Kevin Smith gives Skeletor a new (dumb) origin story for Masters of the Universe: Revelation

Ойын-сауық

#KevinSmith #MOTU #Skeletor #Netflix
The first five episodes of Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation are behind us, he is off filming Clerks part 3; and so you’d think he wouldn’t be able to do any more damage until the final five episodes are released at some point. Well, Smith and his partners in crime in found away. In addition to the series itself, there is the prequel comic; and so far, two issues have been released - and that’s all they needed to deconstruct and subvert none other than Skeletor himself.
In this video, I’ll begin by going through Skeletor’s original origin story, how it has changed over the years, but none the less kept its core elements. Then I’ll contrast that with Skeletor’s new Revelation origin, and how it can’t even stay internally consistent between the Netflix series and prequel comic.

I liked the backstory from the 200X series, where Skeletor was once Keldor and was wounded trying to kill King Randor. With Evil-Lyn's help, he made a pact with Hordak and became an undead being, skull face and all. Shows how quick he is to throw aside his humanity, his very essence as a being, in exchange for his life and continue his goal of conquering Eternia.

Not to mention Hordak cursed Keldor with a madness to kill the latter's step-mother and get him exiled from Eternos, kinda like what Hera did to make Hercules/Heracles kill his wife and kids. Another fine expansion to the 200X Skeletor Story from the comics. Kevin Smith is a hack.

I prefer the origin that was expanded upon by the 2002 series. Him being the older half-brother of King Randor makes his desire for both the power of Greyskull and the throne of Eternia very personal. It also adds a dynamic to him and He-Man, as they are blood related, but He-Man wouldn't know since Randor kept it quiet. What Kevin did was turn a revenge driven older half-brother hellbent on the destruction of Eternia to a "I WANT MY DEAD WIFE BAAAAAAAAAAACK" manchild who better fits Wokeywood's current politics. Congratulations Kevin Smith: you've become Two-Face.

Besides, the new origin doesn't make any sense. First of all even if Skeletor once being a family man with a skeletor woman and had a skeletor baby was canon, the only problem is why hasn't anyone ever bothered to figure out Skeletor's reason wanting to take over castle grayskull? I'm fairly sure if the Sorceress knew he was trying to bring his wife back, then she would oblige without him having to go through all of this nonsense.

I think the "grey, muddled mess" has been in literature since the 1930's and probably before. It just didn't pick up enough steam until the 1970's in film, and became the standard in most storytelling after David Fincher's grimdark became the visual template for entertainment needing to be depressing and cynical 90% of the time, both in theme and images. Whether this is just a bunch of clueless execs riding another "make it like *that*" trend so as to churn out stories quicker, or an intentional drive by the media to make the general population feel as muddled and gray as the new cultural narrative, who knows.

The comic presents Skeletor as a tragic, if a bit cliche, character who would give his life for his family but ends up being manipulated through his emotions and fucks things up for everyone. While betraying his people out of the delusion of seeing his family again is shitty that is not 'incel' behavior or even 'toxic masculinity' or whatever shit they want to throw around. He has a reason and a goal but like I mentioned he was tricked long the way. If handled by people who cared this could have been tied with the series and maybe present the Ran as a threat to both sides, forcing an allegiance between Skeletor and He-Man in the show. But no, incel Skeletor because men am bad. Fuck this shit.

@@Rocket1377 That wasn't my point. The lack of a neck just looks cooler and to borrow a phrase, "metal." Also, the original figure had the hood cover up the neck, so it is unclear if the figure was suppose to have a neck or not. The Filmation version of Skeletor again seems to be neckless with just a floating skull inside the nebulous hood which is probably where they got the idea to show the floating skull in Mike Young. However, I will agree on New Adventures and the Live Action movie Skeletor having necks. That's pretty obvious, and it would be impossible on most budgets to depicting Skeletor as having a floating skull in live action. My ultimate point is that Keven Smith doesn't know what it means to be 'metal.' Plus, Keldor forever.

Part of me wonders what Kevin Smith would do, if Netflix decided not to release MOTU: Revelation part 2. (Side note: Netflix has this horrible practice that they don't pay, until the entire contracted episodes have been released by Netflix. In this case, I think that MOTU: Revelation parts 1 and 2 are considered one contracted series. I want MOTU: Revelation part 2 released, so that Powerhouse Animation gets paid.) For me, I like the Skeletor origin story that Spector Creative did during his time has line owner of Mattel's He-Man Classics line. In this origin, Astronaut Marlena Glenn--who later becomes Queen Marlena--flies through an experimental and unstable space rift. This space rift brings Keldor, and his entire race, to pre-Eternia. Keldor's race, at the time, was a very advanced, scientific peoples that was the opposite of pre-Eternia's barbaric inhabitants. There's a big battle between the barbarians and Keldor's people to where Keldor's race is nearly wiped out. Skeletor's hatred and desire to conquer Eternia comes from what happened to his people. In this origin, I think, it's hinted that Trap Jaw also came from Keldor's race.

I'm not a big fan of the new series either (2002 was way better), but we have to be carefull to not take everything to serious. Together with this comic, it seems they are litterally coping the Joker who also told multiple origin stories of himself in The Dark Knight. And since Mark Hamil plays skeletor and also the joker... I think that's the main reason for these BS origin stories. I could also be wrong off course. We'll just have to wait and see.

I really like the way you end your videos with the emphasis on us the viewers, and asking us what WE think. It makes us feel like we are part of a discussion with you rather than just viewer.

I thinking the planet of Skeletors, makes me think of a old children's book, funny Bones and the line "In a dark, dark, town, in a dark, dark street, in a dark, dark house!" While I'm not majorly familar with Skeletor's origins in the comics but I can certainly see how badly messed up Revelation is, the real revelation is, that its a frickin mess, bad written and full of plot holes, I hope Kevin Smith's career comes to a grining halt after this movie he working on, such a talentless person, should not be working in Hollywood, full stop!

From the new information of the original and what's happening it could be set that how insane skeletor is remembering his life wrong almost every time but only right twice as the brocken cloak tells / in the skeletor origins comic he left in a portal after attacking his brother who knows where he was or doing on it besides hordak creating skeletor

Great video, the passion and reverence you have for He-Man makes me consider going back and watching the old content.

It says in the comic itself, that Skeletor was lying to Evil-Lyn about his origin. He was just telling tall tales and she was easily about to see through his tall tale. The comic is more about Evil-Lyn and how much she stays with Skeletor no matter how much he lies to her.

Sure it was supposed to be 25% different, or they could only use a 25% of its likeness? Because this is mostly trash rewriting of a delusional fan fiction now.

I'm surprised at this point that Smith hasn't rewritten Skeletor to be a creative who once had a planet of geeks he ruled, but those geeks rose up against him and now Kevin Skeletor is left weeping over what was and takes many selfies decrying what was.

This Skeletor story is almost a rip off from Mortal Kombat Scorpion's origin story.

Is Kevin Smith SERIOUS!?!?!?! Even I was expecting all the lore! It’s SO easy to remember it all as a fan and to work it in the show! And he says WE’RE the ones who aren’t the real fans? I bet the only He-Man he watched was the Robot Chicken one with that gross baby Skeletor fantasy, he loved that creepy episode so much he’s trying to bring it back again at 6:19 lol XD
