Kelty Noah's Tarp - Excellent, but not why you think

This is a review and general discussion of the Kelty Noah's Tarp. I go over the specifications and details as well as measurements and accessories. I pitch this tarp as a flying diamond and as a picnic table awning to show what this tarp is capable of. I also discuss its limitations and do a water resistance test.

I've had mine for about 5 years now. I use it about 20 nights per year. I had one night of thunderstorms where I got damp but that was largely due to rain blowing sideways under my hammock. I've had a little wear over the years, but I take care of it like any other piece of gear, treat seams one per year and it has performed wonderfully.

I own the 12' tarp. Have been out a few times with this tarp and have really enjoyed. One trip was early fall on an elk scouting trip. Surprise rained all night, 10-15mph wind and I stayed perfectly dry. Think you bring up some good points. The tarp is better than a sharp stick in the eye...

+bliabraaten Indeed it is way better than a sharp stick in the eye ;) I like this tarp. It's perfect for what they sell it for and an exact perfect match for their marketing claims. It's well made and well designed for the intended purpose. I'm glad yours has been good to you. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video!

I personally have 2 of the 12 foot Kelty Noah tarps and my wife and I use them all the time as a tarp over our hammocks here in the mountains of North Carolina. We have been in storms with plenty of rain and wind on multiple occasions and never had a problem staying dry. I highly recommend this product and plan to buy 2 more for my kids to use over their hammocks.

Stay tuned. Sometime in the next two or three weeks, I should have a video up of a square tarp that actually can indeed withstand monsoon/hurricane force wind driven rain... and is in fact constructed in such a way that, given some thought and effort, it could be pitched to take the pressure of those sorts of winds without being torn to pieces. I might just change your mind about what to give your kids for hammock cover... of course, as with anything, there might be pros and cons... but I promise that if you tune in for the next couple of tarp videos I have coming up, at least one of those might give you reason to consider a change.

Well, this was another great review, albeit long, but the length is understandable, because of the amount of detail that you provide in your videos. I have started watching most of the videos that I subscribe to at 1.25 to 2.0 times the normal speed, just so I can maximize the limited time that I have, while still garnering all of the information provided in the videos. In the case of this 38 minute video, I watched at 1.5 times the normal speed, and it sounded fine, so I received all of the great information that you provided, just at a 50% faster pace. So, that being said, thanks for another detailed video review of the Kelty tarp, and I believe that this tarp will definitely not make the cut on my short list. It looks like the DD Tarp is still the standout, for a very lightweight, completely waterproof, and all around great general purpose tarp at a very reasonable price.

+Msilverhammer I do need to find some ways to start compressing the information to less words, less repeating myself, and being a little more direct. In fact, I've been thinking seriously about trying to write scripts for myself rather than just rambling "off the cuff". I want to continue to be throrough, but I think the average viewer does have some time constraints... It might save me some time, too. I was out at the farm shooting this video for about 5 1/2 hours (some of that was due to technical difficulties with one camera and the audio recorder, but a lot was doing non-obvious things like dragging that 275 lb picnic table around the place by myself) and then editing footage from 3 cameras plus a separate audio source took a few hours (I expect editing time to decrease as I get better with the new software)... I think if I work from a script, maybe things will be more linear and save a lot of time for the viewer and for me.... ... Thanks for taking the time to watch! And yes, for sure: The DD 3X3 is the best value for 'bushcrafting/survival/outdoorsman' activities that I've found so far. The Kelty Noahs tarp just isn't the same sort of device. I like it a lot and I'm glad I have it, but it just doesn't serve the same purposes.

You mention that the newer (green) tarps are twice as water resistant as the older one. I use this to provide a modest covering for a car campsite and although it hasn't rained yet, it seems ideal enough to stave off rain sufficiently to get your water-nonresistant stuff under cover :-) There is also another use you may not have considered - when at a campground where sites are packed in close together, it makes for an excellent and discreet privacy shield, without seeming to be one. The curved cut of the tarp makes it easy to pitch in almost any configuration as a sun/wind/visual barrier -- and to others, it just looks like a cool piece of gear, rather than you trying to block them out. (Fantastic for when the neighboring site's kids think your campsite is their cut-through or playground!)

