The problem with the legend title is he never fought Roy Jones in his prime. He beat an old Roy Jones and an old Bernard Hopkins. He needed Roy Jones but Roy didn't need him to become a legend.

@Greenfields 12 Joe had his chance to prove it by coming to New York or Las Vegas to prove it. Roy Jones was already considered an all time great before he moved up and lost to Antonio Tarver. I never hear Joe Calzaghe name mentioned or considered an all time great. I don't even think Joe Calzaghe is in the boxing hall of Fame is he?

+Manuel P. A lot of the reason why is because of American Vs. British fans and the back and forth that usually ensues when they compare fighters from their respective lands. One side of people try to downplay a boxer’s career/ability from the other side of the ocean and vice versa

Fury fans can be a bit of the same but not as bad lol Just too many casual boxers talking like they know everything about boxing and only ever talk about it at the time of a big fight. Except now it's changed even further to the point where casuals and hardcore fans alike support anybody who holds the same political/social views as them and who has the best media personality. The LDBC loves Wilder and Spence but they can't stand Terence Crawford. British fans love Joshua but they strongly dislike Fury or vice versa. Mexicans love/hate Canelo Alvarez but they were all for Marquez, Morales and Barrera. I just focus on appreciating the science that goes behind boxing and all the different styles that each fighter uses

Joe had something the vast majority of top level British boxers don’t have. The ability to adjust, adapt and overcome in any fight against any opponent. Not something you can easily teach someone, but it’s a mark of greatness.

British fighters are generally very stiff and basic. Calzaghe was so fluid and varied, just totally unique for his environment. Which probably comes from being trained by a total outsider in his dad, who had his own ideas.

@@darrengoodwin9819 how did he struggle against Eubank. Put him down twice and outpointed him easily. Eubank only 31 at the time. After this fight with Joe, Chris Eubank arguably put up 2 of the best performances of his career in his magnificent fights with Carl Thompson at Cruiserweight. Easily defeated Roy Jnr who admittedly was past his best. As for Hopkins he might have been the best over 40 athlete in the history of boxing. Joe clearly won 8 rounds. Hopkins had to resort to feigning injuries as he as fit as he was couldn’t keep up with Joe. Don’t be applying for a job as a boxing journalist anytime soon.

Well done Joe on this performance but also credit to Mikkel Kessler who came back to win the world title again after this fight.

Manny Steward is the only american commentator I could ever listen to and respect. He knew his boxing more than anyone from anywhere I've ever heard, he really could look past geo, past race, past everything and see true skill and say it how it was, he was never afraid to go against bias narrative of the other american commentators. Such a shame he's not with us now.

Right? I mean we can forgive how he broke Naseem Hamed and the buried him on National television for doing exactly what Manny told him to do. We could forget how he cheered on Roy Jones against Glen Johnson. Went so far as to call Johnson "amateurish" because he started the fight aggressively. Only to later double down and declare Roy was going to knock Johnson out in the 9th, remind me please, how did that go? And who cares he would make the fights about himself?

People go on about Joe's hand speed (and rightly), but dam he had a chin.

RYKKKKKK No argument in the modern era but spoke to father and he says look up Ted Lewis. Very difficult to compare fighters from the 1910's something ridiculous like 300 fights so I will say modern era.

just about every fight of Joe is 1000 punches if it goes the full 12 rounds. Nobody like Joe. He makes many other fighters look dull and boring. The wonderful southpaw mentality. Bring it forward ! like the PACMAN.

Calzaghe was, in his time, the slickest best sweet science practitioner. As a fan he was a absolute warrior and a delight to watch.

Calzaghe is as close to Sugar Ray Robinson as l have ever seen. I do not know why the so called experts can't see the similarities. Both had tremendous power in each hand and could knock an opponent out while moving backwards. Both confused opponents by their unorthodox style but unfortunately what happened to Robinson has happened to Calgazhe there is no one left to fight in his weight class so he will go to 175 and fight in the light Heavyweight class. In my opinion Robinson and Calzaghe were the two best fighters and genuine nice people that lived.

