That’s it! Just gotta get out there and enjoy yourself. 😎 thank you.
Amen. If the counts aren't showing sustainability, shut it down for the entire region like they did last year. My drift boat is so dry it may be shrinking, but if that's what it takes to protect the future of the fishery, then so be it.

I think there’s more awareness today than ever and I sure hope everyone’s efforts to preserve the run pays out. The more information people have about this issue the better chance we will have in finding the right solution for sustainability.

It won’t be long now! These big rains are definitely going to make them run through hard though! The best way to get on one is to have your hook in the water!!! 😉🎣
ADFW should have closed the Kenai King fishery many years ago. It's a complex issue with a lot of moving parts. With so few fish returning year after year it's going to take years to get the run back up to sustainable numbers. The reaction to the closure is exactly what happens, traffic gets directed to different species. Look at the latest rockfish limit update. Now guides are starting to target more cod. It's better to close it down and preserve the fishery than to lose it altogether.

Yea I hear ya on this better late than never approach. I love hearing the stories from fisherman decades ago with gigantic kings… hopefully we will get to see them again one day.

They allowed the commercial fishermen to rape in pillage the Kenai for decades and destroyed the King population in the process. And they weren't even targeting King's but caught them in droves none the less as bycatch. Gone are the days of the great Kenai Kings (70+lbers) never to return...the genetics are lost. This is a perfect example of big $$ special interests running roughshod over sound management. Commercial fishermen have all the power and biggest voice in management meetings. Drastic measures need to be put in place...commercial guys all need to be pushed over to Bristol Bay with Kenai area/Cook inlet closed to commercial fishing.
i'll be there July 22nd. Hope to see ya

Just stumbled upon your channel and really enjoy it. I'll be coming up for the first time ever here July 21 for a week. Was hoping you could do a video on how to cast. I see it done in short spurts in some of your videos but if you have one or could do one specifically on the step by step that would be awesome dude! Practicing my barrel knot and egg loop knot as we speak.

Dang nice offer! 😎 we’re seeing more caught on the Kasilof right now than anywhere else.
Upon rigging and setting up your rod and reel for the Kenai Reds what line and how much do you have coming off of your fly line to your swivel? I know there are many different ways to do it but I’m trying to figure out if there should be a set length of line coming off your fly line to make your rigging effective to catch the fish. Thanks.
@alaskasmallcraftadventures
Жыл бұрын
Typically we’re not running any fly line at all. All of that floating stuff gets in the way and makes the reel unnecessarily heavier. If you wanted to keep your fly line and still fish sockeye, run a couple hundred feet of 20lb monofilament over the top of it and you’ll be set! Tie your leader to the mono and start working on filling the cooler!

@@alaskasmallcraftadventuresWhat are locals running for there main line on a baitcasting reel?
@alaskasmallcraftadventures
Жыл бұрын
There’s no need to run anything heavier that 17-20lb monofilament on your bait caster. I’ve seen 30lb being used to winch in salmon once they’re hooked but it’s hardly necessary and is cumbersome to work with.
Visiting Alaska for the first time ever and I'll be in Soldotna as my girlfriends family lives there. Does a salmon rod with bait caster reel work with the technique your doing?
@alaskasmallcraftadventures
Жыл бұрын
It’ll work just fine for ya I’m sure. Really a lot of the guides and many locals prefer bait casters over fly reels. I’d say a main reason I choose the fly reel is because it’s lighter, more nimble and is less likely to hang up the line when repeatedly whipping the hook around. The bait caster is like a winch and will haul the load in unconditionally which adds to its popularity.

Uh oh!! This is kinda typical in this small town! Especially during peak fishing. Ken’s usually restocks and trustworthy too. I usually stock up early on those bad boys…
Love your opening monologue. Yes the fisheries in Alaska are dwindling to nothing. Just like your king crab, they should shut down the state for a decade. Let the natural stocks get at least two generations of kings to repopulate. If not, get the southern run stock from New Zealand and raise them in the Kenai so they return thre.
@alaskasmallcraftadventures

Interesting idea on bringing up the southern fish.. I wonder if they’d swim backwards here🙃 I think creating awareness will be key to saving the salmon runs. We’ll keep working at it!
Complains about fisheries being overloaded to compensate for others being closed, then proceeds to spot burn places other than the main combat fishing tourist holes to all of KZread. How long have you lived on the Kenai?

I’ve been here on the Peninsula my whole life. Graduated from SoHi and never left. The Soldotna public parks are no secret unless you’re living under a rock. Is that where you live?

Grew up here too off Scout Lake. Graduated SoHi as well, we might've gone to school together. I'm tired of seeing the lesser known spots burned and full of tourists. Let them stand shoulder to shoulder at Centennial or Swiftwater or Soldotna Creek. Can't get out to catch your winter's worth of fish without dealing with all the Outsiders.
