The Truth About the Gen3 KLR650: 10K Owners Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I share my honest thoughts and experiences with the Kawasaki KLR650. As many of you may know, this bike is often criticized for its rough edges and underwhelming performance, but I'm here to tell you why it's actually a great bike that I absolutely love.
I've taken my KLR on some of the toughest tracks I can find, pushing it to its limits, dropping it, crashing it, and breaking it, then fixing it over and over.
In this video, I'll be discussing both the good and the bad of the KLR650. I'll cover its flaws, and what I love about this bike, including its affordability, versatility, and easy customization options.
So if you're looking for an honest review of the Kawasaki KLR650 from someone who has put it to the test, then you're in the right place.
UPDATE ON SRC CRASH BARS:
Since publishing this video, I have installed the new and improved design crash bars from SRC.
They have stronger and more braced welds, and rubber mounts to stop vibration and weld snapping.
I have tested them over an 8000km trip with many big drops, with a very heavily loaded bike, on all types of terrains, and I can say they are GREAT.
Do not hesitate to purchase these bars, just make sure you are getting the second-generation design.
Some other Mods not mentioned in the video:
-Oxford heated grips
-Barkbusters
-Double take mirrors
-Click n Ride LED indicators front & rear
-Front mudguard(shorter)
-Enduristan exhaust soft pannier protector
-Rear brake saver cable
-Denali Fog lights
-Garmin Edge 530 Bike computer/GPS
-Quadlock + dampner
Everything fitted to the bike myself, with limited tools & mechanical knowledge.

Sold my year old Pan America, for the simplicity, reliability, and value that the KLR offers. It is one of the most enjoyable and comfortable bikes I've ever owned, and I've had everything under the sun. This thing takes me back to my youth as far as the fun factor goes. I won't go back! Thanks for the vid!

I don't know what it is but the smell of muddy water burning off the exhaust instantly tastes me back to when I was about 13 punishing the old xr's,cr's,yz's etc in the woods around my house.I had mud holes where the whole bike would be under water and come out the other side and there was "the smell"we didn't know any better and didn't care, anyway it's weird how something as simple as a smell can transport you back in time.

Three of us bought KLR650’s new in 1988 and found them to be just incredible for reliability, value for money and surprised us with what they could do and how well they did it. If you only had the choice of one bike and wanted to try a bit of everything then its the perfect choice in my opinion.

Spot on, a solid choice for those of us who want one reliable and capable bike, and don’t want to break the bank. Given how little has changed on the bikes in 35 odd years, tells me they were a very good bike back then. I bet the three of you had plenty of great adventures!

Thanks for doing this. I really enjoyed watching some of your off road footage. I just bought a 2023 KLR 650S. I'm a very different rider, now, I'm 5'4" and 70 years old. I have been riding for many years. When I decided to get into the ADV world I bought an Africa Twin. It was a brilliant bike but it was too tall and heavy for me to do any serious off road. After two years I sold it and bought a Royal Enfield Himalayan which is a also a great bike and terrific on gravel and off road; however, I did have a nasty accident while trail riding. I got thrown off the bike and I landed on a rock on my back. Even though my jacket had armor on the back I broke two ribs. I had to sleep in a chair for two months because I couldn't lie down. I am now going to stick to gravel and easy trails. I bought the KLR because it is much more capable on the road and here in Canada, the country is huge and to get to the remote places and ghost towns you need to face long days in the saddle to get there.

I’m glad you are enjoying the channel! Congrats on the new purchase, it’s great the they have the S model now, height makes such a big difference in confidence off-road. That sounds like a very nasty injury, good on you for coming back and getting back into it though. Canada would have to be one of the best places in the world to explore on an adv bike, I’m very jealous.

