This footage was captured in one of our nest boxes in Massachusetts, USA, during the Spring 2023 breeding season. This female did a fantastic job of incubating her seven eggs for twelve days before they started to hatch. The first chick emerged on the morning of 19 April, closely followed by four others shortly thereafter.
You will notice the female bird eating the shells of the newly hatched eggs. This is completely normal and a way to replenish lost nutrients during laying. Some will choose to take them outside and discard them away from the nest to avoid attracting unwanted attention.
All of these chicks went on to successfully fledge sixteen days later.
