I remember may 1989 coupe attempt like yesterday. Ethiopia lost well educated experienced Generals and other very high ranking officer's in the military, air force, police force and navy. Derg and Weyane regime's are Ethiopia's darkest history.

The interviewer is wrong, when he started the interview calling Tesfaye Woldeselassie as General, correction he was not General. Tesfaye Woldeselassie was head of Ethiopian security and Shaleka Mengestu Gemechu was adviser of Mengestu Hailemariam are the two people who found out ordered their army to take ministry of defence, ministry of information, radio stations telecommunications, Bole international airport, Debrezeit Ethiopian air force and closing off major roads, to the capital at the same time they call Generals and other officers to surrender, but Major General Halegorgis Habtemariam was head of Ethiopian defense forces who was loyal to Mengestu Hailemariam who was against the coup was shot and killed by Major General Abera Abebe inside ministry of defence meeting room. Major General Abera Abebe panicked and left before Mengestu Gemechu's soldiers arrived. Afte that he who was on the run hiding his sister's house but her husband who was in the army reported him to Colonel Yaditie Gurmu who was his boss, hopping to get promotion and financial gain which he did not get from Yaditie Gurmu, but he lost his marriage as a result. Anyway Yaditie ordered his soldiers killed Major General Abera Abebe after shootout. Major General Fanta Belay minister of industry was found three days later hiding trying to leave, just inside ministry of defence gate under small container floor, Major General Werku Zewedie head of Ethiopian police force gave himself up, with other Brigadier Generals, Colonels and other military officers have themselves up after two days of shootings in Addis Ababa. Major General Mered Negussie head of Ethiopian armed forces who killed himself in ministry of Defence, Major General Amha Desta head of Ethiopian air force also killed himself. Many Military helicopter's were flying very low and throwing flyers declaring the "fall of dictator Mengestu Hailemariam." Many MIG fighters also flying very low in support of the coup. Major General Kumelachew Dejenie came and landed to Addis Ababa's old international airport from Asmara with some 400 Troops with antonov military plain, waiting for instructions, little that they know ministry of defence was surrounded Mengestu Gemechu's soldiers, telecommunications was shut down after hours later, Major General Kumelachew Dejenie became suspicious when he realised and Mengestu's troops on their way, he left his troops and run for his life day and night, he went to his family change his military cloth to civilian to Kenya border. who later went to United States. In the meantime the Asmara's coupe attempt last for three days under head of Mejor General Demesie Bulti head of Ethiopian army in Eritrea, who controlled the radio station and announcing fall Mengestu Hailemariam three days nights. But After Mengestu Hailemariam arrived in Addis Ababa, a few Generals led by Mejor General Ahmed Ahmed who stationed outside Asmera sent his troops on his bosses and killed many of them including major General Demesie Bulti dragging his body in the streets of Asmara, Major General Ahmed Ahmed was also to get promotion and financial gain from Mengestu's regime. When he realised he wasn't popular by many officers after killing Demesie Bulti and other war heroes and likeable character and Popularity, he asked for transfer to the southern Ethiopia military division. The irony After that Mengestu Hailemariam regime didn't stay in power for long (only two years), The day he runaway to Zimbabwe, Asmara Which was surrounded EPLF troops broke the Ethiopian Army defence of 200,000 troops, and controlled Asmara. A year later they have referendum on their future of their country. Two days later criminals Weyanes came to Addis Ababa (to power). In any case if this coup would have been successful, Weyane wouldn't have a chance to come to power. But I am not sure on Eritrea, they may have referendum or some sort. But as far as Weyane's is concerned I don't believe shabia willing to give up their 30 years struggle for independence just to fight for Weyane's. In other words shabia and these generals would have destroyed Weyane in exchange of Eritrean independence.