Thanks for the kind words! Yep great call, the tail tidy is such a good investment, it really cleans the bike up. The turn signals I purchased separately they brand is click and ride, and you need to make sure you buy them with the resistors. Sadly they don’t fit exactly over the old holes, so I had to drill a new hole and put some automotive silicone over the old ones. I couldn’t find a set that fit perfectly, but these ones are great because they clip in and out of a socket whenever you want to remove them.

Yo! Very concise and to-the-point review, and I appreciate it! I just crashed my first bike about a month ago and learned that it was totaled. . . But I'm eyeing up the KLR pretty heavily. Off-road options are limited nearby, but in a couple of hours there's tons of state-wide trail. Knowing that the KLR can handle road driving, and do it well while having the option to adventure is really the hook that'll catch me. Thanks again for the review! Subbed.

Nice review. The KLR looks good as a low cost adventure bike. Toss between KLR and DR a few years back and chose the DR at the time. Spent a lot on larger tank, seat, bar risers, racks and a LED spot light to get it set up for adventure riding. Engine vibration is a nuisance with the DR, causes tiredness and a sore backside. Sounds like the KLR is pretty smooth. You’ve convinced me to consider the KLR in a few years.

  • @NotShookADV

    @NotShookADV

    8 ай бұрын

I dont have any issues with vibration on the KLR, and it is extremely comfortable, on and offroad. It is still a large thumper so it vibrates a bit, but I think they have done a great job with the rubber mounts on the seat, bars, peg mounts etc, Im not sure how the old generation of KLRs are for vibration though. The DR is going to be a far better bike offroad, and also a lot easier to pull apart and work on, so there are always going to be tradeoffs, but worth considering the KLR for sure, at least test ride one see what you think. Thanks for watching.

Been a while between videos I know, I went away on a long whitewater kayaking trip so been off the bike. But back now and planning some good trips, and aiming for more regular posting. That's a shame about the emissions thing, but the Africa Twin is an amazing bike, and kills the KLR in almost all areas, and high kms shouldn’t be too much of a problem, Hondas are generally bulletproof machines, some great adventures ahead for you! Thanks a lot for the kind words, and hearing this is very motivating to get back out on the bike.

Great to see an honest review from someone determined to push it's limits! I've been eyeing off the CB500x, KTM390 and all their equivalents but I keep coming back to the KLR because of it's durability and price point like you described. But for me, the main decider is the suspension. KLR creeps up to Africa Twin and Tenere suspension specs while the CB500x or Benelli 502x just doesn't cut it. KTM comes close but... I'm still not convinced with long-term reliability. I'd rather get anywhere slow than bottoming out before the track gets interesting. Ride safe!

Thanks, I’m glad the review was helpful. The suspension on the KLR is not too bad stock. Since recording this video I did end up changing the rear shock and putting a new spring kit with preload adjustments into the front and a fork brace. It’s completely transformed the bike.

I added stainless steel braided brake lines. This really helped with the feel. I also Up graded the suspension. This is a real game changer in how the bike rides and feels. When you repaired your footpeg mounts, did you weld in beefier, longer female threads? I agree that this machine is a champ because "it is simple and to the point."

  • @NotShookADV

    @NotShookADV

    7 ай бұрын

Thank you! I find that the pivot pegs are only really different or better when standing. They give you the ability to lower your heels a bit and lean back more comfortably. This is great for very steep climbs because you can really lock your boot in and it takes the pressure of your arms a bit, being able to balance more from your base. Not a huge difference, and not a game changer, but nice in my opinion.

Interested in the rear brake retainer that you have, do you have a link for that? Agree on the stock tyres, pathetic. Still running the front after 8,000 km but the rear lasted 4,000. Replaced with the MITAS EO7+, love it. Great in all conditions and loves the road too, sticky clay mud, not so much. Will look at the Battleaxe for the front as I don't feel confident off road with the stock. Tail tidy looks deadly, where did you get it from? Watching your set up video I have been thinking about some changes to the bars myself and thought I would check with you about which pro taper adventure you bought. Are your bars the High or lower ones? Being 6 foot 2 inches I think I need the high bars to get them further forward as I feel cramped. @@NotShookADV -- There are certain lots of the fuel pump on the 2022 that are bad. It might just be the bikes sold in the U.S. Anyway, Kawasaki issued a recall for all the 2022 650s that have those lot numbers on the pump. The dealer is changing it out preemptively. I would have had the bike a few days ago, but this just came up. I have a question if you don't mind. What did you do for a break-in on your KLR? I've heard of people who baby it for the first 1000km, but others say they thrashed the hell out of it from day one.

