grew up in a Commonwealth country. He was a scholar (and had the newspaper clippings to prove) and was fully settled in a career by the 1970's. He went to Barclay's bank (who also only employed people who were white or looked as close to white as possible) and asked for a loan that was twice his monthly salary and was asked what a "little" black boy like him was going to do with so much money. He was a 6' 5" grown man! He cried when he recounted the humiliation. In addition, the assets were held by the small minority of Brits. Look in current day islands and see how that colorism continues to impact wealth with minority white (or as near white as possible) immigrants controlling wealth. Downton Abbey brilliantly covered how the failing gentry, who couldn't keep up with the "fairness" of capitalism, moved to the colonies. There they were able to live like Kings there! It is these varying recollections that cause the bitterness in the very Commonwealth. I don't know how any form of repatriations would work but I think a lot of people would just like there to be more truthful representations of what happened and continue to happen!

I agree with Simon on the subject of the Hereditary Peers I think it’s sad that they weren’t invited and weren’t there because they do run the Government, I’m hoping that the next coronation of William that they will be invited and be there in their red robes, coronets, and glittering jewels to do their homage because I can think of no other more worthy occasion to wear those beautiful things.

I think a certain group in this country so underestimate and misjudge the people of this country, we are proud of our country and our monarchy (young and old) see how many of us turned up or watched on TV the jubilee celebrations and the late Queen's funeral and I am sure the Kings coronation. Sadly there are a very small minority of people and groups that don't agree with it all. Thank goodness these are only small and of no importance to anybody. It is time that the leaders of this country LISTENED to the majority and not the minority. We should not let the cranks and nutter's take away our history and traditions because these things make us who we are. Cranks and nutter's come and go. The majority and monarchy will always be here.

No it will not be. It never hurts to apologize for past history of having a part of slavery and no need to get into the history, the issue is slavery is not particularly good in my opinion and there is nothing wrong with saying that. People of the common wealth may have had a terrible experience with this issue in the past and probably not currently. Most people likely do want to acknowledge this experience of their past ancestors. Handle this with grace and kindness.

Britain put itself in debt for nearly a century to purchase the freedom of every slave in the empire, and then it spent the better part of the 19th century and most of the might of the Royal Navy stamping out the Atlantic Slave Trade. And during the American Civil War, ordinary (poor working class) workers in the cotton mills in Northern England refused to work with cotton from Confederate states. in 1862, Lancashire mill workers, at great personal sacrifice, took a principled stand by refusing to touch raw cotton picked by US slaves. In 1863, US President Lincoln wrote to the 'working men of Manchester' thanking them for their anti-slavery stance ..

I think there are two sides to this argument, one one hand slavery should be consigned to history, one of it's darkest threads that has been woven into human societies for millennia, not just the British Empire profited from slavery, so did the Portuguese/Brazilian, the French and from way before the Europeans got involved in the trade the Arabs (who made slaves twice as many as us Brits), the Ottoman Empire and many of Africa's own populations. On the other hand we can't expect for the British Empire's past misdeeds to be regarded as ancient history but at the same time still celebrate it as contemporary and relevant (also by giving out OBE and CBE, as a honour just award a "Order of the British Kingdom" or some such")

At least the RF are not required to get re-elected every 5 years, leading to bribery, influencing, lobbying etc. the RF don’t need to win votes all the time. If we got rid of ‘them’ imagine the 100’s, yes 100’s of charities that would lose their revenue, and then all those people who receive help from those charities would be without any kind of aid. The idea that anyone today should apologise or pay reparations for things they didn’t do, that happened hundreds of years ago, and that were entirely normal for the time, is absurd. Life was short and brutal for everyone - even the royals. They used to hang draw and quarter people, stick heads on spikes, it was conquer or be conquered. No tribe or nation is free of sin - including African, Indian, Native American, aboriginal and Māori. History is what it is, obsessing about it this way is very unhealthy and looks to me like blatant grifting.

It is not Charles Windsor, personally, who should apologize. But if the institution, after careful investigation, had been proven to have had a dirty past with the slave trade? Then King Charles III could, perhaps even should, apologize in the name of the Crown. Charles might not bear any responsibility personally. But the institution is ever enduring and continues to this day and beyond. It existed as a legal entity then and it does now. The same as a prime minister who can apologize for things the government has done in the past, so should the current ruling monarch be able to for things the Crown has done in the past. It doesn't mean reparations, but a sincere honest apology could be the closure some might seek. Acknowledge the past, commit to be better in the future. Please, Mr Heffer, try to drop some weight. Forgive me if this is too direct, but I worry about your health. We need your sane, informed, insightful views for years to come, especially during what will doubtless be a disastrous incoming Labour government with its silly innovations and unhistorical wheezes which will need your tremendously valuable critique. Stay well, Mr Heffer, please. We are a richer country for your presence and voice.

Why is this gentleman (who is very intelligent & has a great way of expressing his opinion), constantly rubbing the top of his thighs? According to those who study behavioral patterns, it is considered a way of self soothing oneself. Or, is he just nervous? I'm curious. Has anyone else noticed this?

I had to close off the lower part of this picture I found the constant rubbing his legs distracting ……..

Oh, please-- all of these people who can't separate myth from fact. I lived through the Diana years, if she had matured into a middle aged woman, this obsession towards her would be so transparent. The Crown is not reality.

Well we can’t forget Diana as long as Harry keeps re-living all her faults, lack of understanding and bad attitudes.

It's about time we accepted that any British person who made money in the 18th and early 19th centuries had a connection of some kind with slavery and stop obsessing about it. All that indignant energy should be directed to combating modern slavery, but of course that means getting off the comfortable moan sofa and actually doing some hard work.

Historians disagree. England never traded in slaves as the USA. They were first country early on late 1600's that any ship arriving with slaves were immedately freed.

All these conversations have this very stupid idea that there is only one British person. "The British people" are not of one mind and have many views. In a democracy we find a majority opinion to follow but that accepts that the people have many different view and it is wrong to listen to the one that shouts the loudest and accept that of the many views there will be some who are not happy with the King amongst the majority that are happy.
