Killing the Un-Killable KLR650 - Kawasaki Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Cockroaches, twinkies and KLR650s: they survive everything. We attempt to kill an original 1987 KLR by drowning, crashing, jumping, towing and other torture testing. Team Green may have buried their adventure bike in the 2018 graveyard of discontinued motorcycles. But after digging this one up… it may never die.

I'm laughing too. All the way to the bank. It might be worse than a tank but, everyone needs at least one bike and when you consider that a relatively new (let's say only 75, 000 miles) KLR can be had almost for free, how can we beat that? I rode mine out to the Bonneville Salt Flats last weekend for a rocket launch festival. 300 Miles out and back at 65. It works, might not work all that well but It gets me there and back home till I get the new adventure bike. Then I sell the beast for 1 or 2 hundred bucks and all is well. The someone else will be stuck with the thing and they will put the next 75000 miles on it and then sell it for lets say 50 buck.

@@danmanthe9335 Well, there was a reason for me to sell. The vibration of a single cylinder engine was getting to me. I'm 65 years old. 3 hours on a KLR was getting rough. So, I sold my KLR for 2000 and spent 9000 on a 2017 BMW f850GS with a smother engine. Not knocking the KLR, I was just ready for a newer generation smoother twin engine with a bit more power.

Yes definitely channeling the old Top Gear Toyota pickup destruction episode. Nicely done and an example of when the Japanese make legendary over engineered products like Honda Civic 4 cylinders that can withstand over 1000 hp worth of boost and a Toyota 2JZ 6 cylinders that go even higher. Even the old Honda much hated ATC 3 wheelers were indestructible.

Went to a rally awhile back where one of the guys set his KLR on fire riding up a steep single track. The gas overflow tube had come off allowing gas to spill out on the motor. Anyway they riding group put out the fire with dirt and then hot wired the bike so it could be ridden back to camp. The seat was partially burned up, some of the wiring was toast, and the rider's gear had some scorched places. BUT he rode it back to camp after a fire that would have turned a Beemer into junk.

I ended up filing a claim, settled for about the same price as I paid for it new in 2011, bought it back from the insurance company for $100 bucks, cleaned her up properly and rode it 2 more years. Iron Just checked and indeed you are right! It goes under the A2 license. But i don’t think it’s economically viable to be getting a B license aswell as an A2 one at 18, so possibly in the future. But the ”upgrading” thing with A1, A2 and A is really nice

Spoke with my contacts back in Quebec to find out what has happened to Ryan and Co. Turns out they are deep in contract negotiations for the new year. Sounds like they are down to the end game with the usual stumbling blocks. For example Fortnine is insisting on Tim Hortons coffee on the shoots. Ryan wanted Starbucks but was willing to settle for Blenz. Next up was poutine, Currently Fortnine flys out poutine from Casse-croûte Pierrot in Quebec city. They have now offered a small A&W poutine. The guys want at least a Costco poutine. Last on the list is beer. Fortnine says Molson Export(good enough for head office means good enough for the west coast) Ryan offered to wash the bikes with it and asked for craft beer from the Okanagan Valley. Fortnine countered with Dow Ale. That was considered a hostile move and the negotiations got heated. Will update when I hear more.

I've broken 2 KLR 650's since 2001, both did over 100,000km though. They both lasted longer and went further than any of my friends ktm's, XR's, a TT and a DR. Yes they are heavy and vibrate like nothing else but took more punishment than any other bike I've known. One of them took me across the Simpson desert and back (That's across Australia and back). They both died on the highway doing speeds that would get you in jail anyway, rebuilds are expensive but are both now 705's and the 2001C model one has bottom end power like a train, can't stall it if I tried. They have earnt a soft spot in my heart.

This video represents everything the KLR stands for, there's nothing pretentious about the bike, it's all meat and potatoes. Congratulations on an amazing video that made all KLR riders proud of their choice in motorcycles. Good work Ryan and the whole F9 team!

Having owned two of these mules... I can confirm everything in this video is true. Even the doohickey... even on the newer model! But perhaps it's greatest value is the aftermarket is massive. There are no shortage of mods, farkles and upgrades one can do to these things. Everything from way better breaks to larger displacement heads for a few more ponies. I might own another some day, just for nostalgia sake. But it's really not a very good motorcycle at anything in particular. But it is cheap, and you can make if your own. The community is awesome, and you can get to the top of the same hill at a tenth of the price they are asking for those BMWs, but with much less snobbery and more camaraderie.

You know... It's ehxuasting having to say this, because the engineers SHOULD know this. But they needed to make a KLR two cylinder. They need to make the exact same bike, the same exact crappy engine, and make it a parallel twin. By just making it into a paralell twin, even if it's significantly heavier, and has the same crappy suspension, the engine would be able to produce 25 more horsepower, and it would almost double the horsepower. It could be tuned to 75 horsepower instead of 44 horsepower. Why is it better? A twin can be run at much lower RPM's, well below idle, without stalling, and you can also run it at way, way, way higher RPM's, because the pistons are half as big, and the valves are half as big, so you have exponentially less stress at high RPM's, which also means a long engine life. But most importantly, parallel twins sound amazing, and are FUN!!! FUN!!
