Wow, great idea with the wire brush! I can't believe I have never used one before!! Might run into you on the river. Haven't been able to get out this week, but next week...it's on!! 😄

Oh yea, that wire brush is the ticket. The fillets couldnt be cleaner and truly makes all the difference when talking about top shelf table fare. Give it a try!

I know right?!! I was expecting a big tumor inside or something but the organs were just fine. When I made my belly cut the abdomen was filled with water, like light purple water. Im thinking it was bleeding out or something. The meat was outstanding though! The fish looked absolutely ridiculous though.

Id say were about 2 weeks away from this river packing full, which is typical. We're also getting rain now this week and that will also push the fish into the river. When you come down bring an extra cooler, you're going to need it!

Wish I was there I'm coming next year. You need to come to Virginia Beach or outer banks North Carolina. Tons of different fish to catch and theres always something to catch.

Peak Season for the Kenai Late Run Sockeye fishery typically begins around July 20 and runs for about three weeks. The sockeye are usually followed by a healthy run of Silver Salmon that will take us into the start of September. Historically speaking of course. 🎣

Yes buddy that is a lower Kenai 5 year red. The Russian River reds are only a 4 year fish big difference an extra year makes in the ocean feeding. That's why I fish the run in July in Soldotna to try and catch those 5 year big bucks. My friend just caught a 9 pound red this morning fish was bigger that most kings caught in the Kasiloff river.

Those bigs are a sight to behold! You’re right that a 9 pounder is getting up there. Even most of the Homer feeder kings even struggle to reach 10lbs it seems. Albeit they’re most likely not a five year old. Well it sure is nice to hear about someone else catching a big toad too! It’s still early and not too many fins out there yet. Congrats to your friend!

That's what the signs say! The motor boats screaming by will send a 2 ft tall wake crashing right over your waders too. The irony of trying to protect the banks is overwhelming. Some areas you can walk on, others are protected. They State will boat right up onto the protected bank, throw out their anchor and start writing tickets if you get caught. No sense in messing around with the protected stuff!

You should visit Ken’s Tackle just south of the kenai river bridge in Soldotna on the left. There’s a big salmon on top. He has the best selection of flies for sure. Grab some egg sucking leaches, chartreuse flesh flies, fake egg puffs… also cast all chrome vibrax spinners, pink orange or green pixie spoons. Ken’s also has packs of Coho flies packaged up!

Does that brush remove all the scales, or is it just to clean it up a bit?

That brush is the ticket to getting every single scale plus all of the slime off of the fish before you fillet them. It’s super effective and fast too. I scrub all of my fish. It cleans them so good that even the pickiest eaters will eat salmon.

Do you fish the Russian much for late run sockeye?

The run is already over really for the most part however if you like to immerse yourself in nature and aren't trying to harvest sockeye then a late July trip is warranted. You'll see the salmon turn bright red with green heads and morph into crooked hooked jaw monsters! The bears are already out up there. I seen 2 blacks and watched a Brown fish for salmon just last week. By this time now, the fish are already losing there luster and are getting darker. The meat is still fantastic but the catching can be limited. Also, depending on the weather, the river can become washed out and muddy and almost un-fishable! @@alaskasmallcraftadventures I did see that video! Great video’s!! Me and three of my friends from Michigan want to make a trip up there and fish Russian and Kenai river. We heard the second run sockeyes are bigger. And peak around last week of July. So just looking for some more intel from a local Alaskan. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Hi Ryan, I've watched several of your Sockeye fishing videos lately and would like to applaud you on your content, information/instruction, and overall video quality...all are pretty good. One critique I have and I hope you take it as constructive, is that you appear to snag and illegally keep a good percentage of your fish including the one in this video. If you are gonna be a successful KZread fisherman, your honesty and ethics need to be of the highest standards. You may be able to fool those who are inexperienced, but it will hold you back from gaining followers who can see what's going on. The reason you snag so many fish is due to the ripping action you do at the end of your drift. It is not necessary to do that, just let your drift finish without ripping it. You will catch more legal fish and not damage/harm as many. Will you still snag an occasional fish? Of course, but instead of snagging 70+% you will catch 90% of the fish you hook legally. And if you snag one just show it and release it, don't stage some phony hook in the mouth shot.

You are absolutely right when it comes to fishing these sockeye and the need to be legally hooking fish. And I applaud you for actually explaining why you think I snagged this fish. The "staged" hook in the mouth shot that you're referring to is me using my leader line as a fish stringer, as you can tell when the fish almost drifted away from me when it was in the water. I didn't bring a stringer that day by accident and wanted to keep the fish in the water while I was filming. I guess this looked "phony" to you and I can definitely see the confusion it created. When the fish came in it actually knocked my camera over and I completely missed the landing shot where you would have noticed it was legally hooked, but of course its hard to make everything perfect when filming by myself. I do take this as constructive, as you actually explained what it is that you want to watch and that will help me create a better show. I don't need to keep any fish from the river and will do better at releasing more of them for others to enjoy catching and hopefully earn more subscribers this way. Thank you for contributing.
