To say the "I am" existed 5 years ago, etc. is fine but to say it was before the body was born cannot be verified so it can be doubted and questioned. For the sake of clarity, and to remove all doubts, it is better to stick with what cannot be denied. That requires the stamp of truth which is direct experience. We can say the potential to manifest as the sense of 'I am' was and is present, but not consciousness. In deep sleep, during a state of unconsciousness, or under anaesthesia, the experience of being conscious subsides. So consciousness, verbalized as “I am” is a transitory state that depends on the body-mind. However, before you awoke and became conscious of anything, including the fact of being conscious, you existed in the sense that the potential for conscious presence was there. Consciousness happened to you who were there to experience it. Your fundamental position is prior to consciousness.

I am not sure myself. But from my understanding, you can achieve a state of very profound inner peace and halt the mental suffering in your life. If we seek happiness, we will be disappointed by unhappiness. If we are at peace, there is nothing to disappoint us. The suffering comes from your ego/personality, which I still see that has its instrumental utility in social structures, but is not the true you.

If you really are interested in this 'I am - ness' as Ken calls it. Please make an effort to learn more on the topic of Advaita Vedanta. Meditation is good, we should do that but there is also a great deal of learning on an intellectual level here because if you cannot understand the structures it will be very hard to understand what you could be or are perceiving. Same for mind, heart etc. It needs to come together corectly.
