Keyless ride petrol cap stuck?

The keyless ride petrol cap on my R1200 GSA got stuck recently when I pulled in to a petrol station to fill up. I found an easy fix you can do whilst at the station #keylessride #bmwmotorrad #keyfob

Had similar problem. But i've only ever used the petrol tank 3 times in over 5 months. Checking the manual, it says something to the effect of waiting 2 minutes and / or put the key next to the petrol cap. Tried yesterday, in the garage it opened without an issue. But once on the road and it was hitting 30+c, popped into the gas station, it wouldn't open. Waited 2 minutes. Still wouldn't open. Then, what seemed like an eternity, but probably 6 minutes, the cap opened!! So, none the wiser, but maybe has something to do with the heat. Your solution is handy and will make sure carry that tool you had. It does seem an issue though. will try it again in lower temperature.

I had this issue with abrand new GSA and what i found the issue to be was as the fuel expnded with heat, it placed pressure on the top section of the ring which you removed mthrough trial and error i realised that pushing down with my thumb on it would allow to release. I further torqued down the 2 screws further which pretty much cured the issue. This might help others without a dirty latch.

Mine is a 2018 GS so unless they have changed the set up, I ma not sure the sales guy knows what he is talking about. You have more than a few seconds . Just timed switching off the ignition and opening the tank. I went out to 20 seconds after switching off the ignition and still the tank opened. I did not try beyond 20 seconds. I do have a 2018 so this may have changed. Thanks for watching. Cheers Billy

Wow, what am I missing. I fill up my gas tank how often in my GSA. Nothing like a key that works 100% of the time. Been doing it for near 50 years.

Too much electronics in BMW bikes, they need to back peddle a little and go back to key start and a key to open the tank. This is an Adventure bike, not a city bike so keep it simple BMW. The dealer told me to keep a WD40 on the bike, not acceptable BMW, get rid of the problem as customers pay a lot of money for a GS.

I totally agree that some electronics on bikes have gone just to o far. I am always having issues with the battery in my key fob. Never enough charge. Thanks for watching and your comments. Cheers. Billy

good to, clean over time...bought a 750 gs from dealer last week, He could not open the cap to show me how it works....SHUT OF IGNITION DUMMY. I MUCH prefer it be use a real key, so dependent on key fob with a 1 year battery in it controlling to much.

Another example of BMW creating useless problematic marketing features such as keyless engine start, & keyless fuel cap. So BMW workaround to open fuel cap, now means that anyone can siphon fuel from the bike - without the key - by using a torz driver. Also means anyone can sabotage fuel by access to the fuel cap via the torx screws. So the 'dance' has got more complicated, & opened pandora's box.

I agree to some of your points especially on the complicated nature of keyless ride. The key fob always telling me battery low. Its a pain. Everything else you mentioned, if people want to nick fuel they will get much more from a car or lorry. not worried about fuel being siphoned. Thanks for watching. Cheers. Billy

Ah no, I am really gutted that you have had that experience with your BMW. Apart from the key fob running out o battery really quickly, mine has been all good. Are you going to change? Cheers Billy

@@BillysBikeAdventures yeah I still have the bike but on top of that issue , I had the headlight crap out the first week , the seat lock broke in the second week and don’t get me started on the soft crappy material used on the passenger seat (pretty much all happens with in the first month ) so my impressions of BMw and its build quality is very low (as well as thier after purchase support ) personally I wouldn’t buy another one (no need anyway , they are a very expensive lemon )

I just did this fix, only to discover that what i really needed to do was to turn the bike off 😆

Switching on and off definitely did not work for me. I am curious, if you did the fix how did you then discover that all you needed to do was to switch the bike on and off? Cheers Billy

@@BillysBikeAdventures Because i first did the fix only to discover that the lid still did not open. After i parked the bike and turned off the ignition i though "i'll give it ONE more try" -and VOILÃ. And then it dawned on me: aaah, of course: the ignition must be swithed off for the lid to open. (Just like a bike with ordinary key really- kinda hard to unlock the lid if you dont take the key from the ignition 😄)
