King Baldwin Raising His Hand Is Iconic | Lessons in Meme Culture | History Teacher Reacts

Mr. Terry checks out Lessons in Meme Culture for the first time. In this short video, King Baldwin IV, King of Jerusalem during the Crusades, is discussed. I had no idea that his hand raise was a meme?! Using the film depiction in Kingdom of Heaven, the video and Mr. Terry get to talk about the Crusades.

4:25 from what I have seen people disliked how they potrayed the one character, I don't recall his name, but I think in the film he just leaves rejecting a local ruling position as his brother died or something but in real life he stuck around and was even allowed to continue ruling after the muslims took over as well as his descendants from what I recall. People seemed to dislike him suddenly being all family comes first rather than his holy duty, whitch he was even recognised for by his opponents.

2:15 I'm pretty sure it was done for a mixture of reasons centered around time and money savings. It's cheaper for the makeup effects team to just put on a few things around his eyes, meaning Edward Norton didn't have to sit in the chair for hours on end.

If you're going to rewatch "Kingdom of Heaven" (2005) I wholeheartedly suggest you watch the 3 hr 14 min Director's Cut/Roadshow edition. It's the superior version of the film and includes many subplots that add to and help flesh out the characters, especially Sibylla and her child.

I did like it back then, nowadays it is like with a lot of movies after I got into the stories and history the movies depict. I get conflicting feelings for a not 100 percent historicly correct portrayal. Not in a "I can't enjoy this!' but more in a "The scale is too big, they have dozens of siege towers and trebuchets and as a wise man once said: Where are the ditches?" It is necessary and I know it. There need to be artistic liberty to make a story compelling and to even bring it on the silver screen. If I want more facts I look for documentaries. But the more you know about something it takes this feel of wonder and awe from you as you discover inconsistencies.

I enjoyed the film, I think it's a good watch, but I think that the Templars got the shitty end of the stick in the movie. They always get vilified, but in this it was cranked up to clownishly evil. They weren't people. They were just cartoonish villains. I think a better depiction would have been to include not just the one monkish good Hospitaller and the cartoonishly evil Templars. They should have made all three of the Knightly Orders present. Have the Hospitallers be the ones thinking of the people and their wards, have the Templars be sort of aloof or distant and more long-term focused, and then have the Teutonic Order be the bloodthirsty war mongers... Because they were.

Norm, I cant quote you or see your comment so I hope you get notified, but the Illustrious Tuetonic order were a knightly order founded on the premise of murdering pagans for the Pope. They had no reason to be in Prussia otherwise. Second, they were founded in 1190. The third crusade ended in 1192. Out of all the inaccuracies this movie committed I don't think including some late arrivals would have been out of the question. Particularly since Raynald of Châtillon outlived Baldwin by 2 years and Balian never existed.

@@PenumbranWolf You are Correct, I was wrong, the teutonic order was founded during the latter years of the Crusade. However, during the events of the movie kingdom of Heaven, it actually takes place before the order even began. I stand by what I said in saying the Teutonic order was not bloodthirsty, due to what Europe was at that time. Comparatively, no they were not that much bloodthirsty than other groups during this time in Europe. Also the group of people that the Teutonic knights fought were indeed lagans, but their religion consisted in the kidnapping and raping of woman, and further debauchery that I will not go into detail. Absolutely there was a need, and justification for the Teutonic knights to be there.

Saladin is hated in real life for ironic reasons sourced throughout many records of times. A lot of Christians groups today tried to paint the crusades in a better light and enemies at the time in a darker version. Ironically the enemies of the Christian crusaders were more honorable and less bloodthirsty than the crusaders themselves. The Muslims at the time either enslaved the losers or allowed them to sent the messages of Islam. The Crusaders usually just killed all the losers/POW’s and hardly kept anyone else alive. In Christian control territories during the Crusades were be Christian or else. In Muslim controlled territories it was believe in god or else. Saladin was also a lot more peaceful and intelligent in real life which pisses off crusader fan boys.

What is your source? What started the crusades was Muslim occupation of Christian Palestine, Christian Antioch, Christian Syria, Christian Egypt, Christian Spain, and much more. The Christians had a system where they would use flags to protect families, even though they were not very effective. Thomas Madden's the concise history of the crusades accentuates these points.
