As an American, I started with listening to various versions of English accents in tv shows, then a bit of Wales with Gavin and Stacey, lots of AU, then NZ accents. Honestly don't have much to listen to for Irish accents except Colin Farrell and the handful that end up on UK Love Island, but for me it's somewhat similar to the melodic accent of the Kiwis, just in a different way. Kiwis actually speak a lot like a region of California I grew up near, that so-called Valley Girl intonation where every sentence sounds like a question. Honestly surprised I can understand this man who's well Scottish, but it appears I can. Perhaps it has to do with having lived all over the US and being able to adjust my accent a bit to mirror the person with whom I'm communicating at the time. I've not travelled abroad, but I'm told I pick up slang easily so I suspect that helps.

It always depends where he's p[laying - his stuff recorded in Glasgow he goes full Glasgow and is nearly incomprehensible, he pulls it back when he performs elsewhere, and when he performs outside UK he's even easier to understand. One of my favorite lines from him was from the show "Would I Lie To You", in which he describes a language issue allegedly resulting in him accidentally buying a horse as "A Bulgarian guy trying to speak English, and two Scottish guys... trying to speak English."

My parents were together 53 years and my dad (American) could never understand the Geordie accent (my mum's family is from the north) though we went north yearly. We always had to translate. There's a huge array of different local dialects all across the British isles which is pretty confusing to most non Brits.
