Ural Motorcycle Review - Our Best Sidecar

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

As a couple capitalist pigs, it's hard to understand Ural. Who would buy a sidecar? Why? Are they expensive, unreliable and exhausting to drive... or more? Let's find out!

I owned one for 5 years and it was the THE MOST FUN motorcycle I ever owned. Was it comfortable? No. Fast? No. Smooth? Nope. Reliable? Well, mostly. But it was very practical for grocery runs, carrying lawnmowers and 5 gallon pails of paint or roofing tar. 80 pound bags of concrete...no problem. 8 foot long 2x4s...again, no problem. Riding in the snow? More fun than the law should allow! Me and two gals going for a ride around town? FUN! Flying the chair at Sturgis? Even MORE FUN. But beware, UDF (Ural Delay Factor) is REAL...most of your time stopping anywhere will be occupied by strangers asking questions. If you are shy around strangers, this is NOT the bike for you!

Okay, this _entire video_ is a _spot on_ Wes Anderson homage, and the fact that only like three of the comments even acknowledge the influence is downright criminal. The camera work, the shot composition, the sound design, the editing, the acting, the intertitles, the script... It's enough that this guy puts so much effort into his "normal" videos, but this is a 10+ minute opus and it deserves to be appreciated.

I always hankered after one of these. The 2WD version. My late father acquired one in Falaise in the Summer of 1944 and kept it (as a scout vehicle) until a new CO as they entered Germany said that it would "look bad" if he kept it and it would give the impression that Germany had better equipment than the Allies. His view at the time was that they did.... So he dumped the BMW and the German side arm, with regret. He spoke about that combination with enormous affection. 2WD with a differential gear and (Mirabile Dictu) exhaust pipes playing across the handlebar for those cold Ardennes winter rides. I am old and tired now, but still secretly hanker after one of these.... Good video.

I bought a brand new Gear Up 2WD in 2017. It was culture shock to say the least. It was plagued with quality control problems from the start including factory installed mismatched pistons and cylinders! It burnt out the fuel injection once, the speedometer 4x, the rear brake and rotor 2x. It took the better part of 2 years to sort out the gremlins. Now, mostly problem free for many miles now, I love her to death and ride her all the time. She is one of my 8 motorcycles and the one I take shopping or riding my handicapped son and my dogs. Everybody in town knows it's me because you just don't see them much. There are a lot out there, but they are spread around geographically. Yes, the neutral and fuel lights have minds of their own. I don't care. I can feel neutral, and I know how many miles to expect from the odometer/tripometer as to when I need to fuel up. If I make a mistake, I have 10L of petrol strapped to the sidecar. It is impossible to be stranded for very long due to running out of fuel. I also have a towing hitch purpose built for my rig. Makes towing a motorcycle trailer or camper or a small garden trailer, a piece of cake. It's also allowed me to pull others out of being trapped in the snow or off the embankment, etc. I also have a Warn winch on her which allows me to do even more to help myself and others. This thing is truly functional. Not pretty. Not amazing build quality. Fit and finish is "Meh", but FUNCTIONALITY is unquestionably over the top of literally anything out there. I'm not kidding. Curiously, I have run into BMW riders with their very expensive and snazzy sidecars, who have said they want to go riding with me. When we head into the real back woods of the U.P. in Michigan or the Black Swamp woods areas of Ohio, they freeze in panic and are unwilling to continue. I turn on my 2 Wheel Drive, wave goodbye and continue on into areas that no other motorcycle in the world is capable of going into, let alone of making it back out of in 1 piece. These things are tanks. Plain and simple. They are also one of the most infectious things you can ever ride and they work their way into your heart very quickly. I love mine to death and will never sell it. Never.

Being Russian, I should admit, that this is the best 10-min review of Ural bike, and, surely, one of the most entourage, served with correct sentiment. One more thing: more than a half of total Ural’s production is being exported, while there are lots of soviet-times Urals in Russia. They’re REALLY cheap. I mean you can buy one in less than a 500$, and good quality, almost restored exemplars are sold below 2000$. So this is a real killer-motorcycle in here)))

Only Ural with side car and IJ Planeta 5. Rode in the side car in -40C a lot riding from the town to the countryside to visit relatives. Once when I was 6 I rode behind the driver and my younger brother in the side car and we drove 80km on dirt road to reach the nearest settlement. Motorcycle built crude yet so reliable. Riding off-road in the side car is an scary experience.

An awesome video! It’s tough to get a biker who has nor ridden a Ural to understand what the real charm to it is, but your video really captured it. You can’t look at it in comparison to a two wheeled bike and then decide between the two. It’s a genre all to its own, brining so much that a two wheeler can’t. Want never ending joy with the kids and grand kids, want your wife to enjoy riding, need help socializing - the delay factor is real! - then a Ural is your thing.

Hell yes, Ural! That brings back happy memories. I used to ride a considerably older model (no engine lights to annoy you) that I absolutely loved. The right cylinder head would reliably rattle itself loose, I ended up carrying a wrench on me to tighten the nut every 100km or so (say at a stop light). It was really good at getting me where I wanted to go, provided that was straight and not too fast. When I took the bike over it had been standing in a garage for 10 years, with fuel in the tank. It started with that same fuel, though changing the dead battery involved taking half the bike apart. Also, the little boot is the precise size of a standard German crate of beer. Coincidence? I think not!

I utterly love my 2009 Ural Tourist. Alas with the sidecar on the left here in Australia, we've only recently gotten 2wd. I still have managed to take it on epic trips through the country, through the desert, and over the highest snow-covered road in Australia (not that high, but we try). The previous owner circumnavigated the country in it, and I'd say a second round trip with me riding will be in its future sometime. Glory to the mighty Ural! Also, UDF is a serious thing. You MUST always allow a minimum of an extra ten minutes per stop. MINIMUM.

Great review! I have the sister bike, the Ukranian Dnepr 2wd sidecar, which does have a diff (and a few less horsepower and drum brakes). Easier to turn, but not as capable off-road. Hilariously scary at any speed.

I ride the urals sister bike, the dnepr, or in this case, it’s "older" sister, an Kmz K750 from 1963, the most unreliable thing about that old machine, is the carbs, but other then that, a 3 wheeled 750cc Side-valve 26 horsepower beast of some ww2 technology, is the best bike o have ever ridden, it’s not fast, but dam I love that reverse gear 💪🏻

Hello from Russia! At the beginning, footage from my hometown, Krasnoyarsk city. Very surprised to see him here. I had a Ural, a long time ago. This is an incredibly unreliable technique. It could stop starting for no reason. You could take the engine apart, do nothing, then put the engine back together AND AFTER THAT IT WILL START. After the Urals, I bought a Yamaha dragstar and it felt like a rolls royce...