You and I might have different definitions of "tarp tent". When I pitch a tarp tent, it is a ground pitch that could not accommodate a hammock. My most recent video where I pitch a tarp tent is from May 3 and is titled "DD Hammocks SuperLight Tarp - Good Alternative to Silnylon"

A very thorough review. I was surprised, however, to hear about the fails. I just camped in probably the worst rain I've ever camped in. It rained all day and all night. We set the Noah's tarp up in a rush while it was pouring. In our rush, we didn't account for decent gradients and the water pooled in two places. Underneath, all night - not one drop. I watched the water pour in two places like a faucet. The sound was loud all night - I was fairly worried. But - I was BONE DRY. In two places, it pooled all night I'm guessing 3 inches deep 8 inches wide. Not a drop there either. This was the first time it ever rained since I've been using this tarp. I packed it up the next morning (still raining) and was thinking that I picked up a decent piece of kit.

  • @betweenfiveandseven

    @betweenfiveandseven

It is a decent piece of kit... In fact it's really nice... just not entirely appropriate for rain accompanied by strong winds. But they don't claim that it is and they are completely honest with their hydrostatic head rating, so really, I probably shouldn't have used the word "fail". I'm surprised you had such good luck with puddles. The DWR on the material really isn't meant for standing water. It's meant to cause water to bead up and hopefully run off before it has opportunity to soak through. And, if you'll take a suggestion from me: Stock a bottle of Gear Aid ReviveX for the day the DWR starts to wear off or break down from UV exposure. You'll be glad you did. Thanks for taking the time to watch! I appreciate it.

Great review and appreciate the examples of how you used the tarp. Awesome cat too, sorry to read that he's now gone but such is life and it's good you enjoyed him as long as you did. I've got the large version of this tarp and it's been great in the rain so far when we're surprised (Texas coast, don't like the weather just wait a minute), but I don't intend to use it for that purpose it's primary purpose is shade and durability. Thanks for taking the time for the video, gave it a thumbs up and subscribed to your channel as I'm looking forward to seeing lots more good reviews like this one.

I had the tarp in an "A" frame configuration. Added a ground cloth because ground was wet. In Am our tarps were covered with Ice. A little problem getting it cleaned off to pack up, put I would use that tarp again in place of a tent any day. I did have to cut the ridge support rope to get it off the trees, but that wasn't a fault of the tarp.. Best $60.00 I've ever spent.

Thanks for the good and honest review. Too bad I didn't see it before I bought mine. I'm trying it out tonight. I like it so far, but very disappointed that it does not have tie outs for tent mode for my hammock. I thought it did with the reviews I read on it. But, you do have to put it up on a diagonal with a hammock. I still have my aqua quest king camo defender tarp. It's heavier, but it has always kept me dry. I'll have to try out the kelty in the rain (in the back yard) before I take it out on the trail.

I have to recommend to anyone with the Kelty Noah tarp (no matter what size) that they stock a bottle of Gear Aid ReviveX for the day the DWR starts to give up. It will probably keep you dry in most circumstances, but sooner or later, the DWR on the Noahs tarp will start to break down from use, wear, or from UV exposure. Check the video description for a link to the ReviveX. ... Your Aqua Quest king Camo is as good as it gets in waterproof. I have the medium and the new 10X10 (I did a video on the 10X10 defender just a couple of months ago). They are really heavy, but there isn't a tougher, more waterproof tarp than the Aqua Quest Defender series. Aqua Quest also released some new tarps they call the "Safari" series. Those are quite a lot lighter, but come in the same sizes as the Defender tarps plus have all the same tie outs and that really excellent webbing center seam. ... Thanks for watching!

A Hammock camper so id know if it leaked. I honestly love these tarps give them a permanent ridge line and there a very quick/versatile setup in my opinion.

I'm glad you've had good experiences in wet weather with yours. There's a video from 2010 done by MrBableFish5 here on youtube titled: Kelty Noah 9 Tarp Review - Hammock Camping. He hit the issue pretty squarely on the head between the 3 minute mark and 3 and 1/2 minutes. It's exactly what I expect from a tarp with a 450mm hh rating (and the REI article linked in the description of this video is worth a read). It just can't quite stop big drops driven to fairly high speed by wind. How well and how tightly and what direction vs the wind a tarp is pitched can and does make a huge difference, so your skill set as an experienced hammock camper is probably offering your tarp some advantage it might not get from a user without your same level of skill.

I’ve had the Noah’s 12 for about 4 years now, used it for my hammock shelter and have been pretty happy with it. Been through a few (kinda) heavy rains and stayed dry. Mostly summer trips, but a few spring and fall outings as well. HOWEVER... Just got back from a 4 day trip, it rained constantly. A light rain, but constant. I was under some pretty big Douglas fir trees and as the rain and moisture started to gather in the branches 20-30 feet above me, the large, heavy drops started to fall. Mist city!!! Haven’t ever experienced that before with this tarp and just chalked it up to the age of the item...then I watched this video. Doing more and more backpacking these days and trying to go lighter. If the tarp won’t keep me dry under all conditions, the weight isn’t worth it. Thanks for the video. I learned quite a bit.