  • @NotShookADV

Oh ok. Makes sense. I’m no expert at the break in process, but based on what people I trust say it’s better to ride the bike hard during break in. The mechanic at the dealership told me the worst thing you can do during the break in is sit at 80km/h or any speed, you want to be putting good variance through the gears and rev range. So I rode it pretty hard, and tried not to do highways/roads at one speed.

I owned a Gen1 klr for 6 years and absolutely loved it. Until I took my first extended highway trip. 200 miles at 70-75mph and the high frequency buzz through the handlebars just about destroyed my wrists. I wasn’t until the 200 mile trip back home that the full effect was felt, and I thought I was going to have to abandon the trip. I made it home and kept it under 55 for the remainder of the time I owned it. I am intrigued by the new ones and almost pulled the trigger on one last year but the memories of that trip stopped me. I wish there was a way to test if the rubber damping is as good as they say.

Wow that sounds terrible! I can’t speak for the earlier generations, but in my opinion there is no vibration issues with the KLR bars, I have done 15hour all day 1200km rides at 110kph with no arm issues. I have changed from the stock bars to a pro taper bar too. The stock ones have even more vibration dampening with weighted end plugs to reduce vibration. I would say go and rest ride one if you are unsure, but unless you have some condition with arms/wrists I don’t see it being a problem at all.

Hi. I'm looking at a 2008 klr. I am a new rider. I have a yamaha vstar and I love it. I am looking for a good dual sport now. The only problem is that I am 5'7. Am I to short for this bike. If I am, what would you guys recommend. Thank you.

Hi Brian, I think you might be slightly short for the KLR, but would still pay to test ride one or at least sit on one and see. There is actually a model now for shorter riders, if you can afford the 2023 model, it’s the klr650s exact same bike with a way lower seat height.

  • @Don2006

    @Don2006

IMO the KLR is one of the best ADVs for beginners as long as you're strong enough to pick it up. If you aspire to take it on more than just light gravel roads, you might not want the KLR 650S -- at 7.3 in., it sacrifices a whole inch of ground clearance, whereas the KLR 650's 8.3 in. is quite low enough. Consider getting a traditional KLR 650 with the reduced reach seat. Seat heights: KLR 650S: 32.1 in. KLR 650 w/ Reduced Reach: 32.9 in. KLR 650: 34.3 in.

When I filmed this I hadn’t yet covered the leftover hole, but I have since covered it with black automotive silicone, and for me I’m happy with how it looks, but I’m sure for some people they may want it exactly factory perfect, and therefore maybe these blinkers aren’t great for everybody.

My mind is set on a 2023 DR, but I see a 2023 KLR ABS on sale for $1,000 cheaper than the DR out the door. I haven't ridden in years, and I am not planning on hard enduros. Just normal gravel road stuff and maybe an easy backcountry discovery route (BDR here in the US) ride. The heavier weight bothers me a bit. 100 pounds heavier than the DR? I know I am going to drop this thing. lol. I am a short guy, and the KLR is a bit lower than the DR, which I would have to lower or tip toe it at stops. I don't have any gear, so the cheaper price will allow me to buy a nice helmet, gloves, jacket, and pants for the same as the DR purchase price...What to do...What to do...I think your video might sway me in the direction of the KLR.