P.S Emmanuel is the most honest best commentator I've ever heard, he's not bias at all, normally American commentators are painfully bias, but he isn't, hes less bias than uk commentators who I regard as not so bias, he's just such a nice honest guy, he tells it how he sees it. Calzagne was one of the most underrated boxers of a generation!!! The speed of his hands really were incredible. The only negative thing I can think of about him his that he had terribly weak hands and they were constantly prone to broken bones in his hands which was the reason I tended to slab alot with some of his punches. I can remember one fight were he broke his hand in the first or second round but then he outboxed the other guy one handed for the next 10 to 11 rounds. It was incredible. His punches were so accurate and so fast that not many could defend such a vast amount of punches being thrown in a few seconds!!! Amazing talent from the UK

I think it was the slapping that caused the hand injuries. See him when he was young, he slapped the same but punched harder, he was bound to break his hands

Everyone has under rated Joe Calzaghe, all the way through his entire career, all the way up to the finish. Yet... Joe is not only unbeaten, but... was there any fight Joe ever had where he even legitimately looked in trouble? Under rate him all you want... he's one of the best ever.

@@mizofan Right? It's amazing his career lasted as long as it did. If it had lasted 3-4 more, that've have been really incredible. Incredible speed. Incredible motor. Didn't let another guy bully him around the ring. I bet when his hands were healthier, he hit harder. He's one of the few boxers that all the way to the end of his career, he was relying on his speed. Most boxers get slower but tend to hit harder as they age. Ironically... not Joe. Maybe that's why he was successful... He knew he could never rely on his hands for insano power so he just plays this game of beating you down round after round after round. Love watching his fights :)

One of the best fights I've ever seen. Kessler is impressive, but Calzaghe is aaaaaamazing.

Calzaghe was amazing, unbelievable workrate and fitness for a SMW. He punched hard and knocked guys out earlier in his career before he injured his left hand, but compensated with unbelievable speed and silky southpaw skills and intelligence in the latter of his fights. Great fighter, always found a way to win and had a great fighting heart.

A man who gives it all he’s got, not many as good as Joe. I see a little boy doing what he has to to please his dad. Amazing story. This match was one of his best challenges. A damn shame he’s not been recognised enough worldwide.

Emanuel Steward is a true gentleman and wisest boxing coach and commentator...RIP Emanuel...

Max Kellerman - just listen to the HBO commentaries on ALL of Calzaghe's fights on here - if you want a definition of clueless - Kellerman is it.

What an honest man and a true sportsman Kessler is and a great fighter Calzaghe... Froch dream on.

Joe was giving away 7 years, height and reach and yet the way he adjusted to his opponent and got a convincing win was a sight to behold.

Did you keep a straight face when you typed that? He was elevated in a lot of peoples eyes when he slapped a grossly overrated Jeff Lacey for 12 rounds. He avoided Roy Jones like the plague until Roy Jones was so shot to pieces that my 6 year old daughter could have beaten him, and Cal-slappy STILL struggled to beat him. He gave up any titles that he slapped his way to with the exception of the WBO belt because they were happy to let him defend against mediocre opposition. Best super middleweight of all time? Absolutely not. Roy Jones was better, James Toney was better, Nigel Benn was better, they never avoided anyone. They fought the best when the best were at their peaks.

Kessler has to be the biggest super middleweight I've ever seen and had skill and will to boot yet Joe beat him soundly! Joe was just amazingly! His punch output was phenomenal

The great thing about watching this fight live was the longer it went, you knew Calzaghe would win on points, but at thesame time you felt Kessler could win by stoppage, and also felt Calzaghe could score a knockdown. It was great :-)

Joe would have schooled Froch.

Calzaghe was just a great fighter. Wonderful boxer, smooth and slick. Loved to watch him. This was a great performance by Calzaghe.

ben dain-smith He avoided fighting outside of the UK until the end of his career. He came along at the end of one of the most exciting era's in the super middleweight division. We had a guys like Michael Watson who was an even slicker version of Kessler, we also had Nigel Benn and Eubank in their primes. They fought and beat far better fighters than Calzaghe, they fought more frequently and had amassed just as many fights in their late 20's early 30's than Joe did in his late 30's. Although most wont argue that Cal was the most skilled out of Benn and Eubank, he was never really tested because he didn't push himself. He didn't attain his perfect record from fighting the best in their primes, he waited until guys were past it like Roy who had been KO'd twice before they fought but he claimed after their fight that he ended Roy's career.... Not many believe he would have beaten Hopkins in his prime Judging by their fight where hops was really competitive at the age of 42, which is the age Joe is right now.

