They have there part “a Huge Part” of the problem. I don’t know why it’s mandatory for them to waste the fish by throwing them overboard when caught. It’s a huge fine if they are in possession of them.

Yes they are. Add in warming waters and its a double-whammy. Can't do much about the warming, but we can sure as hell do something about the crooked fisheries management owned by the trawlers.

You would do much better to go to the Gulkana and the Klutina R if you have a jet boat. Below the Klutina R in the Copper R not more than 25 feet from shore all the way down to the bluffs the Chinook pile up here so back troll bait and large spin Glos. late June to mid-July is good time to be on the Klutina. & Copper R. Right at Copper center at the Hwy bridge is the public boat ramp. - good to catch Sockeye here also. You can catch Copper R sockeye here also in the water of the Klutina R going in the Copper R. I guided fishing here some 20 years with jet boat but now I am stuck out of Alaska caring for an elderly mother with dementia. Most likely I won't return to Alaska after my mother is gone due to the country is a mess with communism taking over the country so it will be back to Romania to live and back to guiding Atlantic salmon fishing in Europe.

@@alaskasmallcraftadventures It is less the Feds like the Rep and two Senators than the local politicians sitting on the fisheries board, who are manned by people owned by the trawling corps. They let the companies regulate themselves and Juneau is good with it. Moreover, the State Republican Party has long been corrupt as all hell since Statehood. They've had control over the State Government more or less for the past couple decades and things have only gotten worse everywhere with Kings and with regard to the Kenai and Yukon. They let the companies comb the seas clean and then make the sportsmen and guides pay the price. They are beyond pro-business to the point of being in the pocket of the trawlers. Want change, try sending new politicians in Juneau who will break up the Trawler owned fisheries board, even if it means voting Democrat. They used to stock a lot more than they have been recently. There’s a lot of pushback on hatchery programs with the idea that they are competing with the wild stock 🤷‍♂️ right now they are slowly weening off the commercial fisherman and tightening up the salmon harvesting overall for everyone. It’s crazy how the sockeye and pinks are thriving on their own and the kings are nowhere to found.

@@roblockhart8410 Reds and Pinks all seem to be thriving everywhere. Silvers and Chum holding steady. One may suspect it is something to do with time at sea. Pinks and Reds spend the least amount, the Kings the most. My guess is warming waters are making the bait fish decline, and the trawlers are also hitting the remainder. Reds and Pinks don't rely on bait fish.

Well when hatcheries are producing billions of Pink and Chum fry of course they are thriving. In southern BC pinks and chums have been in a serious decline while certain Chinook runs are thriving. In Rivers Inlet the hatchery has been having good results with only taking 30+ pound fish for brood stock and getting hatchery fish over 40 pounds coming back. Maybe something similar needs to happen on the Kenai before they are completely wiped out.

  • @crownprincesebastianjohano7069
    @crownprincesebastianjohano70694 ай бұрын

Thank you again for the video! The way things work out for the different species of salmon is rather fascinating. Sockeye and Silvers are doing well. Pinks even more so, and not just in Alaska, in WA Pinkies have been gang-busters. Based on the data it leads to two proximate surface causes for declines of one and not for others: 1) Salmon deaths in the ocean are regional, 2) Mortality effects salmon who stay at sea longer, hence why Pinks and Reds are doing so well. Why might one think ocean mortality is regional? The Yukon River Chum. If mortality was purely driven by something in the ocean associated with time at sea, that would explain the Yukon Kings, but not the Chum. And until the 2010s, Chum were doing so well in the Yukon, with million+ runs, that they were being marketed as Keta in the Lower 48, extolling their superior Omega 3 levels compared to all other Chum. Then all of a sudden, boom, their decline has come drastically too but only a decade after the Yukon King decline started in earnest. This leads one to believe that something in the Bering Sea in particular was killing the fish. Kings are in decline everywhere. But Reds and Pinks are not, as Silvers and Chum seem to be holding steady. Why are Pinks and Reds thriving? Something about changes in the water. One notes that Kings are supreme bait fish predators. Reds and Pinks are not. Warmer water is leading to a decline in plankton, a decline in herring. A decline in Kings in areas most effected by warming water and trawlers. Reds and Pinks are not. Regionally, Chums are suffering as much as Kings in areas with warming water and high trawling activity. Pinks and Reds are not. Different feeding habits, different waters. So, trawling and warming water. Kings already declining due to warming waters, the trawlers are finishing off what's left.

