Kenneth Branagh Breaks Down His Career Behind the Camera | 'Death on the Nile' Interview

Фильм және анимация

Though he has proven himself a versatile talent both in front of and behind the camera, actor and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh is arguably best known for his work in a number of Shakespeare adaptations, like 'Much Ado About Nothing,' 'Hamlet,' and 'As You Like It.' In fact, Branagh made his feature directorial debut with one, namely 1989's 'Henry V,' which earned him Academy Award nominations for both Best Director and Best Actor. It marked the beginning of an exceptional career that has found success in multiple genres, from the horror of 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein' and the international intrigue of 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' to the superhero trappings of Marvel's 'Thor' and the fairy tale fantasy of 'Cinderella.' Most recently, Branagh put his own life to celluloid in the semi-autobiographical period drama 'Belfast' -- currently nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay -- and followed up the hit 2017 Agatha Christie mystery 'Murder on the Orient Express' with a sequel, 'Death on the Nile.' Ahead of the release of the latter, Branagh sat down with Rotten Tomatoes to talk about his eclectic filmography as director, from the unfiltered, instinct-driven work he did on his auspicious debut to the tricky balancing act he pulled off in 'Thor' and, of course, the vastly different approaches he took to his two most recent films.

I'd so much rather see Kenneth's Prospero in The Tempest, his or Leontes in The Winter's Tale, than his silly Poirot. I like some of his non Shakespeare work, like Belfast however his big budget but, frightfully CGI heavy Christie mysteries, with their indifferent scripts leave me cold. These movies make big money, but I hope some of it goes back into stage productions, and hopefully, a new Branagh Shakespeare movie.

Why no mention of him directing Disney's beautiful live-action remake of CINDERELLA and that awful adaptation of ARTEMIS FOWL?

I was kind of hoping he'd comment on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein considering it's seen as such a flawed piece of work he's done.