If you want to reduce weight and increase protection from heavy rain, have a look at the AquaQuest guide series and safari series tarps. The Guide series are very light weight and are made from sylnylon. The safari series tarps are a little heavier (but lighter than this Kelty Noahs tarp) and are made from a sil/poly coated nylon combo material. Both the safari and guide are rated to 20,000 mm hydrostatic head.

@@betweenfiveandseven thank you for the suggestions! I think, at this point, I am going to try and make my own tarp. I am teaching myself to sew and it looks like a tarp would be a great/fun DIY project! I figure that with using silnylon or silpoly from one of the awesome online vendors, (RSBTR, et al), I can custom make my own tarp for just a hair less $$ than a purchased one and also end up at about half the weight of the Kelty! I love the coverage the Noah's 12 provides, so I'm just going to mimic the pattern. Again, thank you.

The water resistant on the Kelty Noahs tarp is a DWR spray. I'm not really sure another layer of spray will change it very much. As it is, water will bead up and run off under most circumstances. Where this device is less capable than some others is when the rain is being driven by strong winds or when it develops any sort of sag that allows a puddle to form. I do think you should keep a bottle of Gear Aid Reviv X around for when the DWR Kelty applied starts to wear or break down from UV exposure, but I doubt an extra layer of spray will change the properties of the surface of the fabric enough to make much difference. ... I hope that helps!

I have the Noah 12 tarp. I bought it last year. I have enjoyed it and it has lived up to the positive reviews I read before purchasing it. It provides a huge amount of coverage over my Grand Trunk Skeeter Beater hammock with room to spare! While it is not opaque, it does shade well. Creates a sort of translucent effect around you when you sit under it in the sun. Because of its size, I believe one could double it on itself to increase its sun-blocking ability. I have used it in a light rain once; but am confident it will serve in heavier downpour conditions. It is big enough to create an enclosed room if the weather got especially nasty. I did change out the lines and I really don't use the stakes that came with it. For my next improvement I will add snakeskins to speed up the deployment process.I do not agree with the method this gentleman used to test its waterproofing. Many very effective rain covers would fail the standing water test he executed. Many of the materials in lightweight rain gear are designed to either immediately shed water or resist it long enough for it to roll off under its own weight. They are not designed for full impermeability. Thus they will fail when used in a bucket-liner fashion. That's why one is taught to tension a tarp out and angle it properly during the setup so as to avoid creating any surface on which water can stand.

I'm glad you like your Kelty Noah's Tarp. It's a fine device for what it is and what Kelty intends it for and quite well made. I appreciate your opinion on my non-scientific testing method regarding the hydrostatic head rating/water proofing. I encourage you to follow the link in the description to the article on waterproof fabrics on REI. All versions of the Noah's Tarp up until the green 2016 version with the steel rings sewn in to the corners are rated to a 450mm hydrostatic head. Most folks who write on this topic regarding waterproof materials for tents, tarps, clothing etc seem to agree that a fabric (coated or otherwise) should not be called "waterproof" unless it has at least a 1500mm hydrostatic head rating. The Noah's Tarp is not water proof and all versions made before the green 2016 version can barely be called "water resistant". The 2016 version can easily be called water resistant, but also not water proof (noteworthy is that Kelty does not call any version of the Noah's Tarp "water proof". They make no such claim.).... Again, I encourage you to read the linked article on REI for a pretty thorough explanation of the topic. Thank you for taking the time to watch! I appreciate the views.

I'm not going to try to defend this tarp in the way of withstanding a monsoon or manage 59 nights out, but I have had this out for week long setup intervals to serve the purpose of creating a shelter from the sun here in Florida along with the flash and violent rain storms. I bought it to supplement my tent to cover the campsite (12 footer for reference), and it has worked really well despite the low waterproofing rating. As far as the test, I think its a good test to test the performance of the high-end equipment's claim, but properly set up no tarp should be required to manage a gallon pool of water. I would bet even the highest quality most expensive silnylon, tyvex or whatever super lightweight backpacking material tarp would fail the test. I actually just came to this for the deployment methods to see if I could tweak my setup, I just don't feel enough of the video was focused in line with the title "Excellent, but not why you think" qualities of the tarp.