By that time the Kenai River will be starting to get its Coho run. They won’t be in there super thick yet but you have a very good chance of catching a few. The kasilof river is the same. The Kenai River Silver salmon derby is in mid September for context. I think late august is the peak though in my opinion. The rain makes the water level get out of hand so your timing should be good. The Seward silver derby is august 10-18 however and you should be able to get limits of coho while you’re here.

My first job ever was working for one of the now shuttered canneries. We would drive down the beach and bring ice to the set net sites. Each day those beach sites would catch a tote full of 40+ pound kings salmon. The fish ran out before the regulations changed to protect the natural stock and here we are today all angling for a hatchery fish to put on the table.

Another thing to think about most people just never think about is invasive species (Pike). Fish and game did some studies on the effects of Pike killing off the little Salmon before they head out to the ocean. It was crazy how many salmon were in the stomach of One Pike. They were targeting the the little Salmon it seemed like. I believe the study was done in the May Su Valley. Which had great runs then they just disappeared. They completely shut down the Parks Hwy System to King fishing. Another thing to note is what you mentioned in the beginning of this video. Fish and game is doing all this stuff and what’s it doing. Well my next point I want to say is on the Lower Yukon Fish and Game had test nets in the water (70’s80’s90’s00’s10’s) and would be like the salmon are here, or it’s going to be good fishing and so on. Well for most of the years the fishing was great because they put the test nets in the spots the salmon were at. They change with the river most of the time. Well I know like in the 10-‘s that new management happen and for some reason decided to put the test nets in places where there was no fish, so they closed openings because they were not catching fish. The Locals were like fishing is good, the salmon are here why don’t you move your nets. It fell on def ears. These people who don’t have a clue about anything out there on the Lower Yukon are giving false information. What do you do?

@@roblockhart8410 Off the top of my head, two big reasons why Red and Pinks do better, while one run is bad and others fine: 1) Warming waters have a trickle down effect on bait fish, this effects salmon like Kings more than Reds or Pinks who don't rely on bait fish as much or at all. But not all areas are as effected by warmer waters. But Kings are down everywhere from OR to AK. Salmon who stay longer at sea have declined while salmon who spend less time, Reds and Pinks, are thriving. 2) Regional differences. Chum runs are steady most everywhere along the Pacific, except the Yukon which was home to 1 million+ runs as late as the early 2010s. The decline came after the Kings. What is the common denominator there? Trawling in the Bering Sea.

Another example of the Kenai River mismanagement was the hay days of the 80’s and 90’s. We did that ourselves. Holds true to the Lower Yukon as well. King Salmon needs to be SHUTDOWN like 10 years ago to get the numbers back up. The By Catch by the ships on the ocean needs to be addressed ASAP!!! Let’s look at the Copper River Kings, for some reason you can keep one Most years in a Dipnet, the upper Copper River still can try for a Catch n Release or keep one (Last few years) Why (Not as heavily Fished) harder to get to. What can Fish and Game do (STOP FISHING FOR KINGS) in Cook Inlet Rivers (Wild) the Feeder Kings in Salt I don’t have a problem with targeting lower the bag limit to One As Far as the Hatchery Kings Homer Spit, Nililchick keep them open for youth and special occasions.

Most come from the lower 48, stay for about 5-10 years and do not view it as a place to live raising a family for 20-30 years, and working at improving the State etc... That impacts the State's resources because people who come for a few years are not invested in the long term welfare of the State's resources. That at least is my opinion over the course of 40+ years of both living and visiting the State.

It’s really simple, commercial fishing in Cook Inlet needs to be closed. The incidental catch of King Salmon by the set netters is far greater than ADG&G will admit. The commercial drift fleet has killed the west side Silver Salmon returns. It all boils down to ADF&G allowing the Cook Inlet commercial fisherman to rape the resource. This has been going on for years. If managed correctly, sport fishing is a bigger influence on the Alaskan economy than Cook Inlet commercial fishing. Sport fisherman need a bigger voice.