To me it comes down to the US being a large place and most US boxing fans relating more to US fighters. Some great US fighters avoided certain opponents or rematches. Calzaghe is not alone in doing that. - The problem for Calzaghe with many US fans is that he is a foreign fighter and he didn't fight very often in the US. To build a large following in the US a foreign fighter has to have a lot of fights in the US. Otherwise a foreign fighter, no matter how good, is just not going to get that much respect from a lot of fans here. - This fight was a good example of that. Kessler is a top 10 all time super middleweight on many boxing website lists. Calzaghe beating him and being undefeated should make Calzaghe a very highly rated all time super middleweight. But that's not the way it works for a lot of US fans. Calzaghe is from Wales and he didn't fight most of the time in the US against US fighters. So, that's why so many US fans on KZread don't consider him to be very good. - I'm unusual. I'm a US boxing fan of many years who has seen lots of fights. And I consider Calzaghe to have been an excellent fighter. Another great foreign boxer who is not well known in the US is Carlos Monzon, a middleweight from Argentina. Imo a person doesn't have to be born in the US and fight a lot in the US to be considered great. Edit; mr t mentioned Michael Watson, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank. Eubank beat Watson and fought Benn to a draw. Calzaghe beat Eubank.

bb1111116 I hate the term lucky punch, but if Eubank fought Watson 10 times he'd lose 9 times. Eubank was in his prime when he fought Watson and he clearly lost their 1st fight and he was losing every round of their 2nd fight until he landed that punch. Lets not forget that Watson also went toe to toe with Benn and stopped him easily. Eubank came out of retirement when he fought Calzaghe, he was passed his prime and had already amassed more fights than Calzaghe's entire career in his late 20's. Gerald Mcclellan was also a far better fighter than Benn but he lost to him under extremely strange circumstances cause by a headbutt. That era of the super middleweight division was insane, unfortunately Calzaghe came slightly later, so he should have seeked out all the highly rated fighters in his time. Calzaghe said he would never fight in Germany against Sven Ottke who was rated equal to Calzaghe at that time. Bear in mind that Eubank fought in Germany against an undefeated champion and he experienced racism from the crowd throughout that fight but he still won. What was Calzaghe's excuse?

@mr t; Ottke fought Byron Mitchell winning by a split decision in Germany. And that same year Calzaghe knocked Mitchell out in the second round. So, Calzaghe fought someone who was at Ottke's level (Mitchell was an all time good fighter) and clearly beat him. - As for an Ottke fight, many famous fighters have ducked fights. I don't know the details about why Ottke and Calzaghe didn't fight. Maybe Calzaghe wanted to fight in a neutral country? He had a fight in Denmark in 2001 while Ottke never fought outside of Germany (except for one fight in Austria). - As for Eubank, talking about lucky punches and who is in their prime is besides the point. Eubank was still a title contender when he fought Calzaghe. Calzaghe beat Eubank and Kessler. And Ottke didn't fight those boxers. Ottke did defeat Brewer and Reid but so did Calzaghe. Using the top 10 all time super middleweight rankings from boxingscene.com, Calzaghe fought the better fighters.

bb1111116 Mitchell wasn't as good as Ottke at that point in his career, Ottke used to point out that Calzaghe would only beat people after that had already been beaten by him, lol. I also belive that Calzaghe would have beaten Ottke but the fact that he didn't seriously push to have that fight pissed me off. I also would have loved if Calzaghe had fought Hopkins and James Toney earlier in his career, or made the move to light heavy by taking on and beating Dariusz Michalczewski before facing a prime Roy. This would have made him extremely famous early on in his career if he had beaten either one, but he didn't push himself.