Fair enough. .. This is one in a series of more than a dozen tarps I've done videos on. It was the only one that I chose to do this way. And, that's because it's the only one I've seen reviewers make wild, false claims about. Since those claims are far outside what the manufacturer says (Kelty is very honest about the capability and intended uses for this), I decided to stress as much as possible that people tell a lot of lies about this product. That might not have been of any great service to the manufacturer or potential viewers hoping for something else, but the video description is worth reading before watching any of my way-too-long videos. Thanks for taking the time to watch and also for your input. I appreciate it.

a couple things... 1. the 12' version has tie outs in the middle and pitches in an a-frame over my hammock quite nicely. 2. when used for hammock camping, this tarp is pitched under trees. that driving rain is not as common during such use. 3. if you pitch it correctly, there shouldn't be any pooling and the tarp should deflect most moderate rainfall. i agree with everything else though. it's not the best thing for long-term, heavy usage. for the occasional hammock camping trip with even some moderate rain, however, it works just fine. i even had this pitched on a rainy day recently and nothing was getting through the tarp. it wasn't a torrential downpour, but it was a constant rain for a couple hours and the tarp did it's job.

+mutationdesign Thanks for watching! If you're looking for an "outdoorsman" tarp for shelter (camping, bushcrafting, hammock cover etc etc) just two companies consistently stay on the top of my list to recommend. Aquaquest and DD Hammocks. If you don't care how heavy it is, either the Aquaquest Defender Camo Tarp or the Aquaquest King Camo are absolutely bomb proof... but also very heavy. If you don't want to carry either almost 3 or up to 6 pounds of tarp (and maybe if you want to save a few bucks), then the best value out there is from DD Hammocks. They make the DD 3X3 and the DD 4X4 (meters, not feet) and they are excellent. They also have a rectangular tarp I forgot the name of. DD is in the UK, but the shipping is unbelievable: 2 days is what I've experienced every time I've ordered from them. ... That cat ;) His name is Fuzz. He is one big old barn cat and he's 100% predator. He pretty much survives on jack rabbits and and whatever other small game he can find. Fuzz has been on the farm for probably 10 years or so and he just keeps getting bigger. I could have edited off a couple of minutes in that part of the video, but I decided to let old Fuzz have the spotlight.

I think it boils down to common logic and common sense which seems to me over the years is becoming much less common. You have to always keep in mind that reviews are very often fake and made by the company that actually makes the products or are people paid to write the reviews and those that are not fake simply are personal opinions which every one has one and they very widely. They are just as different from one another as each person is different from one another in society. The most important thing that everyone needs to do is research. Do the research on what you are looking for and when you come to the one you think you want you then need to test that product by doing the best you can in recreating the adverse conditions you think that product might be subjected to and see how it performs prior to actually taking it out and relying on it. But in order for the test to really be valuable the test must be as true as possible. And that goes with any gear especially if you are going to potentially rely on it with your life.

The test for water resistance was completely unrealistic for any real scenario. These ratings tell how much water can sit on the fabric before 3 drops penetrate. Obviously if that water is left for a long period of time, more water will penetrate the fabric. These things are not designed to function as water bladders. They are designed to allow water to run off. A 400mm rating means the fabric can withstand approx 0.7 psi of water pressure. For reference, a typical umbrella will have around 400mm water resistance, yet you don't see people complaining that their hair gets wet because a driving rain is penetrating the fabric. Long story longer, used as it is designed, the 400mm rating should be more than adequate for keeping you as dry as possible. Good review otherwise.

I'm glad you found this information useful. I sure wasn't trying to bash it because it is well made and made from quality materials. It just isn't what a lot of folks typing written review on retail sites say it is. Thanks for watching!

Im looking to buy this tarp and stumbled on this video- really didnt find this review useful or based on sold understanding. Most "hardcore" backpackers are weight conscious and the materials used on the gear from jackets, tent flys, sleeping bags, and tarps are lightweight permeable fabrics treated for water resistance- not waterproof. A homedepot tarp is waterproof at triple the weight- and is probably better for your bucket test and intended use.

I've reviewed about a dozen of these sort of tarps. The version of the Kelty Noah in this video is inferior to most of them for the purpose of hammock cover or back country shelter. There are many lighter tarps that pack down smaller, offer more coverage, and are far more waterproof. This version of the Kelty Noah is absolutely not appropriate for a "hardcore backpacker" shelter. This is A-OK for sunshade at the park or maybe a day at the beach or a daytime festival. And, as I said in the video, Kelty makes absolutely no marketing claims to the contrary. They do not claim you should use it as a back country shelter. Their own marketing suggests festival and daytime use.... Ignore that truth at your own peril if you choose this for a "hardcore backpacker" shelter.

I am looking at this for car camping and have been reading good reviews in rain even here in your YT video. Thanks for your info, though, makes me want to be more educated and not just shell out money on this tarp without further reading.