I moved to Alaska in 1989 to advance my already working guide services and I watched the commercial fishing get stronger every year and get more favors for longer fishing and then came the commercial fishing demanding to shut down sports fishing to have the fish allocated to sports fishing given to commercial fishing then result was massive destruction of fish run throughout the Cook Inlet Rivers and stream systems. Rivers like the Little Su was wiped out of fish and from the Yenta R at lake creek the Chinook nearly vanished all together and Alexander Creek was wiped of salmon and in all of these places when some salmon was caught the fish wore the markings of a gill net scars and tore off fins. Every stream that flowed into the Yenta R was a massive reduction in all Salmon because the commercial fishing slaughter them in Cook Inlet.

The King guides have also created a serious reduction in the numbers. Have you ever seen the lower river when the main King season opens? Remember what I said last year. Eventually there will be "Conservation" tags for kings that get auctioned off for thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars. What I have noticed is anywhere the extreme numbers of reds come in (Nushagak for instance), the king population suffers greatly. The river can only support so many fish, and when the reds overwhelm the river, it may negatively affect the hatchling kings. All the smaller rivers/creeks are shut down to keep the extreme fishing pressure off them, I understand that idea. As a property owner on the Kenai, I have to say I'm very disappointed. The tourist season in Soldotna now is really about July 15th to the beginning of August, whereas it used to be May 15th to late August. Fish and game went to reduced bag then ultimately, 1 per year through a lottery. Those tags were the old metal tags just like the deer tags. Now canadians are so numerous that they are a nuisance. Unfortunately, because of the commercial fisheries, that will not help. Keep up the good work Vinny.

Not sure how to get government to listen since they have billions invested in the two dozen plus hatcheries across the state and comm fish mafia. Welcome to New World Order AK.

12 years of closure with no improvement?!! Yikes!!! 😳 we’ve got some major problems brewing here. Thanks for the info on different parts of the State, very insightful.

Give it another few years. They’ll make so many new rules and regs you won’t be able to fish.

It's sad. Alaskans are being punished while nobody monitors or regulates the slaughter of kings around the Northeast lower states and the commercial trawlers who all reap the benefits of ALASKA'S efforts to bring fish back to its waters.

I agree, it’s hard to regulate a resource that moves in and out of our state I can tell..

There is a lot of blame to spread around. The factory ships trawling the Bering sea into a desert. Reliance on hatcheries instead of tackling real issues at sea. Poor research. State and Federal commissions in the pockets of corporations. Warming waters and a shift in the eco-system that the State and Federal Republican Party, that has controlled Alaska for decades, refuse to acknowledge. Indeed, the people that share the least blame, sportsmen, guides and the Tribes, are the only ones paying the price year in and year out. The only regulations the fishery boards ever put out is to close fishing seasons, costing guides and Native entities and people their livelihoods. That always happens when the corporations own the government, in Alaska especially. On one hand a crooked as hell fisheries management set-up that allows the trawlers to "regulate themselves." On the other, regulators working on behalf of the State, or the Feds, who are former corporate officers who are openly siding with trawlers over the sportsmen, guides and especially the Tribal entities. And all of it usually blessed with a kiss by crooked politicians in Juneau. They haven't fixed anything, and in fact things have gradually grown worse. Yet people keep sending them back to Juneau because of issue affinity that doesn't even effect most Alaskans. If Alaska wants to change the crooked fisheries management set-up, for the State to do more to mitigate warming waters and melting permafrost, and have the State start helping the guides, Tribes and sportsmen, a good start is booting a bunch of the old-timers out of Juneau and give some other folks a chance. *You can't keep sending the same people back to Juneau and Washington and expect a change. You need to force change at every level or we can kiss our salmon good bye.*

Good question there! I’ve seen huge pods of orca almost everywhere the kings are and they hunt so well that nothing stands a chance against them.

The regulations are not going to change the numbers of fish, it’s looking like a political move, there only interest in control and money’s, we have trollers coming in from other Communities using draglines but there not going to bother with that it’s not important for it’s either to control you.
