Kiku Day plays 'Honte no shirabe' in Zensabo style

I have recently learned Myōan style shakuhachi. This is of course in sharp contrast to the 30 years I have been playing Zensabo honkyoku. Here I try to play pieces that exist in both Zensabo and Myōan styles so listeners as well as I myself can make sense of the rich variations that exist in the honkyoku repertoire. In this case the same piece has different names. In Zensabo it is called 'Honte no Shirabe' while in Myōan it is Chōshi. It is also known as Honshirabe and Shirabe.

Beautiful! I can't help but think I'd also really like to hear the two styles played on similar length flutes :-)

The trouble is that in Zensabo Honte no Shirabe would be played on long shakuhachi. So that is kind of inherent in the style :) But I completely understand what you mean. I would play a piece very differently whether it is a 2.9 or a 1.8.

Incredible! Thanks so much for this, Kiku. It always makes me happy to see someone playing the larger shaks so well.

Since this piece is part of Honkyoku does that mean it’s part of Zen practice or Suizen? Thanks

The word honkyoku means the piece originates or most of them originates from the Edo period (1603-1868). The pieces may have changed a lot since then of course as it is partly an oral tradition. Suizen is a 20th century word and it requires a lot more space than I have here to explain. We basically do not know much about how the Zen connection to the playing of shakuhachi. The Fuke sect was not recognised as a Buddhist sect. However, there are no doubt about some kind of connection - in my opinion - as there were komusō temples scattered around Japan during the Edo period. Many were unmanned though. Shakuhachi history is very knotty.

@@KikuDay Thank you very much. It seems as if we have to find our own way in regards to integrating the Shakuhachi into our own meditation practice. I understand that Watazumi Doso Roshi also engaged in some kind of physical training with something called a Jo-stick. If you listen to his playing there can be no doubt that it was quite demanding physically. Thanks again
