Ken Wilber 6-Minute "I Am" Enlightenment Instructions

In this extraordinarily brief, to the point, and high-impact 6-minute video, Ken gives pointing out instructions to be able to feel True Self (unitive consciousness) by remembering--in any moment--the "I am" that never changes. He explains how even the process of forgetting to be awake can be a trigger ("who is forgetting?") to reawaken instantly and reliably.

WO. I remember, 42 years ago, just getting sober and being drawn to Siddha Yoga. “Soham” or translated as best as you can from Sanskrit to English as “I am that” and realization coming across like wave for the first time in the midst of terrible upset. Instantly, the disturbance I had been experiencing was calmed by simply remembering that. And here 42 years later I am still that, still. ;)

I Am is our true nature of being, once you touched it, there will be no turning back, In my case everything shattered completely, every belief that i have, my religion, each of moment there is a unexplainable transformation happening, it kind of having a streams of wisdom and knowledge connecting through my being, and i really enjoyed it, as this rate there is nothing to achieve and nothing to have, for we already have everything and we have achieved the purpose of life.

The kicker is he is setting up even more barriers for his students. The grasping mind attaches to concepts. Ideas. Objects. Thoughts. All of this could be distilled into such a simple message. This is a display of someone who has drank too much of their own coolaid. Has adopted a rigid "spiritual concept" and decided they were a "teacher". Zen would say "a teaching outside forms or words." Let go of concepts, awaken to the nature of the true self. Everything is void but cannot be said to not exist.

Ken's 'I AM' seems to be beyond time 😮. Personally speaking I only became aware of this particular flavour of awareness when I was just hitting my teens. Is there an element if gaslighting here which pushes people to hold a belief that is not supported by ones personal history? The sense of being a conscious entity definitely emerges over time in a person. Ken elevates it far beyond what is supported by experience in my, largely irrelevant, opinion.

gaslighting (internal or external) = more thoughts as opposed to Presence. One could say that the "sense of being a conscious entity" cannot emerge over time since it Is. Children are generally much more in tune with a state of pure Being than a majority of adults; there is no logical thought framework requiring "un-learning" to embrace what Is Always Here. 🎱

When someone (in the West especially) is "hitting their teens" - they are generally beginning to embrace/experience their personal Identity, which is a handy wrapper (perhaps), but is therefore split from Source or a full immersion in Being. Being Is. How could this not "apply" to children? Logical analysis is required? There is a difference between I and IAM and what is being talked about is the I, to turn it into I AM there is a process, the process of attaining Samadhi, because that's what the I AM is, a permanent state of superconciousness in a state of supervoncentration, which just means the concentrated state one is in Dhyana meditation has become permanent, as a example if you were practicing Raja Yoga, you would hold one thought of the I in concentration without letting it slip or any other thought penetrate into that holding, just the I thought held for a sufficient amount of time, around 45 min, when one can do this consistantly, then one will leave the last session of Dhyana in a permanent state of I AM, which is Samadhi, and this is the difference between I and I AM.

This continuity is like a "signature" that is affixed to all the "things" in my reality that I have assumed to be me. The Buddha appears to point out that nibbana (which might be equated to the fundamental self or I Am) is forgotten or not realized because of attachment to desire, that is: desire for sense pleasures (kama tanha), for becoming (bhava tanha) and for annihilation (vibhava tanha). That is, as might be expected from Buddhism, mostly explained in negative terms: the cause of suffering is attachment to those three kinds of desire, but it is also explained that suffering or dhukkha is basically "not-nibbana". Hope this helps.

Michael Graziano's Attention Schema Theory shows how the brain creates the "I amness" experience and explains why it feels disembodied. Interesting that Wilber, like other Advaitans acknowledges that it can be lost in distraction, then regenerated. So, like everything else, it comes and goes just like other phenomena. All we can say is that something seems to be happening. Calling it a separate individual self seems a bit odd. There would have to be something unique to it, that separates it from others - bearing in mind, u can't say memories or experiences since these have been defined by Wilbur as Not Self.

I don't have a sense of "I am-ness" from 60 years ago. It seems to only start from when I was about 3. I don't know how to resolve that w/ the above idea.

‘Our feelings are objects’ ??? No they aren’t. They are feelings. In fact ‘I am’ is the feeling. And it shifts and changes. ‘You’ simply observe it. The sense of self is simply the brains Public Relations Officer lol. It makes you feel special. Tells you so. And it speaks for you to the public. Until one realises this one will only ever exist in ego. The above presentation. IMHO is the opposite of actual waking up and finding self actualisation. And being truly authentic

Presumably, the universe was more complex at one time, just a bunch of goo and fire, and then planets happened, and then water happened, and then life happened, and then plants happened, and then animals happened, then we happened… is the power of the “I am“ not a product of this complexity? Is it possible that the process of “I am-ing” is the very slow methodical process by which the universe continues to expand itself into complexity, and thus expand the depth and power of this I am? Is it possible that we (the I am) are working ourselves toward some kind of… I don’t know… unification or something wuwu?