You know someone is going to win if Kellerman says the other guy is doing better better and making them look bad in the early rounds.

Kessler was a fantastic fighter and true warrior! But Calzaghe was just relentless and Kessler couldn't deal with the volume of punches and the angles they came from! Great fight!!!

I just learned of this guy a yr ago. Been watching all of his fights. A clear goat.

Joe was just something special

Calzaghe was never a big hitter, rarely got rid of boxers with his punching power, but his agility, skill, workrate, and quick flurry of punches, that landed more often than not, got him ovet the line. His record speaks for itself, he was a brilliant fighter.

Even with the slaps, Calzaghe was still far from a weak hitter, especially before he had brittle hands. One of the things Chris Eubank talked about was how hard Calzaghe really punched back then, and I certainly believe him. Joe put Chris on the canvas in the first round.

When a fighter travels, defeated the best,is considered ONE of the greatest of all time..Are so many great fighters through the ages,not all American..Floyd,Ward, Crawford never leaves home..They were greats but won't top my list.Undfeated Home O's are ok,but will never top the list..Calzaghe was a great in any nation

@@solidcake3401 I said nothing about Hype-jobs,leaving once an entire career isn't exactly travelling but still at least challenged oneself.It is pretty even in that regard aside Lomachenko and Usyk,they truly can win on any shore and prove it.One or two times in a thirty + bout career, isn't exactly spanning the globe.The economic state of a nation should not have anything to do with venue chosen, should be level through Assocations..No hype jobs only folk globally consider it a advantage always being home, everyone's trend in past 30 years..

@@TheVillest I was speaking of boxing in general.Calzaghe I think fought five times,two In United States.I think It should be like other sports with even home and away to keep it level ,because home is a advantage and crucial to resume value.It is best one learns to travel early in career,early as possible

How times change....168lbs has been one of the best weight classes for the last 30 years now.

Calzaghe was in a class of his own. People say that he slaps, well he slaps hard enough, accurate enough and fast enough to remain unbeaten. I think he would have beaten jones jr and hopkins in their primes. there was no escaping Calzaghe's constant assaults.

"Hard work beats talent when talent can't work hard", Joe is also a tough nut!, took the punches as well as giving them and never shy'd away from an 'exchange', a prime Jones may have prolonged the very outcome of their encounter by a couple of rounds at best!, but my argument always is on the basis of a 'fair assessment', you compare a prime Jones,hopkins etc. to a younger calzaghe, I can't even use the term 'prime' alongside Joes name because he is one fighter who never showed signs of slowing down right up to his last punch of his last fight

@@johnnysheridan B/C of his hand trouble he was forced to do this. He was truly amazing. But you can see it over his career, early in all KO's, Then later his style had to change. His was forced to try to preserve the left hand. You can see it clearly in a few of his fights when he was knocked down, He would get fierce with the left for a round or two, killer fierce. Watch what happens to Byron Mitchell when he knocks Joe down early. Joe brings out his big gun and the fight gets stopped in the same round. Joe never lost his power but he was forced to use it only when he knew he had too. SMART, great fighter.

brilliant fight, look how calzaghe adjusts in the 5th round, he tightens up his boxing and goes back to the jab, smart fighter

One of my alltime favourite fights. Kessler was absolute worldclass, but Calzaghe fought in his own league.

good win, but shame joe turned down the rematch in Denmark against a non-injured kessler.

Both fighters were at their absolute peak and produced a great fight

Joe is the best fighter ever at adapting to different boxing styles, he relentlessly takes away what made his opponent so successful no matter what style or physical prowess they fight with. His speed is legendary! Over looked was his elite timing and athleticism. Joe couldn’t be defeated by any body right up to today.

THIS IS THE FIGHT THAT PUT CALZAGHE IN AS A SUREFIRE FIRST BALLOT HALL OF FAMER AND AN ALL TIME GREAT. KESSLER WAS POWERFUL , FAST AND TECHNICALLY EXCELLENT . HIS ONE PUNCH KO OF ALLAN GREEN IS ONE OF THE BEST KOs YOULL EVER SEE . I HOPE KESSLER MAKES IT IN THE HOF , HE DESERVES IT . THIS FIGHT WAS BOXING AT ITS BEST . THERE WAS NO HOLDING , HEAD BUTTING OR RUNNING(HOPKINS/WARD) JUST CLEAN , HARD FIGHTING .

