Kikuyu Life Before Colonialism - Precolonial Life (Culture/Tradition)

The Agikuyu of East Africa had a vibrant cultural and traditional life before the coming of the colonialists.
How did the Kikuyu man live? How did the Agikuyu relate to the neighbours?

The book with a prehistoric people is not likely to have correct information the author even said she would substitute words for Kiswahili that's why she even called as Kikuyu of which we are not we are gikuyu she was biased in thinking our methods of metal work were prehistoric so the bias can't tell the truth on top of the fact gikuyu people were secretive and they never used sed to give information to arrogant people who are looking down which they used to detect quickly up to the 90s even nowon them so all that info is questionable

Kikuyu did not come from Kamba. In fact, if you consult history well it is the Kamba that came from Kikuyu. They are regarded as the lost daughter of Mumbi. The lost daughter moved from the fertile lands and settled in the dry lands. You can observe the language similarities.

I'm sorry, but there are some inaccuracies in what you've said. Firstly, the Kikuyus are not descended from the Kambas - they are actually the 10th clan. Secondly, the Iregi generation did not fight Somalis; they actually overthrew the Kings who ruled over the Kikuyus. Thirdly, although there were conflicts with the Maasai, they were also our biggest trading partners, and we learned a lot about warfare from them.

I went ahead and read the book you obtained the footage from. The authors, W. SCORESBY ROUTLEDGE & KATHERINE ROUTLEDGE (husband and wife), (1910) highlighted some of the challenges they faced in their preface. It included some Kikuyus giving miss guiding information and their assistants getting bored during some of the sessions. However, they still got other Kikuyus who told the truth, and the missionaries provided some more information from what they had learnt of the people. Many of the comments critique the origin of the Kikuyu story because an alternative has been passed down the lineage. I appreciate this video since it is purely based on the original book. It provides detailed information about the Kikuyu way of life that may be valuable to many Kikuyus. I would advise people to find a copy of the book or alternatives provided to base their facts upon. This is a commendable job to me!.

@@africananecdotestv There’s a lot of inaccuracies in this video. It’s important to have more than one source of research and in the case of African history, it’s important to hear the other side of the story. The first- Kikuyus don’t say their nation is derived from the Akambas. Agikuyus and Akambas are both Bantu speaking tribes are geographical neighbours. But we have our own creation story as a tribe(this shouldn’t be hard to find). In terms of “nation”, Agikuyus weren’t a nation, we are a tribe who settle in the slopes and highlands of Mount Kenya. The Kenyan nation was born out borders drawn by European colonisers in the Berlin conference “scramble for Africa”. Second- the time periods you mention from Manjiri to Muiringu also make no sense. Some of these are actually Kikuyu surnames. I think this may have either been materialised or lost in translation. Third- the relationship between Maasais and Kikuyus was more friendly than you perpetuate. They’re trade partners in spears and leather. Of course there was conflict just like most societies battle each other, but it was mostly peaceful. I think this was a imperialist twist on actual truth in order to paint Africans as savage and violent, you know, to justify colonialism. Fourth, the war with Somalis is kinda confusing. Somalis occupy the North east dry lands of Kenya, Kikuyus occupy the central highlands, logically, conflict, especially in this “age of Iregi” makes no sense. There was conflict with Somalis however, later around the early 80s, but this wasn’t a kikuyu problem, it was a Kenyan problem. Fifth- I think this was an honest mistake but Kikuyus were known for their spears & bows and arrows over swords. It’s even cited in the traditional prayer to Ngai. I think these are the main points that you ought to correct as they’re just obviously inaccurate. I would suggest reading books sourced from Kenya, written by Kikuyu authors, interviewing actual kikuyu people, especially the older ones who speak kikuyu fluently. Reading kikuyu stories, even if fictional, give a better idea of a people’s culture and social mentality. Remember, African cultures are mostly inaccessible to Western audiences and pretty much the rest of the world; you will only find information painted by the biased imperialists. I can testify to this, I grew up both in Kenya and London and it doesn’t matter how much I search official books and records, the most extensive knowledge I know came from stories from my grandmother.