From my imperience, the (re)cognition of “who doesn’t understand” is merely self reflexive cognition, and doesn’t shift the centre from ego to I-amness or original consciousness. Whereas, abiding as awareness without making an object out of who is trying to understand but doesn’t, reintegrates the ego into “I-amness”.

Conciously feeling with your senses. Touch something, listen to a sound, taste something, observe something. You achieve not thinking by being in the moment and not thinking about it. Meditation is exactly that. Treat your thoughts as objects that travel through you like dark matter. Observe them if you have to but you can let them go

'Mano, buddh, ahamkara, cittani naham' - Adi Shankracharya. Drop also this sense of 'I am'. At least - be willing to drop it. Mano is the grasping mind that wants to do things and build things. Buddhi is the discerning intellect. Ahamkara is the sense of "I am'. Cittani is the rest of the little thoughts. Naham means 'not me' - 'That's not what I am'. I have heard numerous people have had spontaneous kundalini experiences listening to the calm and wonderful scholar. Try all the methods. When the central channel opens and the crown lotus gradually clears... the sense of ahamkara dissolves in the stages of upper kundalini process. A master of opening the central channel - sushumna, the easy way - is hard to find.

In a sense, “I amness” points towards something higher than the physical self / ego. As one touches “I amness” they simultaneously lose the need for external value because value is found within and only within. It’s something that goes beyond the ego self. Another way to describe “I Amness” is just presence. We aren’t indulging ourselves when we practice I amness but rather our presence in this moment, separate from our egos. Presence / being is the source that we touch, not anything contained in the ego.

🧘‍♂ Achieving a state of unmanifest consciousness through meditative practices, where all objects are suspended, allows one to experience the pure essence of "I amness." ⏳ "I am this, no objects at all, that fundamental ongoing I am-ness. What was present five Millennia ago, yeah, before Abraham was I am that I am. This is the only thing that exists." ⏳ "I am" is an ongoing, unchanging, ever-present reality that existed even before the Big Bang. 💭 Resting in the awareness of "I am" allows one to be present in the moment and experience the infallible nature of existence. ⏳ "Fundamentally, I amness doesn't enter the stream of time and objects, it's The Unborn and therefore it never dies." 🌌 "Before the universe was, I am" - the fundamental absolute secret of the great traditions.

Very powerful and useful. But one potential point of confusion and unnecessary belief is that the "I amness" existed even before you were born. While it may have existed as a matter of other people's consciousnesses, the truth of the pure "I amness" that is available to experience by you, is only due to the YOUR field of consciousness. It is a quite a big leap to make the claim that YOUR "I amness" existed BEFORE you were born. Again, as a metaphysical point, it is interesting to consider. But it is NOT required of you to believe that there is an omnipresent, God-consciousness, that your individual consciousness is simply a modification of. One can continually become awakened from the illusion of the ego, as these instructions are very useful for, without blindly believing this claim about your consciousness simply being a part of the "One Mind". Be at least a little skeptical people. The claim that the ego is an illusion is empirically testable. The claim about different consciousnesses only being modifications of a single One is not empirical, it's metaphysical. Leave the metaphysics aside, this world doesn't need more blind belief. It simply reduces the credibility of those who are trying to make the wider population aware of the transformative potential of experiencing the EMPIRICAL claims about the truth of suffering, the ego, and impermanence.

You're misunderstanding what it means to experience pure "I amness" as existing before one was born. It's not a metaphysical claim or belief at all, but an experiential insight. In the experience of pure "I amness" there is no Time -- no past, present, or future at all. When experience of the conventional self subsequently re-arises within that pure "I amness" . . . the existence of Time arises with it, including the self's temporal history and birth. And since that happens AFTER the previous experience of pure "I amness" . . . "I amness" is said to have existed BEFORE the birth of the self. QED.

Any concept of "one" may be helpful in development - for example to accelerate compassion for others - but I tend to agree that this is only a metaphysical concept and each concept should fall away as a person develops further and no longer need that particular concept. (Grasping any belief may be necessary or unavoidable during development but is essentially "unskillful.")

If you really are interested in this 'I am - ness' as Ken calls it. Please make an effort to learn more on the topic of Advaita Vedanta. Meditation is good, we should do that but there is also a great deal of learning on an intellectual level here because if you cannot understand the structures it will be very hard to understand what you could be or are perceiving. Same for mind, heart etc. It needs to come together corectly.

This is similar to Sakyamuni buddha's word. Non-phenomena of self, Non-phenomena of others, Non-phenomena of sentient beings, Non-phenomena of lifespan. The moment we understand emptiness, also based on his explanation as "object", those objects are empty in nature, the moment we understand this, we eliminate the CONCEPT OF SPACE. The moment, we learn to see our body & lifespan & see life before our current life, we eliminate the CONCEPT OF TIME. Just like what he mentions. Thanks
