For anyone wondering, the screw inside the chuck is a T20 torx head. I didn't have one so I used a 5mm allen wrench to loosen, worked fine for me. I had to wack the bigger allen wrench several times with a hammer while tightened in the chuck to get the chuck to come loose from the spindle. But it will come loose with some persistence.

Great video, everything comes apart without trouble but sometimes the left hand threaded retaining screw won’t budge what do you do? Dewalt have a lock tight coating on that screw which binds it solid. I found slightly tighten it first then undue then tighten and then undue each tine it moved a little this breaks up the lock tight mixture which crumbles off. After it moves a little WD40 helps to get it out. The head of the socket screw is a torx 20 T20 make sure you use a high tensile one or it will bust off in the socket. The Chuck is a standard right hand thread 1/2 20 unified thread never grip the chuck externally with grips. Only use a large Allan wrench in the Chuck and give it a strike with a rubber or hard faced plastic hammer. When replacing with new one of old one back hand tight only with the Chuck. The retaining screw should be a new one or re apply a lock tight. Clean out thread first with solvent.

Not on dewalt dcd950.
I wish it was that easy to remove that screw
On my "999" the chuck makes clicking noises while tightening, even if there is no bit . It also makes clicking noises when I loosen, I've never had a chuck that did that. Is it like that for anyone else out there.

9 months later, but yes this is my issue on a 976(?) - did you replace your chuck in the end?

@@gbww no, just hold the chuck lightly in your hand and squeeze the trigger, fully, but lightly close the truck all the way. Then reverse the direction on the trigger and fully, but lightly open the chuck all the way. After once or maybe a couple of times it should re-seat everything and the noise will go away. everything
but the chuck is broken. it doesn't close.
Obviously the Torx bit broke inside the drill 😫😫
My screw head is fubar.. almost flat.
Well mine has no center bolt to unscrew, no torx, its only a round hole, so i cant remove the chuck. Probably was press in like a nail or a rivet. Its the model dcd777 bought in 2018, bruhless 20 volts i-on . DEFINITELY BUYING ANOTHER BRAND, I WONT PAY FOR THE BRAND NAME ANYMORE!!!!!!
Does not work
this does not work on a heavily used drill.
Only works if the teeth are not seized shut
Doesn’t come of that easy when the chuck is jammed fully open you can’t tighten it on a large Allen key
Ever think undoing that screw would be loads easier if you had a battery powered machine that could spin it out, leaving you holding the screwdriver still?
This never works...
This does not cover the fact that the torx retaining screw can, or is most likey frozen in place and you will end up striping the thread thus not gaining access to the Allen wrench slot.

@@onealgreen7089 Me too. Then I took a punch and hit the screw a couple of times and it was released.
Horrible chucks.
