Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, Daniel Day Lewis, all came from the same period of young actors in London? What I wouldn't give to have been part of that group!

His movie version of Hamlet is the best ever, IMO. He took a 400 year old play & made it cinematic in the best senses of the word.

I was undone! I couldn't speak for hours afterwards. And that final piece of music takes me back there every time. Powerful, powerful stuff!

@@julianeh5584 I don't know if I'd go Quite that far, as I've seen thousands of the great classics going back to the silent era (the late film critic Roger Ebert said it required Greater intelligence to appreciate silent films). That said, I would say the entire grave digger scene of Act V, scene 1 that Sir Kenneth filmed- that is the greatest piece of film, Ever. This is not to denigrate Olivier or Zeffirelli, but I wonder if they were too influenced by the directing style of Orson Welles. Especially the Great Olivier, in his film you have these long tracking shots with no dialogue, eating up precious screen time at the expense of cutting even More of Shakespeare's play. Sir Kenneth, on the other hand, is quite dynamic with the camera, making an exciting movie that keeps the groundlings awake while still being a tremendous work of art-AND not cutting any of Shakespeare's dialogue to do it! Whatever my belief in the genius of other actors' Hamlet's: Jacobi( he comes first), Olivier, Burton, Scofield, Gielgud ( the last 3 I've only heard audio)--I really doubt any could have done what Sir Kenneth did, which married a brilliant acting performance to a brilliant job of directing of Shakespeare's greatest play, uncut-- not only was it never before done on film, I have serious doubts that anybody, living or dead, could have done it at all or as well ( with the exception of William Shakespeare himself, who I think could do anything)

I saw Kenneth Branagh on stage in both Another Country and Henry V and both these performances have remained in my memory all these years later. So obvious he was a talent that was going places. Have followed his career both in the theatre and on film ever since and his performance as Laurence Olivier is another notch on his belt. Stunning performance.
