This tiny Kestrel chick hatched in a way previously unseen before. Once it emerged from its shell, the mother tried to help it break free. She can be seen manoeuvring it around, trying to get it back with the other eggs.
After incubating a clutch of six eggs, the first Kestrel chick hatched. For some reason, this egg had become stuck underneath the female and was dragged towards the back of the nest. When the chick started to emerge, the mother pecked at the broken egg to aid the hatching process. At this point, tiny chirps from the newly hatched chick were heard, and it moved around, trying to break free. At this point, the mother was trying to move it back with the clutch of eggs, so it could be kept warm.
A few moments later, the shell was fully removed from the chick and can be seen receiving its first meal. Typically, the male will find food such as voles and mice and pass them to the female, which is then fed to the chicks.
What started as a few moments of concern turned into a beautiful outcome. A wonderful moment of nature.
