I tried to remove two chucks today after watching this and it was a no go. The drill would just spin when I hit the Allen wrench. I used a hammer about the size of yours (3 or 4lb I believe). Between the chuck and drill body there were a space to put a thin wrench. I made a quick wrench out of out 10 gauge bar stock and then was able to remove the chuck. They were on there VERY tight, no way they would have come off otherwise. I had a 24" breaker bar on the hex socket in teh chuck!

Worked just great, thanks. For anyone else wondering if the hex key is reaching all the way inside to a nut when you are banging it with a hammer to help unscrew this... its not. A regular hammer wasn't doing it, but a rubber hammer did just fine.

Worked perfectly for me on my craftsman 19.2V drill. I used a dead-blow hammer instead. I'm curious why you say to put it in "high" range - that allows the chuck to apply more torque to the motor, and the motor provides less lock-up / braking action. Despite that, it worked fine, and it seems like it might be less likely to damage the drive-train...

On your first chuck in the video, I think my screw head is already broken off. So, should I still be able to remove the chuck using roughly the same technique you showed? It looks to me like you use the water pump pliers to break the head off the screw/bolt anyway, so I'm thinking I just need the extra torque to remove the chuck and replace it. My chuck is working fine for now, but I expect that I may have problems if that retaining screw is broken off already.

Thanks for the video. My Dewalt got a rusted chuck and the plastic part just went round and round! I cut the plastic off and got the chuck to work again but its a bit dangerous having the chuck jaws sticking out of the back. IMHO the Jacobs, the Rohm and the Fein chucks are all very good but the Made in China DIY grades are not so good. BTW is the chuck thread 1/2" NF20?

if you have trouble whacking the Ellen key and it seems the chuck won't budge -- try the other side apparently videos like this break my brain into pieces by switching the point of view of objects. I was actually tightening it. Good thing the chuck is ruined that's why I'm pulling it out, no harm done.

If you have a decent sized extra allan laying around and a impact you can cut the short side off the allan find a socket that fits snugly over the allan insert chuck in drill and the other side hook up your impact and you might have to "burp" your impact (quick taps to the trigger) hope this helps

Don't think it would have worked with my $40 Ryobi corded drill. Chuck seized, couldn't put an allen wrench in it. Didn't have a screw, instead some kind of weird permanent looking metal fastener. Took off case, seemed designed to be difficult to service. Returned it barely within its return period, got my money back.

try opening chuck all the way, tightening 3/8 inch allen wrench, then put chuck in drill mode. chuck will still turn, however hitting allen wrench with hammer provides sudden torque impulse to overcome tension holding chuck onto threaded shaft.