The klr may have its issues until you think back to bikes of days gone by. In comparison it’s a great bike and a great value. In over 50 years of riding I’ve had many styles of bikes. I don’t think you can beat the function and abilities of the klr for the price. I intentionally got the base model to build it to what I wanted not what the factory offers. Not the pretty show piece. Not the fastest. Not the most capable at many things. However it does all I need it to do.

I'm curious what fuel injection is going to do for the longevity of this motor. For instance,GMs 5.7 was worn out at 100k with a Carbie, with fuel injection the same motor started lasting 300k or more.i don't think it'll make that dramatic of a difference because motorcycle carbs are usually more precise Than an old quadrajet but having the perfect air fuel mix all the time has got to be better than running rich and washing the rings out or running lean with the heat and all that goes with that.just saying if people were getting 30k out of the top end with a carb they should get 40k with fuel injection.

Yep that’s the play for sure. Unless you particularly like the colour of the adventure, I don’t see any reason you would fork out that extra cash. For some people I guess the boxes will be great, but I think they are hideous personally. The items like the usb charger and relay, you can fit these yourself for under $50 and obviously the crash protection is almost completely useless.

I wish people would stop whining about sixth gear,it wouldn't do this bike any good, not enough power to pull in a higher gear, when you add taller gears you need the power to still pull in those gears.if you put a six speed Corvette transmission behind an old school 200 HP 5.7 it's not going to do you a bit of good,in fact it'll probably go slower on top end than it would with a 3 speed 350 turbo transmission.i think the gearing is perfect for mixed highway/trail riding.nithing hard core either way.

When I say they are in a class of their own, I don’t mean it as a category divided into light, mid, heavy etc. I mean the t7 is twice the price, so it’s not in the same column as the klr. The old Himalayan is a heap of shit off-road so it doesn’t end up on the same column as the klr. The 450 isn’t the same type of bike as the klr, if you are going to add 450s we can do better than the himilayan, like the DRZ for example. I think this is another column, because you can’t overtake a truck in the outback at 140kmh on a 450cc, you aren’t comfortable on the road on a 450 revving off it’s tits at 110kmh therefore, they are not in the same column. Does that make sense?

I have about 7000 miles on mine and I'm a little disappointed mainly with the fit and finish.the plastics will drive you nuts with rattling, and the buffeting, buffering whatever you call it feels like your being hit repeatedly on each side of your head by Rocky Balboa the entire time I'm riding which gets really old really fast.headshake anywhere between 75 and 85 depending on the road you're on no matter what tires iv had so I have no idea how fast it'll go because even on the best road around 80 mph it's almost uncontrollable scary and I've been riding for 40 years it handles ok in curves and stuff rear shock fades out pretty quick if you ask too much of it motor seems to be pretty solid so far very little instrumentation no tach temp gauge or anything you have to add those if you want them shifting is horrendous compared to my silky smooth dr650 at least a few times every trip I have to shift third twice for some reason which is really annoying no matter where the clutch is adjusted has a clanking metal on metal noise somewhere in the front when I go over washboards and choppy bumps which isn't very reassuring and I can't find it to save my life literally I ended up taking the little black covers off the sides of the gas tank and left them in the shed to get rid of some of the rattling but it still has plenty other ones all in all it's kind of miserable to ride having to worry about what's rattling the whole time and crashing if you have to go more than 80 to get around someone and being beat upside the head for an hour at a time before my backside can't take the seat anymore and I have to get off for a while it is what it is a cheap motorcycle and it feels that way when I'm riding it but I'm trading it in on a new fjr 1300 next week anyway because I don't go off-road on it that much because it's too much work and my Dr 650 will run circles around it off road anyway should the need arise.I came,I purchased,I tried and I'm done.

But to be fair in terms of the factory crash protection and aftermarket crash protection that has broken, I have not had anything more than basically very small drops at slow or no speed, you would expect a lot better from them. And the only other thing that has “broken” are the foot pegs, and I think that they are just a bad design and these have broken on me in normal off-road riding conditions, not from any crash or misuse, just a bad design.