There is a lot of competition for this sort of thing out there. On the expensive side (but often can be found on sale from a number of different places) is the Aqua Quest King Camo. That one is the gold standard for waterproof tarps. There are lots of videos regarding the King Camo on youtube. ... Also very worthwhile and what I think are the best value to be found are any of the tarps from DD Hammocks. I have done a couple of videos featuring the DD 3X3 (3 meters by 3 meters) in multicam. They make it in other colors and they make a couple of larger versions like a 10'X15' and a 13'X13'. ... If you don't mind applying seam sealer and maybe running an extra stitch in to each corner tie out yourself, another great value in a waterproof tarp are the Ettowah Outfitters/Bens Bushcraft/BCUSA tarps. I like the DD tarps better than those, but they are equally waterproof and really, if Ettowah sealed their seam and did just a little bit of reinforcement of the corner tie outs, they would be perfect. ... Wilderness Innovation Tarps are highly regarded, but I don't have any experience with them. Snugpak makes a catenary cut like the Kelty Noahs Tarp called the Snugpak All Weather Shelter that's rated to a 3,000mm water column. ... I hope those ideas give you a good starting point for research in to what might suit your needs. Thanks for taking the time to watch!

Nice video. Useful information. However, if you’re setting it up like you do in this video during a storm, yep, you’ll get wet. I’m sorry, but I've slept dry under my Noah's 9 during many Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama downpours. Not once have I been wet, even when the wind blows the rain sideways. Setup is key. I recommend an A-frame setup as Kelty illustrates, that’s low and snug to your hammock.

This version is rated for a 450mm hydrostatic head. It in no way resembles any "waterproof" device nor does Kelty claim that it does.

Very timely and informative. I was convinced that the Noah was the tarp for me, but I would have clearly wasted my money. Thanks for telling it like it is. It's unfortunate that no one makes a decent 12 x 12 waterproof tarp for less than $100.

+lapicker DD Hammocks makes the DD 4X4 (4 meters by 4 meters). I have the 3X3 and am very fond of it... The 4X4 in green is $82 shipped and in their multicam, it is $96 shipped... and their shipping is shockingly fast, by the way. The DD tarps are rated to a 3,000 mm column. I hope that helps! And, thanks for watching!

Nice review. Only 450 mm HH is pathetic. No wonder it mists out. For comparison, Terra Nova Adventure 2, 8x10, is 4,000 mm HH ($55). Aqua Quest King Camo, 13x10, is 20,000 mm HH ($125). I own those two and appreciate their repellency. Maybe Kelty expects you to treat with better waterproofing.

+Mojave Max Yes. Exactly. 450mm or even the 800mm rating of the 2016 version with the steel rings in the corners just isn't enough to call them "waterproof". I do like this tarp a lot but not for serious shelter. It's great for day use and events like watching youth baseball and soccer... but this is absolutely not something I would count on for a through-hike , a 10 day camping trip, or to keep with my emergency preparedness gear. . I have an Aqua Quest Defender Camo (the smaller version, but the same construction as the King Camo) and other than the weight, I have no reason at all not to say it is the best I have seen for serious shelter. The best value I found is the DD Hammocks 3mX3m tarp. It's has a 2,000mm rating. I've thought about buying the Adventure 2 while spending money on other stuff at selfrelianceoutfitters, but the photos I've seen make it look like it doesn't have much by way of tie outs. What do you think of it? Have the grommets held up and am I right thinking it only has about 4 tie outs plus corner tie outs? ... Thanks for watching!

+betweenfiveandseven The Adventure 2 has 8 loops around the perimeter and 1 in the middle. I wish there were more. Set-up, for me, is limited to an A-frame, either for my hammock or on the ground. I've had it for 2 full seasons and it has served me well, in spite of that limitation. I rarely use the grommets. If you are willing to put up with a one-trick setup, I think it would serve the frugal solo packer well. When I feel the need for a more secure tie-down, I just use small rocks, choked by some paracord, staked, for peace of mind.

Between you and one other viewer who turned me on to an inexpensive tarp I didn't previously know about, I was inspired to do a video on tarp buttons and a ready-made tie out for them. That video didn't grab a lot of immediate attention, but it looks like it will "have legs" and probably pull a few hundred views a month for a long time. Thanks for this discussion! It helped my channel and I appreciate that a lot!

His name was Fuzz. Out of all the barn cats we had over 40 years or so, Fuzz was the best. He was an excellent mouser and a good companion for more than a decade. I'm sad to say I buried him early in July, but I'm happy that he found his way in to a couple of my videos so he will always be easy to remember. He was a blessing.