Kessler got a fair fight in the UK. 👊🏿😁 Wish I could say the same when he fought in the USA.

Great fight, great fighters. There are a few videos knocking around of the pair of them meeting up a couple of times years later. Fantastic respect for each other. So good to see.

It was a competitive fight. Kessler won rounds and it wasn’t a domination. Ward won every single round and battered Kessler and it wasn’t competitive. Now was it !

Kessler at his best was very accurate and varied his punches well early on but Calzaghe has such great stamina and forces fighters to fight at a much greater pace than they're used to. He just seems to mentally wear his opponents down. Great technical fight from both fighters.

This is a great technical brawl. As good of a scrap as you'll ever aee. Both men really went for it.

I've seen Calzaghe start slow once, but never slow down as the fight goes the distance!

It's funny how biased the HBO crew is, well everyone except Emmanuel Steward. When he fights Kessler, a non American, they are raving about how impressive Calzaghe is, and how is such a great. Then when he fights Roy Jones Jr, they just talk about how great Roy was in his prime and don't give Calzaghe any credit. Such bullshittery.

What a fucking belting fighter calzaghe was... ive been watching boxing since my old man made me and my brothers watch it in the early 80s/ late 70s for them 2... he should now be considered a legend... he retired undefeated... only the 2nd boxer in history after Rocky Marciano

Manny steward had a sensible and knowledgeable appreciation of great fighters, he knew Calzaghe was an all time great.

Calzaghe took some seriously heavy power punches from Kessler. Calzaghe has the most amazing stamina and chin that I've ever seen in a boxer. I've seen Ray Robinson fights and some of the punishment he took. I'm seeing similarities in both fighters.

Manny ...”Calzaghe top 2 or 3 pound for pound in the world”. I won’t argue with that.

Kessler had some soar ribs prior to this fight (I saw the documentary in Danish), But he ALWAYS got there and fight the fights he was contracted to do. No excuses ever for Kessler. Lost here but was a great fight, nothing to be ashamed of ! I never liked Calzaghe, he fights dirty sometimes but here he fought great. Hats off to Joe for a great performance. Give credit where credit is due folks !

Kessler is really a Brit. He has an English mum and a Danish dad. People don't realise England had a large Danish population living amongst us in the past. The land they occupied was known as the Dane-law.

Probably the best fight I have seen. 2 undefeated WARRIORS!!

Kessler is so solid. Big puncher. Always balanced. Great counter puncher. Solid jab. Just a good solid all around fighter. But Calzaghe is just overwhelming. He's just a maniac. He throws and throws and throws. Sometimes he slaps his punches but he's the hardest slapper I've ever seen.

dont get me wrong i think a prime rjj beats calzaghe. but calz was an amazing fighter, i mean look at this fight he made kessler miss pretty much all of his punches yet the commentators didn't pick up on that, the first 2 rounds especially. this is a carbon copy of how a fight with froch would've been. i am pretty much 100 percent convinced of that.

Calzaghe fought a past it Jones but watch the fight again ? Jones tactics, which dont diminish by age, were slight and basic. Watch again !!!!

great fight. terrible quality video! emanuel steward, a different class, no better judge of a boxer.

tremendous display of will and determination from both fighters. calzaghe had amazing stamina, makes me tired just from watching him. but credit kessler, he fought his heart out and ate some tremendous blows, calzaghe took him to places he'd never been before and kessler never quit on himself. you can't ask more from a fighter who is losing. super middleweight was so stacked, the division is a shell of itself today

Kessler fought a great fight. Nothing to feel sorry about here for the Great Dane. Very brave. Never gave up. Dejected and beaten he kept swinging for the KO.

Joe boxing at his best imo. Guard up, taking hard shots and landing 2's and 3's. He was switched on for this one and you could tell after round 3 he upped his game. Beautiful boxing.
